EXCLUSIVE The sad reason customers have fled El Salvadoran restaurant that went viral for helping LA riot cops

Restaurant owner Elizabeth Mendoza didn't expect a brief video footage of her heroic employees helping deputies would go viral. On Monday, Elizabeth stood in front of her business, a Salvadoran restaurant called La Ceiba, just two days after the terrifying incident when a handful of LA County Sheriff's deputies overcome by tear gas burst into her small restaurant. Without missing a beat, Mendoza's cousin, Rosa, jumped in and splashed milk and water into the grateful deputies' eyes. 'They came in with a lot of coughing,' Elizabeth told 'That's when I knew they needed help.' Over the weekend, La Ceiba became the center of activity after protestors clashed with deputies in Compton, California. The protestors mobilized in the area on Saturday after Homeland Security agents detained several day laborers at the Home Depot less than a mile from the restaurant. During the skirmish with protestors, several deputies who were overcome by the chemicals sought refuge and piled into La Ceiba. Footage of the restaurant workers providing aid to the dazed deputies quickly went viral over the weekend. Rosa, who also works as a chef at the restaurant, said she was surprised at all the attention their little family establishment has received since the incident. She was one of the employees who was seen helping deputies to clear their eyes. 'I helped them because we are all humans,' Rosa told 'They needed our help and we are here to serve.' On Monday, however, Elizabeth sighed heavily as she looked at her empty restaurant. The beginning of the work week is usually busy at La Ceiba, a Salvadoran restaurant in Compton, just 20 minutes south of Downtown LA. 'All the people are scared,' Elizabeth said. 'Because of the ICE raids, they are staying away from the area. I don't think it's because we helped some of the officers. I think it's because of ICE and the situation in general.' Adriana Lemus, a La Ceiba employee, said business has been slow ever since the clash on Saturday. The restaurant also has a karaoke bar next door, which is usually filled with customers over the weekend. Barely a handful of patrons showed up on Sunday. On Monday, things were not better. 'On a daily basis it's usually busy in the morning,' Lemus said. 'People stop by for breakfast and come for lunch here. Since Saturday, it's been pretty slow, and we believe people are afraid to come here to expose themselves [to ICE].' Lemus said employees have been instructed to protect their patrons should ICE agents return to the area. 'We will close our doors to them and ask for a warrant because they are required to show that,' Lemus said. 'We protect our customers here and we want them to know they will be safe.' While there was more DoorDash orders coming in on Monday, seeing the empty seats in the normally busy restaurant is disheartening, owner Elizabeth Mendoza said. 'We hope it will pick up again once they [ICE] leave the area, but who knows,' she said. By Monday night, Elizabeth said she received dozens of calls at the restaurant asking how they could support her business. Strangers who saw the viral video said they were moved by Elizabeth and her employees' heroism in helping the deputies. One man from New York even sent Elizabeth $300. 'He said, "I want to support your restaurant and I want you to deliver that food to a nearby police station." And before that call, someone from the Compton Police called to say they want to recognize my business. She continued in tears: 'It's too much because we didn't really think about it when it was happening. We just wanted to help our fellow humans. It's what we all should do.'

Missiles thrown at police in second night of Ballymena disorder

Fireworks and other objects have been thrown at police during a second night of disorder in Ballymena. Riot police were deployed around the Clonavon Terrace area on Tuesday night as hundreds of people have gathered in the Co Antrim town. Advertisement PSNI vehicles formed barricades on some roads while riot police wearing armour and carrying shields stood nearby. Some protesters shouted abuse and threw objects at the police including glass bottles and pieces of metal. Police fired less-than-lethal rounds at some of those gathered and also used a water cannon to disperse the crowd. It comes after violent disorder on Monday followed an earlier peaceful protest in support of the family of a girl who was the victim of an alleged sexual assault in the area. Advertisement The scenes of violence in Ballymena which left 15 police injured on Monday were described as 'racist thuggery' by a senior officer. Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson said the force had a significant operation in place over the coming days in case there was any repeat of the disturbances on Monday night in the Co Antrim town. He said: 'We are actively working to identify those responsible for last night's racially motivated disorder in Ballymena and bring them to justice. 'Anyone who has information or who can help identify those responsible is asked to contact police on 101.' Advertisement A 29-year-old man has been charged with riotous behaviour after being arrested during disorder in Ballymena on Monday night. The man, who is due to appear before Ballymena Magistrates' Court on Thursday, July 3rd, has also been charged with disorderly behaviour, attempted criminal damage and resisting police. Mr Henderson said other arrests are expected following the examination of video footage. The Prime Minister's official spokesman described the events which saw police and ethnic minorities targeted as 'very concerning'. Advertisement In Clonavon Terrace, several houses had their windows smashed and two which suffered significant smoke damage remained sealed off on Tuesday. The violence flared following an earlier peaceful protest in support of the family of a girl who was the victim of an alleged sexual assault in the town at the weekend. Two 14-year-old boys appeared in court on Monday charged with attempted rape. The charges were read to the teenagers by a Romanian interpreter. On Tuesday, the PSNI said it had made a third arrest in connection with the incident and reiterated a public appeal for information. Advertisement Detective Inspector Olphert from the PSNI's public protection branch said: 'A 28-year-old man was arrested yesterday evening, Monday June 9. 'He has been unconditionally released from police custody following questioning.' After the later protest turned violent, police were attacked with petrol bombs and masonry. Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson said the attacks should be 'loudly condemned by all right-thinking people'. 'Any attempt to justify or explain it as something else is misplaced,' he said at a press conference at Ballymena police station. He said that members of the minority ethnic community 'felt fear' and there will be a significant policing operation in the town in the coming days to reassure the community. 'I would strongly urge anyone who was involved in yesterday's disorder to reflect long and hard about their actions, they will have consequences,' he said. Mr Henderson said that police officers from England and Wales will be brought to Northern Ireland if needed to help the PSNI in the wake of the Ballymena disorder. He said: 'Should I need any additionality, I'm absolutely assured that my colleagues in policing in England and Wales, the National Police Operation Centre, stand fast and ready to support should we need that support.' The senior officer said police did not have specific intelligence that there would be a repeat of the violent scenes, but said a significant policing operation would be in place. A PSNI spokesperson said: 'At around 7.30pm, a planned vigil gathered in the Galgorm Road area before making its way towards Larne Street, onto Wakehurt Road and then down Queen Street. 'The vigil was initially peaceful as it made its way towards the Clonavon Terrace area of Ballymena. Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson speaking to the media following a protest in Ballymena over an alleged sexual assault in the Co Antrim town (Jonathan McCambridge/PA) 'Officers were present at the vigil to ensure an appropriate and proportionate policing response, due to the large number of people who had gathered in the area. 'A number of masked individuals then broke away from the vigil and began to build barricades, stockpiling missiles and attacking properties in the Clonavon Terrace area. 'Elements of the crowd then turned on to police and attacked officers with petrol bombs and masonry. 'This disorder was sustained and continued in the vicinity of Galgorm Street, Linenhall Street and Larne Road Link in the vicinity of the Braid.' The statement added: 'Police officers came under sustained attack over a number of hours with multiple petrol bombs, fireworks, heavy masonry and bricks thrown in their direction by masked rioters. 'Fifteen officers were injured with some requiring hospital treatment. 'Two police vehicles were also damaged during the disorder. 'A number of homes and businesses were damaged with windows and doors smashed. Four houses were damaged by fire with three people evacuated. 'The attacks on these properties are being investigated as racially motivated hate attacks. A damaged property in Clonavon Terrace in Ballymena (Jonathan McCambridge/PA) 'Windows were also smashed of several business units in Galgorm Parks in the early hours. 'In total, six properties in Clonavon Terrace have sustained damage to windows and doors during the disorder. 'During the course of the serious disorder, authorised police officers discharged one attenuating energy projectile (AEP) with one rioter struck.' As part of ongoing inquiries, police are also investigating a report of arson at the Tobar Park area of Cullybackey in the early hours of Tuesday. Shortly after 12.20am, it was reported that a petrol bomb had been thrown at a vehicle in the area which set it alight. Damage was caused to a nearby property, with a woman and two children inside. 'Obviously, the reports of sexual assault in the area are extremely distressing, but there is no justification for attacks on police officers while they continue to protect local communities. Police attacked with fireworks on second night of violence in Northern Ireland

Police were attacked with fireworks during a second night of anti-migrant riots in Northern Ireland following the attempted rape of a teenage girl. Crowds of masked rioters launched fireworks at riot police in Ballymena, County Antrim, on Tuesday night. The disorder came a day after two 14-year-old boys, thought to be Romanian, appeared in court charged with the attempted rape of a girl. Fireworks and other projectiles were launched at police officers and their armoured land rovers as about 300 people gathered in the vicinity of Clonavon Terrace, in the town centre. A large fire was started by rioters shortly after 9pm in the middle of North Road, an A-road which overlooks the area. A water cannon and rubber bullets have been used against the rioters to contain the 'serious disorder'. The unrest has been condemned as 'racist thuggery' by police. Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson said the violence was 'clearly racially motivated and targeted at our minority ethnic community and police'. A 29-year-old man has been charged with riotous behaviour following the disorder and will appear before Ballymena magistrates' court on Thursday. The victim's family condemned the riots, which were reminiscent of the disorder in England and Northern Ireland after the murder of three girls at a dance class in Southport last year. The Prime Minister's official spokesman said 'there is no justification for attacks on police officers while they continue to protect local communities'. Jim Allister, the North Antrim MP, said Ballymena had been 'overburdened' by 'unchecked migration', which was a source of 'past and future tensions'. On Monday, masked rioters threw petrol bombs, masonry, fireworks, and bricks at police after splitting from a peaceful vigil and setting up barricades in the Clonavon Terrace area of the town. Several officers needed hospital treatment and two police vehicles were damaged. Along Clonavon Terrace, six houses had their windows smashed, with two of them taped off after suffering significant fire damage. Those attacks are being treated as racially motivated hate crimes. In one video, one woman was recorded saying: 'If they are not local, let them f---ing stay there.'
