ASX smashes through 8700 as Wall Street rally lifts all boats

BHP belts out record copper and iron ore
Mesoblast soars after booking first Ryoncil sales in US
At lunchtime in the east, the ASX 200 was up over 1% and trading above 8700 for the first time, with all 11 sectors in the green.
Wall Street laid the groundwork overnight, notching up fresh records across the board.
The rally came off stronger-than-expected US retail sales and a fifth straight week of falling jobless claims.
Nvidia added more than 1%, pushing its market cap towards a gobsmacking US$4.25 trillion.
"Right now, as long as the markets don't have a reason to sell off, they're going to go up," said Steve Sosnick of Interactive Brokers.
Asian markets caught the Wall Street wave this morning, with TSMC jumping 2% in Taiwan on bullish AI vibes.
Back home, this is where things stood at around 1pm AEST:
BHP (ASX:BHP) was the main headline after reporting a massive annual ops review.
Record copper. Record iron ore. And some of the best numbers BHP's ever put on the board.
Iron ore out of WA smashed records, with South Flank running above nameplate in its first full year. Even the coal division chipped in, lifting output 5% despite getting slapped by wet weather and moody geology at Broadmeadow.
Over in copper, BHP pumped out over 2 million tonnes group-wide, a record haul in a metal that's fast becoming the lifeblood of the clean energy boom.
Escondida in Chile hit its highest production in 17 years, Spence broke records, and Copper SA wrapped the year with a strong June quarter. On the downside, costs and timelines have blown out at BHP's next growth project, the Jansen potash mine in Canada.
BHP's shares were up 2%.
Meanwhile another large cap, Mesoblast (ASX:MSB), was off the leash, up a scorching 29% after reporting its first quarter of revenue from the US launch of Ryoncil.
The stem cell therapy, approved by the FDA in March for kids with steroid-resistant graft-versus-host disease, pulled in US$13.2 million in sales. Another US$1.6 million rolled in from royalties in Japan.
Elsewhere, Fletcher Building (ASX:FBU) jumped up 3% despite warning that the construction market won't bounce back until at least 2027.

Rare Newtown brick home beats hopes by $110K

A rare triple-pointed brick character house in blue chip Newtown that attracted crowds of buyers from Melbourne and beyond has sold for more than $100,000 above its price expectations. The three-bedroom period home at 365 Shannon Ave was snapped up for $1.23m at Saturday's auction after three bidders contested the 697sq m property. McGrath, Newtown agent Georgie Shaw said two bidders competed for the home down to the wire, with an expat family planning to return to Geelong securing the keys to the Edwardian era house. Mid-century home designed by AFL great up for sale Geelong's top homes of FY25 worth over $120m The property had been listed with a $1m to $1.1m price range. The character-filled house blends Edwardian charm and comfort in a renovation completed since the property last sold for $797,000 in 2018. That project remodelled the rear living area, where the open-plan kitchen and dining zone offers a butler's pantry and flows onto an expansive deck. The main lounge has an open fireplace and ornate period detailed ceiling, with the high ceilings, a wide entrance hall and leadlight details among the character features on show. 'A lot of the interest was from Melbourne buyers – inner Melbourne suburbs such as Elsternwick, Albert Park and Middle Park that are dying for that type of beautiful brick period home,' Ms Shaw said. 'And we just don't have many of them in Geelong, so obviously supply is low and demand was huge there. 'The facade was just so pretty and inside was just charming. It has pressed metal ceilings, original features, it had been really beautifully restored and renovated but still in keeping with the feel of the home.' Ms Shaw said the property attracted about 50 groups during the campaign, with 16 to 18 groups at each inspection. Even the main road position was not an issue for potential buyers, she said. 'Melbourne people are definitely not as deterred because they're used to it,' Ms Shaw said. 'I've got buyers that, for example, were living on Orrong Rd in Caulfield South, another group of buyers that came through were renting at High St, Armadale. 'Given inner-city Melbourne is so busy and the traffic flows 24/7, it's worse than Shannon Ave. 'And of an evening the traffic dies as there's no restaurants along there, no cafes so it's really only busy in certain times.' Ms Shaw said the double-brick construction, along with double glazing offered a surprising calm interior for buyers. 'That surprised a lot of people when once they stepped inside the house and closed the front door. 'They realised how solid it was and that all of the living areas were at the rear, with the double-front of the house being double-glazed, they saw even more value.'

ASX set to rise, Wall Street mixed; Trump labels Fed chief a ‘numbskull'

Wall Street is hanging around its records following some mixed profit reports, as General Motors and other big US companies give updates on how much President Donald Trump's tariffs are hurting or helping them. The S&P 500 was 0.1 per cent higher in late trading and on track to squeak to another all-time high. The Dow Jones was up 164 points, or 0.4 per cent, in late trade, and the Nasdaq composite was down 0.2 per cent after setting its own record. The Australian sharemarket is set to rise, with futures pointing to a gain of 40 points, or 0.5 per cent, at the open. The ASX edged 0.1 per cent higher on Tuesday. General Motors dropped 7.5 per cent despite reporting a stronger profit for the spring than analysts expected. The automaker said it's still expecting a $US4 billion-$US5 billion ($6.1 billion- $7.6 billion) hit to its results over 2025 because of tariffs and that it hopes to mitigate 30 per cent of that. GM also said it will feel more pain because of tariffs in the current quarter than it did during the spring. Loading That helped to offset big gains for some homebuilders after they reported stronger profits for the spring than Wall Street had forecast. D.R. Horton rallied 16.5 per cent, and PulteGroup jumped 11.4 per cent. That was even as both companies said homebuyers are continuing to deal with challenging conditions, including higher mortgage rates and an uncertain economy. So far, the US economy seems to be powering through all the uncertainty created by Trump's on-and-off tariffs. Many of Trump's stiff proposed taxes on imports are currently on pause, and the next big deadline is Aug. 1. Talks are underway on possible trade deals with other countries that could lower the proposed tariffs before they kick in. Companies are already feeling effects. Genuine Parts, the Atlanta-based company that sells auto and industrial replacement parts around the world, trimmed its profit forecast for the full year in order to incorporate 'all US tariffs currently in effect,' along with its updated expectations for business conditions in the second half of the year. Its stock rose 6.5 per cent after it reported a stronger profit for the latest quarter than analysts expected.
