It may seem like harmless downtime—hours spent scrolling through social media feeds, mindlessly consuming content. But neuroscientists are sounding the alarm: for adolescents, this habit known as "
doomscrolling
" isn't just killing time—it could be harming their mental health in dangerous and lasting ways.
According to a report from the
Daily Mail
, a new study has revealed that teens who spend more than two hours a day scrolling on phones or tablets double their risk of developing anxiety and are four times more likely to show signs of depression. The findings, published after a nine-month-long study of 580 adolescents, paint a sobering picture of how digital habits are quietly reshaping the emotional landscape of an entire generation.
From Habits to Harm: What the Study Found
The research team, led by Professor Emma Duerden, Canada's Research Chair in Neuroscience and
Learning Disorders
, focused on adolescents aged 12 to 17 with no prior mental health diagnoses. Shockingly, by the end of the study, 45 percent of participants displayed psychiatric symptoms significant enough to warrant further medical evaluation.
"This is really surprising," said Prof Duerden. "Before COVID-19, rates of anxiety in adolescents were between 8 and 15 percent. Now, we see almost half of the sample reporting heightened anxiety, which is alarming."
The study tracked not just the amount of screen time, but also the way it was used—whether teens were actively posting, chatting, or simply scrolling. It was the passive form of engagement, the relentless scroll of content without interaction—what's commonly called doomscrolling—that showed the strongest negative impact on mental well-being.

. NHS data from the UK shows that over 20 percent of children aged 8 to 16 had a probable mental health disorder in 2023—a sharp rise from 13 percent in 2017.
Prof Duerden emphasized that adolescence is a critical period for brain development, especially in areas governing emotion regulation and impulse control. "In past studies, we've seen teens report as much as 15 hours of daily screen time. They wake up, go on a screen, and stay on all day," she said.
Limiting screen time to under two hours a day, while encouraging physical activity, is among the most effective ways to support adolescent well-being. But as any modern parent knows, the solution is easier said than done.

City hospital's diabetes helpline gets more than 25,000 calls in 4 years
Kauvery Hospital's 24x7 diabetes helpline has completed a milestone of 1500 days of service since its launch in April 2021. The helpline is handled by a team of diabetes educators, physicians, dietitians, and data-monitoring experts. The helpline assists patients during hypoglycemic episodes, which happen when there is a sudden drop in blood sugar levels leading to fainting, confusion, or coma if not treated quickly, and interprets real-time Continuous Glucose Monitoring System data. Aravindan Selvaraj, Co-Founder and Executive Director, Kauvery Group of Hospitals, said the initiative did not end with the COVID crisis; the helpline was extended beyond the pandemic as diabetes was a complex, multi-system condition requiring 24/7 attention. According to the doctors, in one case, a woman with hypoglycemia was quickly stabilised through phone guidance to take fast-acting glucose, avoiding an emergency room visit. In another, a pregnant woman with high-risk gestational diabetes, initially advised to terminate her pregnancy, was supported through continuous glucose monitoring and expert guidance via the helpline, leading to the safe delivery of healthy twins. In 2024, the helpline managed 12,541 calls, a rise from 1,223 calls in 2021. Of these, 0.89% were emergencies, predominantly hypoglycemia, which were managed through immediate telephonic support and follow-ups.

King Cobra sightings at 9k ft in Everest region startles scientists
1 2 Dehradun: Ten King Cobras were recently spotted at elevations between 1,000 and 2,700 metres in the Everest region of Nepal, sparking concern among scientists who said the sightings could be linked to shifting climate patterns. The reptiles, typically found in lowland tropical habitats, appeared in areas including Gopaleshwor, Bhanjyang, Sokhol and Fulchowk in what experts described as an unusual development. Bishnu Pandey of the Institute of Forestry in Nepal said the sightings were a "recent phenomenon". He said, "We found King Cobra eggs in the Gauri Shankar Range just before the Covid-19 pandemic. Similarly, cobras were sighted in Jiri municipality, which lies between 1,600m and over 5,000m." He added that the snakes found in these areas were the same species as those seen in Nepal's Terai region and suggested climate change as the most likely cause of their movement to higher altitudes. Ramesh Chinnasamy, a scientist at the Wildlife Institute of India, said King Cobras typically inhabit rainforests and are naturally shy. He said, "While we cannot directly attribute this shift in distribution to climate change without a detailed scientific study, rising temperatures do tend to extend the active periods of King Cobras and other reptiles, potentially prompting them to expand their habitat range. Systematic research is needed to assess whether the sightings mark a broader ecological change or are isolated events." Wildlife biologist and King Cobra researcher Jignasu Dolia, based in Nainital, confirmed similar high-altitude sightings in Uttarakhand. He said, "King Cobras have been seen in parts of Kumaon, including Mukteshwar, which lies above 2,000 metres. Generally, cobra sightings diminish with increasing altitude, so these sightings are uncommon but not unusual." He added that long-term studies were vital to understanding how the species is responding to changing climate conditions. Meanwhile, a recent study has shown that King Cobras — the world's longest venomous snakes — are not a single species. Genetic data now reveals they comprise four distinct species, challenging the earlier classification under Ophiophagus hannah. Sanjiv Chaturvedi, chief conservator of forests (research), Uttarakhand forest department, acknowledged their adaptability. "Though they are native to rainforests, King Cobras show remarkable adaptability. In Corbett Tiger Reserve, for instance, they are found at elevations ranging from 300 to over 2,000 metres," he said. Supporting the climate shift theory, a recent ICIMOD study warned that temperatures across the eight countries of the Hindu Kush Himalayan region, including Nepal and India, are expected to remain 0.5°C to 2°C above long-term averages. Nepal has also recorded an increase in extreme weather events, and its maximum temperature is rising by an average of 0.05°C per year. Pharma firm Captab Biotech banned in Punjab for 3 years following adverse drug reactions
Chandigarh, The Punjab government has banned pharma company Captab Biotech for three years for manufacturing and supplying non-standard IV fluid or normal saline bottles to the Punjab Health System Corporation , a minister said on Thursday. Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh said the company has also been debarred for three years from participating in any state government tenders. Contracts for 11 items being supplied to the PHSC have also been cancelled with immediate effect, he said. "Besides, performance security of ₹3,30,000 of the firm has been forfeited, and pending payments have been withheld," Balbir Singh said. The ban came after the Punjab government raised the matter with the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation for taking action under the provisions of the Drug and Cosmetics Act. The firm came under scrutiny when a few patients at government health institutions in Amritsar and Sangrur showed adverse reactions after the use of normal saline. The incident led a joint team of the Food and Drug Administration and the CDSCO to take samples of the solution. The minister said the company has also recalled the remaining stock of normal saline. "Besides this, the role of the three labs that initially passed the samples of this company that later got declared 'Non-specified Quality' is also under scrutiny of the department for lapses," he said. Meanwhile, after a 'severe heatwave' warning by the India Meteorological Department , the minister also issued a public advisory, urging all residents to take precautions against the extreme heat. He emphasised they stay hydrated and always carry water when stepping outdoors. Special care must be taken of vulnerable groups, such as newborns, children, pregnant women, the elderly, individuals with obesity or mental illness, and those suffering from heart diseases or chronic conditions, he said. He stressed that labourers, construction workers, and street vendors, who work under direct sunlight, take frequent breaks in shaded areas and sip water regularly during peak heat hours. The minister advised the public to avoid outdoor activities between 12 pm and 3 pm, wear light, loose-fitting cotton clothes, and cover their heads with caps, turbans, or dupattas when stepping out. He encouraged the consumption of seasonal fruits and hydrating homemade drinks like lemon water, 'lassi', and coconut water, while avoiding alcohol, caffeinated beverages, fried, or stale food. On the rise in COVID-19 cases in the country, Balbir Singh urged the public not to panic. People should avoid crowded places and wear masks, especially elderly individuals, immunocompromised persons, pregnant women, and those with underlying health conditions, as they are more vulnerable to infection, he said.
