Larut MP Hamzah Zainudin's mother-in-law dies in Ipoh house fire, husband hospitalised while four others rescued
Bernama reported Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director Sayani Saidon confirming the incident, stating that the deceased has been identified as 84-year-old Salmiah Nyak Matt.
Her husband, Abdul Ghani Ngah, is currently receiving treatment at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB).
'The deceased is the mother-in-law (of Hamzah),' she said briefly via WhatsApp.
Sayani added that four other individuals were involved in the incident — three men and one woman.
'One of the victims, an 83-year-old elderly man who was in an upstairs room, suffered breathing difficulties and was taken to hospital by the Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS),' she said.
She added that the operation concluded at 2.02am.
Meanwhile, Ipoh District Police Chief ACP Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said authorities received an emergency call about the fire at 9.19pm.
Preliminary investigations conducted with the Fire Department's forensic unit confirmed that the blaze involved a two-storey house occupied by a family of six.
'Four other family members, aged between 18 and 49, were rescued and did not sustain any injuries,' he said.
Abang Zainal Abidin added that further investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire, and the case has been classified as sudden death (SDR).
He also urged members of the public with any information to contact the Ipoh District Control Centre (DCC) at 05-2542222.

Defence minister: Arrests of few officers over alleged smuggling do not tarnish integrity of Armed Forces
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 — Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin has stressed that the recent arrest of several Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) officers does not reflect the overall integrity of the country's defence institution. He said these were isolated incidents which should not undermine the people's respect and trust for the armed forces. However, he advised military personnel to steer clear of any unlawful actions to avoid tarnishing the image of the armed forces. 'I hope no one abuses the rank or position entrusted to them to commit unlawful acts. I emphasise that this case does not represent the MAF. The MAF remains strong, respected and trusted by the people to defend the nation's sovereignty,' he said when launching the ministry's Fly the Jalur Gemilang Campaign in conjunction with National Month 2025 here today. Earlier, the media reported that three serving and two former MAF officers were among 10 people arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to assist in investigations into a smuggling syndicate in southern Peninsular Malaysia. At the same time, Mohamed Khaled stressed that the spirit of nationhood must be instilled in every citizen, especially among MAF personnel and the defence community. He said the MAF is not only a symbol of physical defence but also of sovereignty, integrity and the nation's independence. 'When we talk about independence, we immediately picture the warriors who defended the country. Every parade at Dataran Merdeka and Warriors' Day is a manifestation of the MAF's image, and we must uphold this dignified image,' he said. Mohamed Khaled also urged society to revive the patriotic spirit and reject any elements that could threaten national unity. MACC source: Ex-military intel duo already remanded also linked to tobacco smuggling ring raided yesterday
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 — The two former Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) intelligence officers arrested by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) earlier this month may also be linked to the tobacco, cigarette and cigar smuggling operation raided yesterday. New Straits Times (NST) quoted an anonymous source saying that the MACC is now probing the possibility of a larger network involving enforcement officers working with smugglers and providing protection for the ring. 'The smuggled cigarettes and cigars were stored in private warehouses before being distributed,' said the source. 'Based on preliminary investigations, this smuggling activity may have also been facilitated by certain enforcement officers who provided easy clearance for the contraband at the country's entry points, protected warehouse operations and failed to take enforcement action.' The source also said the syndicate allegedly used false import declarations by altering Customs Department's codes or item descriptions. In return, the payments to enforcement officers were said to have been made in cash or via intermediaries to conceal the money trail. NST also cited MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki stressing that stern action would be taken against those implicated. 'We won't compromise and will take stern action against any party involved in activities that undermine the integrity of the country's control systems and cause leakage of government revenue,' he said. Yesterday, the MACC 14 locations in the Klang Valley and Johor were raided in Ops Sikaro, targetting business premises and company owners involved in the tobacco, cigar, and liquor supply trade. The illegal activities are believed to have caused the government losses of more than RM250 million in tax revenue between 2020 and 2024. Earlier this month, 10 individuals, including five senior MAF officers, were remanded to assist MACC's Ops Sohor which is investigating a smuggling syndicate operating in the country's southern area. Others remanded included two journalists from an online media agency who were formerly military intelligence officers, a company manager, an administrative assistant at the Malaysian Medical Association, and a foreign woman.
