Sean Grehan targets Premier League dream after Bohemians heroics and hopes to follow in Jake O'Brien's footsteps

Sean Grehan is on loan to Bohemians from Crystal Palace - but he hopes to mark his mark with the Premier League outfit in the future

The ex-Cork City man flourished at Lyon after loan spells at Swindon Town and Molenbeek with Grehan gaining experience at, first, Carlisle United and, now, Bohs.
And the Dubliner said: 'I take a lot from Jake. I played with him a bit when I was at Palace.
'The path he has had hasn't been easy, he had loan spells himself when he probably didn't play as much as he wanted and look at him now, he's doing unbelievable things.

'I take a lot from what Jake has done and try to replicate that myself.
'I talk to Jake a bit, he's always there if I ever need advice. What he's done is a good example for me to try to do the same.'
Grehan is due to return to Palace, where he is under contract for next season, in June.
The 21-year-old was non-committal on whether prolonging his stay with Bohs was on the agenda but boss Alan Reynolds reckon it will be tough to hold onto him.

Reynolds said: 'I don't want to talk him up too much but he's outstanding. While we have him, we'll enjoy him.
'A player like that I could see him playing at a very high level. I'd love to keep him.'

Grehan made just one first-team appearance for Bohs, in the FAI Cup against College Corinthians, in 2021.
He left at the end of the season but was in limbo until the following summer as interested clubs could not agree a compensation figure.
But he was handed a new three-year deal in 2023 in recognition of his progress.
And Grehan said: 'It's been great for me, going over there I've developed so much as a footballer, technically and stuff.
'I feel like I'm maturing even more coming back here, these games will only help me and my career. I'm delighted with how it's going.
'I know I've to go back in June and I'll see what happens then. Palace are onto me every week, every after game, it's not like they've just left me here.
'I've really enjoyed it, the fans are unbelievable, probably the best in the country. It's great coming here and playing in front of them and when the place is bouncing like that you can't beat it.'
Injury-time winners tend to produce that sort of atmosphere with Grehan just grateful hewas in the right place at the right time to deliver the goods.
He said: 'I just saw the ball floating into the box and I was praying that it fell to me and it did thank God and I just hit it as well as I could. I was buzzing, the atmosphere was unreal.'
Earlier, Bohs had fallen behind to Chris Forrester's penalty after Axel Sjoberg's cross struck Grehan on the arm, before Rob Cornwall leveled in the 90th minute.
Grehan said: 'My hand was by my side and it was smashed at me. He shot an absolute rocket at me and I couldn't move my hand.
"I thought it was harsh. Some things don't go in your favour in football. I'm just glad we came back.'
It was the second time in four days they had come back, beating Shamrock Rovers 3-2 on Monday, having trailed 2-0 with 20 minutes left.
Grehan said: 'It's probably unheard of. It just shows the togetherness we have in the group.
'You're coming in at half-time 1-0 down but you still have that belief going out into the second half, like we did on Monday, that we can do it again.
'It just shows the group we have is really strong and have that mindset we can beat anyone,'
That was not a mindset that was obvious in earlier games but the Ireland under-21 international said: 'It can be a bit of luck at times, I don't think things were falling in our favour in the first few games and now it finally is.
'I think we deserved that now in the last two games, that bit of luck. Hopefully we don't put ourselves in situations like that anymore and we can go into games not trailing at half-time and giving ourselves a job to do.'
FORWARD THINKER
Whilst throwing a centre-half up for set-pieces at the end of game may be commonplace, Grehan's involvement in attacks is generally more subtle.
The ex-St Kevin's Boys player joked that he has always been a defender because he is too slow to play elsewhere.
But he is regularly found in the wide channels of Bohs' opponents half. Reynolds explained: 'We can set it up to leave him go to join in because he's so good at that. It's a way of us playing.'
And Grehan added: 'I like to get forward when I need to and help the team out. I felt like I created a few chances in the first half against St Pat's stepping in with it.
'It's probably something I need to add more to my game. I'm a defender first of all so I need to make sure I do that but when I get the chance I like stepping in.
'Rennie gives me the opportunity to get forward, he likes it when I drive in with it.
"He gives me the licence to step in and show my quality. The way we play kind of suits me, it's a bit more of a back three.'

Shels boss Joey O'Brien: 'It's still all to play for'
Shelbourne boss Joey O'Brien likes to describe European ties as "four halves of football". With two halves to go in the Conference League play-off against Linfield, his team are looking good thanks to a rip-roaring 3-1 win at Tolka Park on Thursday night. However O'Brien is taking nothing for granted ahead of next week's trip to Windsor Park. "We have an advantage going up there like the last time, but it's still all to play for," he said. "Yous are probably bored listening to it, we're going up there to attack the game, to go and win the game. That's what it's all about. It's the same mentality that we had when we went over to play Rijeka and Qarabag. We're going to win. "So that's going to be the same thing. We'll be going up there next week to win the game. It's a small advantage we have going up there next week. It's going to be a hell of a challenge. It's one we're looking forward to." It's a familiar path for Shels, who beat Linfield over two legs in the first round of the Champions League qualifiers. After both sides slid down to the third-tier Conference League in UEFA's snakes-and-ladders qualification process, we arrived at this rematch. Goals from Harry Wood, Mipo Odubeko and Evan Caffrey have the Reds in the driving seat, but Linfield played for over 70 minutes with ten men due to Matthew Fitzpatrick's controversial red card. Indeed they would have levelled things on the night had Kieran Offord converted a penalty to make it 2-2. Wessel Speel saved it, and Cafrey nabbed that all-important third goal to delight a partisan Tolka crowd. "At 2-0, we were sort of in control but probably the lads felt they were safe," admitted O'Brien. "I think sometimes on the football pitch, when you think you're safe, that's when you're unsafe really, you just come off it a little bit. We were made to pay obviously, 2-1. "And then they get the penalty. It's a massive moment by Wes to keep it 2-1. We made a couple of subs, we got back into it and it sort of settled us down. We had control of the game and it was great to get the third goal. "I think we said it loads of times. European football, for me, since I was playing years ago, it was always just four halves of football. That was the message at half-time, one half done. Go on and win the next half. Now it's two halves done with still loads to play for." Shels do have the luxury of a free weekend coming up. Last Sunday they looked leggy in defeat to St Pat's in the FAI Cup. With no league game until Sunday week, when Galway United come to Drumcondra, O'Brien has the chance to freshen up some bodies. "It's great not having a game on the weekend to be honest," he said. "We have some sore bodies because with the European Games and the league and the cup, the way it's been, it's been relentless, really. It gives us a couple of days now to sort of get back on the training pitch. "We haven't had much training over the last few weeks, really. It's just been a sort of rest, recovery, play. It gives us a nice build into that to actually get some good work on the training pitch. The lads are really pushing each other to try and get into the starting team." This could be the start of a truly memorable week for Irish football. Shamrock Rovers' brilliant 2-1 victory away to Santa Clara heightened the chances that two League of Ireland clubs will be playing in the league stage of the Conference League over the autumn/winter. It's a tantalising prospect, with O'Brien adding: "It would be brilliant. I'm sure Stephen (Bradley) will say the exact same thing, that there's still loads of football to be played. Only two halves done, two halves to go.

European qualifiers: Crystal Palace win without Eze
Crystal Palace put the impending departure of Eberechi Eze to one side as they started their Conference League campaign by edging out Fredrikstad 1-0. The FA Cup winners, who were demoted from the Europa League for breaching multi-club ownership rules, left Eze out of their squad on Thursday night as he closes in on a £60m (€69m) move to Arsenal. Palace boss Oliver Glasner told Channel 5 that Eze had phoned him earlier to say he was not feeling well, but his absence was a subplot as Jean-Philippe Mateta scored on a historic night at Selhurst Park. Mateta nodded the hosts in front in the 54th minute in Palace's first match in a European competition, giving them the upper hand over their Norwegian opposition ahead of next week's play-off return leg. Battling Hibernian went down 2-1 to Legia Warsaw at Easter Road but Josh Mulligan's late goal gave the home side a lifeline in the tie. Jean-Pierre Nsame opened the scoring from the spot following a Rocky Bushiri handball defending his goal and, just before the break, Pawell Wszolek fired in a second from close range. Hibs came out for the second half fired up to make amends and they got their rewards in the 85th minute with a Mulligan strike to give them hope ahead of next week's trip to the Polish capital. Shelbourne 0-0 Linfield Matthew Fitzpatrick is shown an early red card, for a high challenge on Milan Mbeng 📱 Updates: 📺 Watch live on @RTE2 and @RTEPlayer #UECL — RTÉ Sport (@RTEsport) August 21, 2025 Shelbourne took a giant leap towards booking their spot in the league phase after seeing off Northern Ireland's Linfield 3-1 in Dublin. Harry Wood's penalty in first-half stoppage time and a goal from Mipo Odubeko a minute into the resumption gave Irish side Shelbourne the upper hand in the contest, after Matthew Fitzpatrick was shown a red card in the 18th minute. Kieran Offord pulled one back after 53 minutes but Evan Caffrey struck in the final quarter of an hour to restore the two-goal cushion and put Shelbourne in the boxseat ahead of the return leg in Belfast. Daniel Grant and Daniel Mandroiu struck either side of the interval as Shamrock Rovers came from behind to claim a famous 2-1 win at Santa Clara, who went ahead through Vinicius Lopes in Ponta Delgada. In the Europa League, Ester Sokler headed a late equaliser as Aberdeen fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 at home to 10-man FCSB in the first leg of their play-off. The tie looked to be slipping away from the Scottish Cup winners when the Romanian champions went ahead in the 32nd minute and then overcame the dismissal of Juri Cisotti soon afterwards to double their lead in the first minute of the second half. However, goals from substitutes Dante Polvara and Sokler in the closing half-hour brought the Dons level and ensured there is all to play for in the second leg in Bucharest next Thursday.
