Al Nahda, Olympic team win openers in 2025 Khareef Tournament
The 2025 Khareef Club Tournament, organised by the Oman Football Association, kicked off at the Al Saada Sports Complex Stadium on Sunday, featuring five clubs along with the Oman Olympic team, divided into two groups. Group A includes Dhofar, Al Nahda and Al Shabab, while Group B consists of Al Nasr, Seeb and the Olympic team. The tournament will run until August 3.
The opening round witnessed two intense matches. The first brought together Dhofar and Al Nahda in Group A, where Al Nahda secured a 2-1 victory. The match started with high intensity from Al Nahda, who applied constant pressure through the midfield and flanks. In the 13th minute, Mohammed al Ghafri received a precise pass and fired a strong shot past goalkeeper Mazin al Kasbi to give Al Nahda the lead. Just two minutes later, Azzan al Tamtemi appeared to double the score with a powerful strike, but the goal was overturned after the referee reviewed the play on VAR and ruled it offside.
Dhofar gradually gained more control of the ball and managed to equalise in the 40th minute when Fahd al Hajri broke through Al Nahda's defence, went on one with goalkeeper Faiz al Rashidi, and slotted the ball into the net, ending the first half 1-1.
In the second half, Al Nahda regained momentum with organised possession and bold attacking moves. In the 60th minute, they were awarded a penalty after a strong challenge from a Dhofar defender. The decision was confirmed by VAR, and Ahmed al Kaabi converted from the spot with a well placed shot to the left of Mazin al Kasbi, restoring Al Nahda's lead. In the closing minutes, both coaches made tactical substitutions, with play mostly concentrated in midfield. Dhofar made some late attempts to equalise, but Al Nahda held firm until the final whistle to claim their first win of the tournament with a 2-1 scoreline.
In the second match of the Khareef Championship, the Olympic team earned a deserved 2-0 victory over Al Nasr. The match began with pressure from both sides, and Al Nasr nearly opened the scoring in the eighth minute when Awad al Shahri launched a swift counter attack, but goalkeeper Ibrahim al Kindi made an excellent save. In the 24th minute, the Olympic team responded with a well-organised play that ended with Masoud al Bahri firing a powerful shot into the net, putting the Olympic team ahead.
Al Nasr pushed for an equaliser, with their best chance coming in the 29th minute when Al Mutasim al Noubi's shot went narrowly wide. Another opportunity came before half-time through Jassim al Noubi, but the Olympic defence intervened at the last moment, ending the first half with the Olympic team leading 1-0.
The second half saw both teams maintain the same line-ups and continue exchanging attacks. The Olympic team doubled their lead in the 70th minute through substitute Yasar al Balushi, who unleashed a superb strike into the net. Al Nasr tried to reduce the deficit in the closing stages, but the Olympic defence handled the pressure well, sealing a 2-0 win.
The tournament continues on Tuesday with two key matches: Al Shabab versus Dhofar at 5 pm, and Seeb versus Al Nasr at 8:30 pm. Al Shabab, led by national coach Hassan Rustam, will aim to maintain their positive momentum after winning the Super Cup, while Dhofar, under Musbah al Saadi, seeks to recover from their opening loss. The Seeb-Al Nasr clash is expected to be closely fought, with Seeb looking to bounce back from their Super Cup defeat, and Al Nasr hoping to improve after their loss to the Olympic team.
The tournament will proceed as scheduled, with the second round on July 29 and the third round on July 31. The competition will conclude on August 3 with the final match between the group leaders to determine the Khareef Club Championship winner.

Plans to retrieve Dahlmeier's body abandoned
ISLAMABAD: Rescuers in Pakistan abandoned plans to retrieve the body of twice Olympic biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier of Germany to respect her last wish and avoid risking more lives, fellow climber Thomas Huber said on Thursday. Dahlmeier, 31, was swept away in a rockfall close to the summit of the 6,069 metres Laila Peak in the Karakoram mountain range on Monday, her management and local officials said. She was declared dead on Wednesday evening after air and ground operations to rescue her from the peak in the Gilgit Baltistan (GB) region was not successful. Pakistani officials said on Wednesday that rescue teams led by international climbers and local high-altitude porters would launch anew operation to retrieve her body. "When we saw Laura's body it was clear that she (had) left us. As experienced mountain climbers we decided to not go and retrieve her body," Huber, who's in the GB region, said over the phone. "The body was in a very difficult terrain which would have meant a great risk for the rescue team," said Huber, also a German who was part of the team that went up to rescue Dahlmeier. "We decided to respect Laura's last wish. She didn't want anyone to risk his or her life to retrieve her." The regional government in the GB will also respect the decision taken by the rescuers and the climber's family, a spokesman said. "We will go with the same decision and make no effort to retrieve the body since it involves risk to human life," spokesman Faizullah Faraq said. "She will be considered buried on the mountain like many local and international climbers in the past," he added. Dahlmeier's management said that it was her "expressed and written wish that in a case like this, nobody should risk their life to rescue her. It was her wish to leave her body behind at the mountain in a case like this." Her family was on the way to Pakistan and was expected to arrive in the country on Thursday or Friday, said Karrar Haidri of Al pine Club of Pakistan, a body that regulates expeditions in the mountains. Dahlmeier's climbing partner Marina Eva was rescued and brought to the base camp by a group of climbers and local high altitude porters on Tuesday, tour operator Mohamed Iqbal said. — dpa

The two-time Olympic gold medal-winning German biathlete was confirmed dead on Wednesday, two days after being caught in a rockslide high in the mountains of northern Pakistan. Seeb top Al Nasr, Dhofar down Al Shabab
MUSCAT, JULY 30 The 2025 Khareef Club Tournament heated up as the second round kicked off, bringing plenty of excitement and competitiveness. Dhofar secured a hard-fought victory over Al Shabab with a narrow 1–0 win, while Seeb confirmed their readiness to compete for the title with an important 2–1 triumph over Al Nasr. In the first match, tactical caution dominated the first half between Dhofar and Al Shabab, with both sides closing down spaces and playing disciplined defence, leaving few chances to break the deadlock. The first real threat came in the 21st minute when Brazilian forward Gioulison Lima fired a shot that failed to trouble Dhofar goalkeeper Mazin al Kasbi. Dhofar responded with a dangerous attack led by Abdullah Zahir in the 27th minute, but Al Shabab keeper Abdulmalik al Badri was alert to the danger. The first half ended goalless, with fans eagerly anticipating a different scenario in the second half. Early in the second half, Dhofar capitalised on a defensive lapse from Al Shabab. A long ball found Abdullah Zahir, who controlled it well, weaved through the defence, and fired a powerful shot into the net in the 51st minute to put his team ahead. Al Shabab thought they had equalised in the 73rd minute, but their goal was overturned after a VAR review for offside. Despite late pressure from Al Shabab, Dhofar's defence and goalkeeper held firm until the final whistle. In the second match, Seeb dominated Al Nasr with attacking intent from the start. Zahir al Aghbari opened the scoring in the 20th minute after a precise pass inside the penalty area. Al Nasr's situation worsened when Abdullah al Musharafi was sent off in the 39th minute. However, they quickly found an equaliser just two minutes later when Molhem al Sunaidy exploited the goalkeeper's advanced position, lobbing the ball into the net to level the score before halftime. In the second half, Al Seeb made full use of Al Nasr's numerical disadvantage, piling on sustained attacking pressure. Al Aghbari struck again in the 65th minute, finishing off a well-timed pass from Abdulaziz al Maqbali to restore the lead. Despite Al Nasr's efforts to equalise, Seeb's organised defence preserved their advantage until the final whistle. DECISIVE CLASHES This evening will see two decisive clashes that will determine the finalists. The Oman Olympic team faces Seeb in a crucial battle for the top spot in Group B, while Al Nahda take on Al Shabab in Group A in a do-or-die encounter, with both teams eyeing a place in the final. In Group B, the Olympic team heads into their match against Seeb with high concentration. Coach Badr al Maimani relies on gradual build-up play and exploiting wing speed, a tactic that was evident in their comfortable win over Al Nasr in the opening match. However, the clash against Seeb will be a bigger test for the team's defensive resilience, especially against Seeb's dangerous attacking duo led by Zahir al Aghbari, who netted both goals in the previous round. The Olympic team will need to control the game tempo and limit space for Seeb's key playmakers. As for Seeb, coached by Romanian Valeriu Tita, the objective is clear: secure qualification. The team has shown great efficiency in converting half-chances and benefits from the experience of its players in high-stake matches. Seeb is expected to apply high pressure in the opening quarter to seek an early goal that could disrupt the Olympic team's plans. In Group A, the Al Nahda-Al Shabab clash promises to be a tactical battle. Al Nahda will aim to continue their winning run after defeating Dhofar in the opening round. They are known for their defensive discipline and quick counter-attacks, making use of their pace in transitions. Al Shabab, on the other hand, will play under pressure as they need a win to bounce back from their defeat to Dhofar in the second round. The team is well-organised in midfield but needs greater attacking efficiency in front of goal.
