Miguel Angel Russo will be Boca Juniors' new coach, club spokesman confirms
BUENOS AIRES, May 26 (Reuters) - Miguel Angel Russo is set to return as coach of Boca Juniors ahead of the Club World Cup, a club spokesman confirmed on Monday.
Russo will take the reins for his third stint with the Argentine giants, having previously coached the team in 2007 and 2020-2021, leading them to win four titles, including the Copa Libertadores.
After leaving Boca, the experienced 69-year-old coach spent time at Rosario Central and most recently at San Lorenzo, with whom he suffered elimination from the Argentine league semi-finals on Sunday.
"Miguel and I have come to an agreement. All he has to do now is officially sever his ties with San Lorenzo, which should be easy for him," the spokesman told Reuters, declining to offer further details.
Russo will replace Fernando Gago, who was sacked last month after Boca lost the Argentine Superclasico against arch-rivals River Plate and had a poor run including getting knocked out of the Libertadores in the preliminary round.
Boca start their Club World Cup campaign on June 16 in the United States, where they will compete in Group C against Bayern Munich, Benfica and Auckland City.

He feels Fernandes has been "brilliant" but his lack of a clear position "confuses the whole system". "They are talking about £100m for him, Man United cannot say no to that," he told The Overlap Fan Debate. "I know he has been brilliant and carried the team on his back, but where does he actually play, what is his position? "Do you see him as a number 10? Do you see him as a holding midfielder? He almost confuses the whole system. I mean, he has been brilliant, don't get me wrong. But when you're getting £100m for him, you snap your hands and take it." Meanwhile, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher agreed and felt Fernandes didn't have a defined role in Amorim's team, comparing him to a "kid in the school yard". "I've always described Bruno Fernandes as a great talent but not a great player," Carragher said. "Where does he play? "He's a bit mad in that he just runs all over the place, like a kid in the school yard. "The best player in the school yard doing everything but in a really poor team. I don't think he's ever had any discipline in those No.10 positions." Amorim has been insistent he doesn't want to lose Fernandes and has tipped the Portuguese playmaker to spearhead the team's revival. He said: "We've talked about this many times. You can see by his [Bruno Fernandes'] performances. You can see by his leadership. "You can see the passion he has for the game. In difficult moments, Bruno is the guy who takes responsibility. He should do it because he is the captain."

But the transfer saga took another twist on Saturday, when Fernandes posted a mysterious message in Portuguese on social media. Translated to English, it reads: 'If you tried and failed, congratulations! There are people who don't even try.' Naturally, football fans were quick to put on their tin foil hats and attempt to decode what exactly Fernandes meant. Many seemed convinced the message confirms that the Portugal international will be departing the Red Devils, with one supporter on Reddit writing: 'He's gone. Tried but couldn't save the club.' Another added: 'He's leaving. He tried his very best throughout his time with us, and gave it his all, but it wasn't enough. 'And there are many our players who didn't even try, or give it their all, or did their best, or display the same commitment and drive that he has.' 'Sounds like he's leaving,' another concurred. Everton activate option to buy Charly Alcaraz from Flamengo
Everton have made Carlos Alcaraz the first buy of David Moyes ' second spell in charge by activating their option to buy him for £12m. The Argentinian midfielder, who was on loan at Goodison Park for the second half of the season, has signed a two-year deal with the Merseyside club. The 22-year-old leaves Flamengo after just 19 games and having played for four clubs in the last two seasons. Alcaraz, who was signed by Southampton in 2022, spent some of the 2023-24 campaign on loan at Juventus before being bought by Flamengo. He made a positive impression in his first few months at Everton, playing 16 times and getting three assists and two goals, including a last-day winner at Newcastle. The departure of Abdoulaye Doucoure, who was often competing with Alcaraz for the position behind the striker in Moyes' system, could allow him to start more often next season.
