Hinduja Group's Ashok Leyland set to rev up West Asia growth plans
Driven by rising share of export market sales, Hinduja Group's Indian flagship company Ashok Leyland is set to expand its footprint in West Asia with a new manufacturing unit in Saudi Arabia. Chairman Dheeraj Hinduja told Business Standard that the company is in the final stages of coming up with a new unit in the region. It would have a product mix of electric buses, light trucks and conventional vehicles. Though the plan is to start as an assembly unit initially, depending on the demand, it may go for localisation, going ahead. He added that 2025-26 is set to be the best year for the company's exports. This comes at a time when exports witnessed a massive surge of 30 per cent year-on-year (Yo-Y) to 15,255 units in FY25. Of this, around 40 per cent came from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, according to company sources. Adding to this success, export volume increased by 29 per cent during the first quarter of the current financial year, as the entire commercial vehicle industry is seeing flat growth. 'We are in the final stages of exploration of another facility in the Middle East (West Asia). The Middle East numbers have been growing exceptionally well, especially in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia markets. Our inclination is to look at Saudi as the new destination for Ashok Leyland,' Hinduja said. Interestingly, the aggressive move to West Asia comes amid the company's electric vehicle arm Switch Mobility announcing the shutdown of its Sherburn facility in the UK early this year. This will be the company's second unit in West Asia after the Ras Al Khaimah assembly unit in the UAE for buses and trucks that started in 2009. 'Our plant in the region is already close to full capacity. It has the capacity to manufacture more than 6,000 vehicles per year. Hence, we are in the process of establishing a new plant,' said Balaji K M, chief financial officer, Ashok Leyland. 'People see our buses as an Emirati brand. To begin with, it will start as an assembly unit. Since Saudi is a large market, depending on how it grows, we will take it forward,' Hinduja added. 'The products will be a mix of electric buses, light trucks, and also conventional vehicles as well. It will be an Ashok Leyland plant, not Switch Mobility's,' he said. The lion's share of Ashok Leyland's international sales is coming from the GCC, South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc), and Africa. 'Every time we have enhanced the capacity at Ras Al Khaimah, it has never been enough. From an international operations perspective, it will be the best year that Ashok Leyland has seen,' Hinduja said. The decision to shut down production in the Switch UK unit was taken owing to several factors like lower demand and higher production, among others. 'We will use our Indian or UAE base to supply to the UK and European markets in the future. We are working on a number of products and have not exited the UK. We will continue to service the market for existing buses that are operating there. From a production perspective, we think India or Ras Al Khaimah will be far more competitive as a location rather than manufacturing in Europe itself,' he said.

India gets relief as China removes export restrictions on rare earth magnets
After months of speculation, Beijing has withdrawn its export restriction on rare earth magnets to India. The move is some respite for automakers and component makers, especially those engaged in electric vehicle (EV) projects, who were in the hot seat due to the supply chain squeeze. Personalised Offers on Mahindra BE 6 Check Offers Check Offers India depends on China for over 80 per cent of its magnet imports (Photo is representational)(AP File) Why rare earths matter Rare earth magnets may not sound like the backbone of the auto sector, but they quietly are. From electric traction motors to power steering, sensors and infotainment units, they are ubiquitous in a contemporary vehicle. EVs specifically depend on motor-grade magnets to drive production lines forward. (Also read: Tata Motors faces no production impact of rare earth magnet crisis, Q1 FY26 profit tanks 63%: CFO PB Balaji) China's dominance in this space has been well known, it accounts for the lion's share of global supply. That is why when Beijing imposed restrictions, Indian manufacturers had little choice but to either pay more for limited stock or explore alternative sources in markets like Japan and Australia. The impact of the clampdown The curbs, though in place for only a few months, left a mark on the industry. Automakers working on new EV launches saw delays creeping in as suppliers struggled to secure enough material. Some dipped into stockpiles, but those reserves were thin. Alternatives from outside China were available, but at a steep cost. For many companies, the episode was a wake-up call that India's electrification roadmap could be derailed by external shocks. (Also read: India's Bajaj Auto flags lower-than-planned EV output on rare earth magnet crunch) What changes now With the ban lifted, sourcing is expected to stabilise and costs may begin to cool in the coming quarters. For EV makers in particular, the move translates into fewer bottlenecks in the supply of motors and related components. However, the larger issue has not gone away. The dependence on a single nation for a key input makes the auto industry of India vulnerable to subsequent disruptions. Relief with a warning The resumption of Chinese exports has relieved near-term anxiety, but the incident served as a wake-up call. Resilience will take more than praying for steady flows of trade. Pundits say that India now needs to ramp up processing of rare earths and diversify supply streams. Automakers' message is unequivocal, relief now is a good thing, but long-term stability will come only from breaking dependence on Beijing.

Akshay Gupta secures podium finish at 6-hour Endurance Race at Nurburgring racetrack in Germany
Indian endurance racer and tech entrepreneur Akshay Gupta returned to the podium in the ADAC Nurburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS) with a 2nd place finish in the VT2-F 4WD class at the KW 6h ADAC Ruhr-Pokal-Rennen, the sixth round of the championship. Akshay Gupta secures podium finish at 6-hour Endurance Race at Nurburgring racetrack in Germany Driving the Hyundai i30N for STENLE Marketing Team Mertens Motorsport alongside German Alex Schneider and Belgian Jarno D'Hauw, Gupta delivered a strong comeback performance in one of the world's toughest endurance series, according to a release from Akshay Gupta Media team. The race weekend faced unusual challenges as heavy morning fog forced organizers to shorten qualifying from 90 minutes to just 40, while the six-hour race itself was reduced to 4 hours 30 minutes. Despite the setbacks, the trio carved their way up the order from 6th on the grid in an 11-car class field. Gupta, who was the only Indian on the grid among 309 drivers from 27 nations, took the race start and immediately climbed into podium contention during his first stint. Belgian teammate D'Hauw pushed the car further to 2nd during a double stint, while Schneider battled through health difficulties and thus couldn't do the complete final stint, and Gupta had to step back in the car for a crucial second stint. Schneider then took over during the final three laps, securing 2nd place. "This result is a much-needed turnaround for us this season," said Gupta, as quoted from a release by Akshay Gupta Media team. "After a series of DNFs and setbacks earlier in the year, standing on the podium again is a huge relief and a big step in boosting the team morale. We basically did 28 qualifying laps. The competition in our class keeps getting tougher and tougher, so, it is getting more rewarding to race here. I absolutely enjoyed every minute of this race," he added. The podium marks Gupta's third major endurance podium of 2025, following successes at the Dubai 24 Hours (TCE class) and the Nurburgring 24 Hours (SP3T class) earlier this year with AsBest Racing.
