Haj Scam: Company Linked To 47 Duped Pilgrims Unlicensed - Mohd Na'im
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said preliminary checks showed that the agent in question was not affiliated with any company officially accredited by Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) or the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Haj and Umrah.
'It is not a PJH company and most likely a travel agent. There is also a possibility that they entered Jeddah illegally to perform the haj using tourist visas or those from other countries, and if that is the case, it would indeed be difficult for us to detect the offence,' he told reporters after visiting and distributing prayer items to the Muslim community at Kampung Orang Asli Bukit Seraya here today.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Media Council (MMC) has reminded journalists to fully adhere to the codes of ethics in journalism and principles of child protection when reporting on the case of Zara Qairina Mahathir. In a statement today, MMM said these ethics and principles include not publishing details that could identify or stigmatise the victim and her family. The council said that responsible reporting should focus on fairness and public interest, not exploitation or profit. 'MMM would like to remind all media organisations and practitioners that children must not be the subject of sensational reporting, excessive interrogation, or exposure that could lead to additional trauma or harm. 'In cases of bullying and inquests involving minors, the dignity, privacy, and safety of the children must always be prioritised, in line with their right to full protection under the Child Act 2001 (Act 611),' the statement read. The council stated that it views the latest developments concerning coverage of the Zara Qairina case seriously, urging the media to adopt greater responsibility in ensuring that their reporting is accurate, ethical, and sensitive. In this regard, MMM urged all media practitioners to carry out their duties with discipline and professionalism, as ethical journalism is the only way to protect vulnerable groups and safeguard the integrity of the profession. Meanwhile, the MMM said it was also concerned over reports from the Sabah Journalists Association (SJA) that unauthorised individuals allegedly harassed journalists during a recent press conference on the Zara Qairina inquest. 'According to SJA, unauthorised individuals entered the media zone, stood too close to female reporters, disrupted coverage, and later profited from unofficial live broadcasts.

Man arrested for spreading fake statements on Zara Qairina case
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested a man for spreading false statements about the investigation into the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir on social media. Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M Kumar said the man, 51, was found to have uploaded a two minute and six second video to a TikTok account on Aug 15 containing the audio conversation of a supposed pathologist who claimed that the death of the student was a premeditated murder. 'A mobile phone believed to have been used in this case was also seized,' he said in a statement here today, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 505(B) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. 'The suspect was arrested at 10.20 pm yesterday and has been remanded for three days starting from today till Aug 21.' He also warned that the police would take stern action against those deliberately spreading rumours or manipulating facts aimed at causing fear or concern among the public or disrupting court proceedings. He also advised the public to not simply believe information on social media without verifying its accuracy and urged all parties to allow the authorities to conduct their investigations professionally. Zara Qairina, 13, died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Sabah on Aug 17 a day after she was found lying unconscious in a drain near her school dormitory. – Bernama

Melaka Urges Utility Companies To Have Complete SOPs, Strict Checks To Deter Untoward Incidents
MELAKA, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- The Melaka government has urged all utlity companies in the state to have complete standard operating procedures (SOP) and strict, consistent checks to prevent any untoward incidents. Its chief minister, Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said any incident carried potentially huge risks that could threaten safety, interrupt business operations and affect power supply to the public. "Melaka is a state that is part of the Peninsular Gas Utilisation (PGU) grid and has the Sungai Udang Regasification Terminal that channels consistent and safe gas supply, not only for the state, but also the northern region and west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. "We cannot turn a blind eye to risks and threats that exist if safety aspects are neglected and we don't want an incident like the gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights, Selangor to happen,' he said when officiating the close of the state level Safety Forum: Public Awareness on Utility Facilities here today, which was attended by utility agencies such as Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Petronas Gas Berhad and Gas Malaysia Distribution Sdn Bhd. The Putra Heights explosion served as an eye-opening lesson that utility facilities were not merely infrastructure, but critical assets that could bring huge risks if not controlled well. As such, the state government has asked the Melaka-level National Security Council to hold engagement sessions with all utility companies and ensure safety advocacy reaches the grassroots level, Ab Rauf said. In a related development, he said that based on TNB records, there were 193 cases of electric meter tampering in Melaka this year compared to 521 cases last year, and seven cases of infrastructure trespass and theft this year compared to three last year. -- BERNAMA
