No need to stay in Maharashtra, UP or Rajasthan, Mamata Banerjee tells migrants
Mamata Banerjee
on Monday assured social security to all migrant workers willing to return to the state. "There's no need to stay in Mumbai, UP or Rajasthan. I may not be able to feed you pitha or payas (Bengali desserts) but, if we eat one roti, we will ensure you get one too.
You can live here in peace," she said.
"You have the police helpline number. Contact us, let us know when you wish to return. We will bring you back by train," she said, ahead of Trinamool's first Bhasha Andolan march in Santiniketan.
The CM said around 22 lakh migrants from Bengal work in other states and promised them ration cards, health cards, and jobs. "We will give you social security and admit your kids to school," she said.
Banerjee told West Bengal Migrant Workers' Welfare Board chairperson Samirul Islam, "Sit with the chief secretary, take Moloy (the state's law and labour minister Moloy Ghatak) with you and formulate a scheme to bring the migrant workers back." The CM's statements came during an administrative meeting at Bolpur's Gitanjali Stadium.
Following the meeting, Banerjee led Bhasha Andolan march which covered a 3-km stretch, from Tourist Lodge crossing to Jamboni bus stand.
Claiming she could lay down her life for Bangla and the Bengali 'asmita', the CM said: "I am not against any language. We want unity. Threatening and harassing people is not our way."
Alleging a bigger game plan Banerjee said, "Assam govt is sending NRC notices to a tribal family in Alipurduar. In Maharashtra, Matuas are being persecuted. I cannot even recognise this country anymore. The country I know sustains all people.
My country keeps everyone happy. If they (BJP-led state govts) continue like this, the country will get fragmented. This is their game plan."
She asked how Bengal residents were being pushed to Bangladesh despite having all relevant documents. "Remember, this is Bengal. It led the country in the freedom struggle, abolished Sati and ensured widow remarriage. Do not test us," Banerjee said, adding: "Those who ask as why Bengalis are working in other states should know that Bengalis get work because of their skills. There are 1.5 crore migrants from other states working here.
We don't misbehave with them. Why should you?"

Assam to launch portal for indigenous people to seek arms licences
Two months after the Assam Cabinet approved a scheme to issue arms licences to 'indigenous people' in parts of the state where their 'population is in the minority,' Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced Wednesday that the government will soon roll out an online portal where eligible people can apply for the licences. When the Cabinet decision was announced in May, Sarma had named districts where Bengali-origin Muslims account for majority, such as Dhubri, Morigaon, Nagaon, Barpeta and South Salmara, and said that 'indigenous people are in minority' in these areas and often 'have to confront the question of their security.' On Wednesday, he announced on social media that the government is in the process of rolling out a dedicated portal where 'indigenous people, who perceive threat to their lives and reside in sensitive areas' can apply for arms licences. He announced three key eligibility criteria for the issue of arms licences under this scheme: that the applicant has to be an 'original inhabitant or indigenous citizen of Assam,' they must 'perceive a genuine threat to life and safety due to the vulnerability of the area of residence,' and that they must 'reside in a vulnerable or remote area, as notified by the District Administration, or assessed as such by authorized security agencies.' He also said the applicantions would be subject to a security assessment, verification and vetting and that once issued, the licences would be subject to periodic review and 'monitoring and reporting.' This portal is likely to be rolled out this month and this comes at a time when vigilantes, particularly those of a group called Bir Lachit Sena, have been issuing ultimatums to Bengali-Muslims living in different parts of Upper Assam in the past few days, giving calls for 'all Bangladeshis to leave Upper Assam within seven days.'

ECI Suspension Of 4 Bengal Officials Triggers Pushback, Mamata Slams Move
Last Updated: The WBCS (Executive) Officers' Association has written to the state chief secretary, requesting his intervention and urging a review of the Election Commission's decision The suspension of four government officers in West Bengal by the Election Commission of India (ECI) has triggered strong reactions from both the WBCS (Executive) Officers' Association and chief minister Mamata Banerjee, deepening tensions between the state administration and the central poll panel. On August 5, the ECI suspended two electoral registration officers (EROs) and two assistant EROs (AEROs) for allegedly facilitating the inclusion of fictitious names in the voter list. According to sources within the Election Commission, the suspended officers allegedly shared confidential email credentials with unauthorised individuals, enabling manipulation of electoral rolls. Following an initial summons by the chief electoral officer in Kolkata, an inquiry reportedly found the officers guilty, and the matter was forwarded to Delhi. The suspensions followed, along with a directive to the chief secretary of West Bengal to initiate FIRs against the accused officers. The suspended officers are: In response, the WBCS (Executive) Officers' Association has written to the chief secretary, requesting his intervention and urging a review of the ECI's decision. The association maintained that the officers acted in good faith under difficult circumstances, and there was no evidence of malicious intent. 'Administrative actions must be fair, proportionate, and considerate of the officers' service records and morale," the letter said. It further added that such punitive measures have 'deeply concerned the officer community" and could negatively impact morale at a time when integrity and neutrality in public service are crucial. If the chief secretary does not act according to the ECI's directive, the poll body can initiate action against him as it has plenary powers under the Constitution. Mamata Banerjee Terms EC 'BJP's Bonded Labour' Chief minister Mamata Banerjee also launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission over the suspensions. Speaking at an internal party meeting, she questioned the legality and timing of the action. 'Government workers are being intimidated. Two officers were served suspension notices yesterday. Have elections even been announced yet? Which law allows them to be suspended at this stage?" she said, accusing the EC of acting on behalf of the ruling BJP at the Centre and union home minister Amit Shah. BJP Defends Suspension In contrast, the BJP has strongly backed the Election Commission, stating that the suspension and planned FIRs send a strong message about electoral integrity. Senior BJP leaders said such strict actions are essential to prevent voter list manipulation and restore public trust in the electoral process. tags : BJP election commission Mamata Banerjee tmc West Bengal view comments Location : Kolkata, India, India First Published: August 07, 2025, 04:54 IST News india ECI Suspension Of 4 Bengal Officials Triggers Pushback, Mamata Slams Move Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. When will you arrest me, when will you shoot?: Didi challenges ‘Malpua'
1 2 Jhargram/Kolkata: Daring BJP to "shoot her", Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday took aim at the party's Bengal minder Amit Malviya for saying that she should be held accountable under NSA "for inciting linguistic conflict". Malviya's comment had come after the CM had criticised Delhi Police for its notice seeking translators for "Bangladeshi national language". "There is one 'Malpua'. He says I should be arrested under the NSA for speaking in favour of Bengali language. If you have the courage, tell me, when will you arrest me and shoot me? Even CPM fired at me. If I could withstand their torture, then I will chase these people away like flies," the CM said at Jhargram after leading a 3-km-long 'Bhasha Andolan' march in Jhargram. Without naming Malviya, the Bengal CM said: "I know of everyone's capabilities. Don't provoke me, else I will dig into history and reveal the names of those who sponsored CBI probes. Do your job properly, show respect and I will respect you." Saying that BJP can't handle the governance of the country, the CM warned that TMC would hold protest marches across the state whenever BJP bigwigs arrive in Bengal. "The day before yesterday, they did a meeting and said they would surely implement SIR. They won't be able to do anything." She went on to add: "They only want their people to benefit and deny others of their due." Banerjee said it was important for voters to understand BJP's "game plan". "BJP has decided to remove names from the voter list to win elections. They are saying that names must be added afresh. This is a BJP conspiracy to bring NRC. They removed the names of 7 lakh Hindu Bengalis in Assam. Now they are sending notices to people in Cooch Behar and Alipurduar. In MP, a tribal woman whose home is in Malda was deported to Bangladesh. Such atrocities by BJP... are you not ashamed," she asked, alleging that BJP was trying to bring in "party list" in the name of voter list.
