Dubai: Woman fined over Dh2 million for stealing from investor
An Asian woman was sentenced by a Dubai misdemeanours court to two years in jail plus a fine of Dh 2.85 million for stealing a large sum of money from an investor. She will also be deported after serving her sentence. Two other defendants of the same nationality were acquitted of involvement.
According to court records, the case dates back to January this year, when an investor reported a theft from his apartment in Deira. The man said he hosted the woman at his home. He told police that the woman had previously worked for one of his companies before leaving the country.
On the day of the crime, the investor accompanied the accused to a money exchange office in Dubai to collect Dh2 million on behalf of a friend who had asked him to purchase a residential unit.
The investor placed the amount, along with additional Dh85,000 in a bag and left it in the living room. The next morning, he discovered the woman and the money were gone.
A police officer involved in the investigation said the woman fled the UAE after handing over the stolen funds to another person for safekeeping. Authorities managed to track down the woman but recovered only Dh1.4 million from the stolen amount.

Dubai Police issue warning after 13 jaywalking and scooter deaths
Dubai Police have issued a warning over the dangers of jaywalking and improper e-scooter use after 13 people lost their lives in the first five months of 2025. Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Acting Assistant Commandant for Operations at Dubai Police, revealed that nine of the fatalities were caused by pedestrians crossing roads at unauthorised points, while four deaths were linked to unsafe scooter usage. Al Mazrouei said: 'These figures reflect the continued presence of dangerous practices that jeopardise lives, whether by ignoring designated pedestrian crossings or riding scooters on inappropriate roads without safety measures like helmets. Dubai Police safety warning 'Additionally, some violations involved scooter use by unqualified individuals or those under the legal age, which increases the risk of accidents.' Dubai Police's General Department of Traffic recorded 28,027 jaywalking violations and confiscated 15,029 scooters between January and May 2025. Offences included riding scooters in non-designated areas, without helmets or safety gear, and by unqualified or underage individuals. Al Mazrouei stressed that such behaviours pose a serious threat not just to offenders, but to all road users. He pointed out that ignoring pedestrian crossings and misusing e-scooters contributes to traffic congestion and tragic accidents. To combat the issue, Dubai Police and the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) have launched joint awareness campaigns aimed at both residents and visitors. These initiatives focus on educating the public about pedestrian safety and the correct, legal use of electric scooters. Community members are urged to use pedestrian bridges and designated crossings and follow official guidelines for e-scooter use. The public is also encouraged to report reckless behaviour through the 'Police Eye' service on the Dubai Police app or via the 'We Are All Police' hotline at 901.

Dubai Police issue safety warning after four scooter riders killed in emirate this year
Dubai Police have called for caution when travelling on scooters or crossing the road after the force announced 13 deaths involving jaywalkers and e-scooter riders in the first five months of 2025. Nine jaywalkers died while crossing roads in non-designated areas and four scooter riders have been killed since January. More than 15,000 e-scooters were confiscated by police in the same period, while more than 28,000 incidents of jaywalking were recorded across the city. 'The force issued 28,027 offences for jaywalkers caught crossing motorways and confiscated 15,029 electric scooters for not following traffic rules,' said Maj Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, acting assistant commander-in-chief for operations at Dubai Police. He said the scooter riders had been stopped after travelling in non-designated lanes, and for not wearing safety vests or helmets. Ministry of Interior figures show Dubai Police issued 35,233 fines for jaywalkers in 2024. Maj Al Mazrouei said this indicated that many people still endanger others by acting recklessly on the roads. 'Jaywalkers and misusing scooters are among the biggest challenges [in terms of road safety], especially in populated areas,' he said. Under-16s are not allowed to use an electric bike or e-scooter on Dubai roads and anyone riding an e-scooter must have a permit from the Road and Transport Authority. 'Traffic safety is a joint responsibility. Breaching traffic laws can cause accidents," said Maj Al Mazrouei. Police said a Dh300 ($80) fine will be imposed on those caught riding dangerously on electric bikes or e-scooters, or travelling on roads reserved for cars with a speed limit exceeding 60kph. In the UAE, jaywalkers can be fined Dh400 and drivers who do not give way to pedestrians at zebra crossings could receive a Dh500 fine and six black points on their licence. Dubai Police urged the public to report offenders by logging on to their app or by calling 901.
