A 32-year-old man died and 95 others were injured during dahi handi celebrations in Mumbai on Saturday, The Hindu reported.
Dahi handi events, part of the Hindu festival of Janmashtami that marks the birth of deity Krishna, involve groups forming human pyramids to break earthen pots filled with curd suspended from a height.
In Mankhurd, Jagmohan Shivkiran Chaudhari fell while tying a dahi handi rope to a window grille on the first floor of his house. He was taken to Shatabdi Hospital in Govandi, where doctors declared him dead in the afternoon.
Of the 95 persons injured in the celebrations in Mumbai, 19 are still admitted to hospital, including two in critical condition, The Hindu quoted the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's data as saying. Seventy-six others have been discharged.
In Thane, 22 persons – including minors – were injured during the festivities, the Hindustan Times quoted Yasin Tadvi, chief of the Disaster Management Cell of the Thane Municipal Corporation as saying.
Some of the injured were children aged between five and ten, the official said.
Tadvi added that the organisers had been issued clear instructions against allowing children below 14 to participate. 'Despite repeated instructions, children below 14 years were found forming pyramids,' India Today quoted Tadvi as saying.
Separately, Rohan Mohan Valvi (14), a member of the Gaondevi Govinda Pathak in Andheri, collapsed while seated in a tempo van during the festivities.
Valvi, who had reportedly recently recovered from jaundice, was taken to two hospitals and declared dead at Rajawadi Hospital, Ghatkopar, at night.

Dharmasthala case: Ananya Bhat's photo released

Mangaluru, Aug 17 (UNI) The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Dharmasthala case has intensified its investigation even as the missing case of Ananya Bhat, filed by her mother Sujatha Bhat, has come into the spotlight. Sujatha Bhat released the passport-size photograph of her daughter, Ananya Bhat, for the first time, following mounting questions about the girl's identity and her disappearance. Until now, despite filing a complaint, Sujatha had not provided any photograph, raising doubts in public and among investigators. According to the complaint, Ananya, a medical college student, had visited the Dharmasthala temple with her friends but never returned. Sujatha, who was then working as a stenographer with the CBI in Kolkata, alleged that when she tried to lodge a missing complaint, she was threatened and turned away. She also claimed that when she raised the matter before the temple administration, she was assaulted by the staff, leaving her in a coma for three months. The controversy deepened after a masked complainant alleged that hundreds of bodies were buried in Dharmasthala. Sujatha submitted that if her daughter's remains were found among those exhumed and her DNA matched, the body should be handed over to her so that Hindu last rites could be performed. The SIT is simultaneously carrying out the exhumation of skeletal remains and examining Sujatha's complaint. Sujatha's lawyer Manjunath urged her to release her daughter's photograph in response to widespread demands on social media. The Ananya Bhat disappearance has now become one of the most debated aspects of the Dharmasthala case, which has already created a nationwide stir. UNI BDN ARN

UP woman accuses brother, his ‘wife' of forcing her to convert, marry elderly man

A 21-year-old woman in Prayagraj has accused her elder brother and his purported wife of pressuring her to convert to another religion and force her into marrying a Kolkata-based elderly man from another community. The accused woman, Rubaiya, was arrested on Saturday and raids were on to trace the complainant's brother who is absconding, police said. In her complaint to police, the woman said her brother Rahul Kushwaha, who has a criminal background and was recently released after serving five years in prison, brought home Rubaiya introducing her to the family as his wife. An FIR has been registered at the Prayagraj Cantonment police station against Rahul and Rubaiya under Sections 298 (injuring or defiling place of worship, with intent to insult the religion of any class), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 351 (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and provisions of the anti-conversion law. According to the police, the complainant alleged that days after his release from prison last year, Rahul brought home Rubaiya, a mother of two children whose husband was lodged in prison. After Rubaiya started living in their house, Rahul prohibited the other family members from offering prayers to Hindu deities at home, the complainant alleged. Also, Rahul and Rubaiya started pressuring to embrace Islam and marry an elderly man from Kolkata, and when she resisted they even threatened to kill her, it was alleged. SK Kannojia, Station House Officer (SHO), Cantonment police station, said they will investigate if a gang or a racket is behind it. 'Rahul already has criminal cases against him,' he confirmed.
