Mumbai: One dead, 95 injured in dahi handi celebrations
A 32-year-old man died and 95 others were injured during dahi handi celebrations in Mumbai on Saturday, The Hindu reported. Dahi handi events, part of the Hindu festival of Janmashtami that marks the birth of deity Krishna, involve groups forming human pyramids to break earthen pots filled with curd suspended from a height. In Mankhurd, Jagmohan Shivkiran Chaudhari fell while tying a dahi handi rope to a window grille on the first floor of his house. He was taken to Shatabdi Hospital in Govandi, where doctors declared him dead in the afternoon. Of the 95 persons injured in the celebrations in Mumbai, 19 are still admitted to hospital, including two in critical condition, The Hindu quoted the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's data as saying. Seventy-six others have been discharged. In Thane, 22 persons – including minors – were injured during the festivities, the Hindustan Times quoted Yasin Tadvi, chief of the Disaster Management Cell of the Thane Municipal Corporation as saying. Some of the injured were children aged between five and ten, the official said. Tadvi added that the organisers had been issued clear instructions against allowing children below 14 to participate. 'Despite repeated instructions, children below 14 years were found forming pyramids,' India Today quoted Tadvi as saying. Separately, Rohan Mohan Valvi (14), a member of the Gaondevi Govinda Pathak in Andheri, collapsed while seated in a tempo van during the festivities. Valvi, who had reportedly recently recovered from jaundice, was taken to two hospitals and declared dead at Rajawadi Hospital, Ghatkopar, at night.

Govandi residents launch one-day hunger strike, rally against civic hospital privatisation
Mumbai: Residents and activists in Mankhurd and Govandi on Monday staged a rally and a one-day hunger strike opposing the privatisation of civic hospitals and demanding immediate staffing and improved services at the Shatabdi Hospital and the Deonar Maternity Hospital. Govandi residents launch one-day hunger strike, rally against civic hospital privatisation The 'Aspatal Bachao, Nijikaran Hatao'(Save hospitals, stop privatisation) Kriti Samiti, a coalition of over 25 organisations, led the rally beginning at the Cheetah Camp Maternity Home, and culminating at the Maharashtra Nagar Maternity Home. Over 100 residents of Govandi joined the march, with more than 20 observing a hunger strike till 3pm, and 250 others showing solidarity by joining the gathering. The Samiti opposed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's plan to partially privatise the 580-bed Shatabdi Hospital and 410-bed Lallubhai Compound Hospital, both located in the under-resourced M-East Ward. Last month the BMC had floated tenders to run these facilities in Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. The Samiti also demanded that the unopened Maharashtra Nagar Maternity Home, built three years ago with public funds, be made operational immediately. Protesters said that the M-East Ward accounted for 16% of the city's maternal death in 2021 despite housing only 6.7% of the population. As per data from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), the M-East ward is one of the poorest areas in the city with the lowest human development index among all wards. The data shows that more than half the children in the ward are malnourished, Tuberculosis (TB) cases have tripled since 2014, and life expectancy stands at just 39 years, far below the city's average of 56.8, said the association. A member of the Samiti, and Mumbai coordinator of Revolutionary workers party of India, Baban Thoke, said that the ward faced a serious shortage of doctors, nurses, and facilities, and often critical patients died on route while being referred to distant hospitals. 'More than half of the women coming to small hospitals like Shahji Nagar and Deonar Maternity are sent directly to Sion or Rajawadi, many in critical conditions. Many patients die in the rush of referrals due to lack of timely treatment.' he added. After the demonstration, the medical officer of health of the ward addressed the gathering and assured them a meeting with senior civic health officials within 10 days. The Samiti's key demands include halting hospital privatisation, filling all vacant posts within 30 days, and restoring Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) and ICUs. Thoke added that one of the aims of the rally was to highlight the condition of the government Maternity Homes in M-East Ward and demand their immediate improvement. 'The ICUs, NICUs are non-operational in many hospitals and maternity homes due to non-appointment of experienced staff. At this juncture the operation of a Maharashtra Nagar Maternity Home is critical to the health of mothers and children in M-East Ward,' said Thoke. The samiti also demanded the cancellation of all plans to implement the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model in any government hospital, including Shatabdi and Lallubhai Compound Hospitals. The BMC did not respond to queries from HT.

Man, 3 kids, on scooter, run over by dumper truck in Deonar
MUMBAI: Four people, including three children, on a scooter were run over by a dumper at Lotus Junction on the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road in Deonar after the scooterist lost control over the two-wheeler while overtaking the dumper. Locals protested at the accident site and outside the police station. Deonar police said the accident took place at around 3.45 pm on Saturday. The deceased are Noor Gulam Nabi Shaikh, 28, a resident of Millat Nagar at Saki Naka, and his nephews – Ayan Qasim Mustaffa Khan, 11, Mohammad Hussain Gulam Ahmed Khan, 13, and Abdul Gani Gulam Ahmed Khan, 11. Police said the four were proceeding on the scooter towards Deonar on Shaikh's scooter when the accident took place. They were rushed to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar and Shatabdi Hospital in Govandi, where they were declared dead. The four were on their way to the Deonar abattoir to buy a goat. The dumper was carrying construction debris. 'We have arrested the dumper driver and will be booking him under section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, for causing death by negligence,' said a police officer from Deonar police station. After the accident, locals gathered at the accident site and shouted slogans against the government, demanding that heavy vehicles ply on flyovers and not on the road under the bridge. Police detained the protestors, who blocked the traffic for around an hour. Biker dies on WEH In a separate incident Ajay Gupta, 28, a resident of Behram Bagh, Jogeshwari, died after a dumper collided with the scooter he was riding on the Western Express Highway, in the south-bound lane. Police said Gupta, who worked as a salesperson, also helped in the family business, selling onions and potatoes. He was transporting onions and potatoes from Mira Road on his scooter when a dumper pulled up behind him, on the highway in Malad East, and rammed his scooter. Gupta died at the accident site. 'We have the dumper but the driver has fled. We will soon identify him,' said a police officer with the Kurar police station.
