
Amritsar hooch tragedy: ‘Kingpin', 9 others arrested, Majitha DSP, SHO suspended for negligence
The Amritsar district administration received information Monday night about the deteriorating health of people from multiple villages in Majitha sub-division of the rural police district. Overall, 31 people who consumed the spurious liquor were admitted in hospital, of which 21 people succumbed.
Majitha Deputy Superintendent of Police Amolak Singh and Station House Officer Sub-Inspector Avtar Singh were suspended for gross negligence and a departmental enquiry initiated against them.
New Delhi: The Punjab Police Tuesday arrested 10 people including the alleged kingpin behind the distribution of spurious liquor that led to the deaths of 21 people in Amritsar district.
Paying a visit to the epicentre of the tragedy, Bhangali village, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said that no one, irrespective of their clout, will be spared because poor people have been killed in the tragedy. He announced Rs 10 lakh ex-gratia for the kin of the victims as well government jobs for family members.
Mann said a police probe has so far revealed that the kingpin had ordered around 600 litres of methanol, adding that the entire supply chain will be established.
Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney said the district's medical team has been going door-to-door to check for symptoms.
'Gross negligence'
The Punjab Police lodged two FIRs under sections 105 and 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Section 61A of the Excise Act and Section 3 of the SC/ST Act at Majitha and Kathunangal police stations in the district.
Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said accused Sahib Singh had been identified as the main supplier of the methanol, along with local distributors and sellers Prabhjit Singh and Kulbir Singh, Ninder Kaur, Gurjant Singh, Arun alias Kala and Sikander Singh alias Pappu.
Two methanol suppliers had also been identified—Pankaj Kumar alias Sahil and Arvind Kumar, owners of Ludhiana-based firm Sahil Chemicals.
Amritsar Rural SSP Maninder Singh said Sahib Singh had ordered methanol via an online platform from Sahil Chemicals, and the substance was further handed over to local distributor Prabhjeet Singh in jerry cans from kingpin Sahib Singh.
SSP Singh further said that another consignment of 600 litres of methanol ordered by Sahib Singh from Delhi had been seized by Patiala district police based on a tip-off.

Centre hands over probe into Suhas Shetty murder to NIA
The Union Home Ministry on Saturday, June 7, handed over the investigation into the murder of 30-year-old Suhas Shetty, a Hindutva activist and accused in two murder cases, to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), considering the 'the gravity of the offence, its national ramifications as well as the need to unearth the larger conspiracy'. It said, 'The Central government has received information regarding registration of FIR no. 0080/2025 dated 01.05.2025 by the Karnataka police at Bajpe police station in Mangaluru city, Karnataka, under sections 189(4), 191(2), 191(3), 126(2), 109, 118(1), 103(1), 61(1), 62, 351(2), 351(3), 190 of the BNS, 2023, and sections 3(1), 25 of the Arms Act, 1959, pertaining to attack on one Suhas Shetty on 01.05.2025 while he was travelling in a car along with a few others, by one Safwan with eight other persons, and the attack resulted in critical injuries to Suhas Shetty and others, and he subsequently succumbed to them in a hospital.' In this case, the Ministry said, sections 10 read with 41, 13, 15, 17, 18, and 20 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, dealing with unlawful associations and terrorist activities, were attracted. The case relates to the targeted killing of an individual in public view with the intention to create terror in the minds of people, and the accused persons involved in the case were allegedly members of the Popular Front of India (PFI), an unlawful association. In view of the circumstances mentioned, the Central government was of the opinion that a scheduled offence under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008, had been committed in the instant case and having regard to the gravity of the offence, its national ramifications as well as the need to unearth the larger conspiracy, it was required to be investigated by the NIA. The Ministry directed the NIA to take up the investigation into the case in exercise of the powers conferred under sub-section (5) of section 6 read with section 8 of the NIA Act. On the night of May 1, Shetty, who was travelling along with his associates, was chased and hacked to death in full public view by a group of people in Bajpe town. The victim was the main accused in the murder of 23-year-old Mohammed Fazil, a resident of Katipalla-Surathkal, who was killed in front of a shop in Surathkal on July 28, 2022. Fazil was murdered two days after the killing of BJP activist Praveen Nettaru at Bellare in Sullia taluk on July 26, 2022. The Bajpe police have so far arrested 11 persons in the Shetty murder case.

362 booked for drunk driving in Cyberabad
A total of 362 individuals were booked by the Cyberabad Police for driving under the influence of alcohol during the weekend. Of the total cases registered, 260 were riders, 24 were three-wheeler drivers, 73 were operating four-wheelers, and five were behind the wheels of heavy vehicles. A majority, 316 individuals, recorded Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) levels between 35 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml. Another 30 were found with levels between 201 mg/100 ml and 300 mg/100 ml, while 16 registered dangerously high levels ranging from 301 mg/100 ml to 500 mg/100 ml. Miyapur booked the highest number of cases, with 64 offenders, followed by Shamshabad with 42 cases, and both Chevella and Shadnagar police stations reported 32 cases each. On the other end, Gachibowli recorded the fewest violations with just five cases, while Raidurgam and Narsingi followed closely with seven and nine cases respectively. All those caught will be produced before the court, said the police. The police warned that driving in an inebriated state is a grave offence. They added that if an intoxicated driver is involved in a fatal accident, then the person will be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, pertaining to culpable homicide not amounting to murder. This section carries a punishment of up to ten years' imprisonment, along with a fine that is determined by the court. The traffic police have appealed to all motorists to act responsibly and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, urging citizens to help maintain public safety on the roads.

Villagers protest death of youth in Nalanda
Patna: An irate mob blocked the road near Ajanta Cinema at Ramchandrapur locality under Laheri police station area in Nalanda on Sunday, following the recovery of the body of a 22-year-old-youth. He was missing from his home since Saturday evening, and his body was recovered later in the night from Shivaji Nagar locality. The family alleged that he was killed by his friends. The youth was working in a paint company in Hyderabad and had recently returned home on May 20, police said. According to the police, the deceased was identified as Deepu Kumar alias Lala, son of Vijay Kumar Sharma, a native of Nischalganj village under Parwalpur police station area. Vijay has been selling sweets in Biharsharif for the past 30 years. Deepu's mother, Manju Devi, said he brought home a cellphone on Saturday evening, which his friends asked him to sell for Rs 5,000. "I refused to accept the phone and asked him to return it. He left but came back shortly. While I was scolding him about the phone, his friends called him outside," she said. Following the postmortem, family members and local residents placed the body on the road near Ajanta Cinema, burning tyres and demanding immediate arrest of Deepu's friends, whom they accused of murder. The protesters alleged that his friends deliberately intoxicated him before killing him. Laheri station house officer (SHO) Ranjit Kumar Rajak said, "Police reached the spot immediately after receiving information about the road blockade. The situation was brought under control after assuring the family of a proper investigation into the matter." He further said that while initial probe suggests a possible drug overdose, the exact cause of death would be determined after the postmortem. "The family maintains that this could be a premeditated incident and demands swift arrest and strict punishment for the culprits. The police are investigating the case from all angles, and further action will be taken based on the family's formal complaint," the SHO added.
