Dive Brief:
Australian drugmaker CSL is separating its vaccine business, Seqirus, into a standalone company as part of a sweeping restructuring across its business that will involve workforce cuts of up to 15%.
CSL said Tuesday that a separated Seqirus, which will be chaired by former unit president Gordon Naylor, 'will allow autonomy to set an independent strategic direction, including capitalizing on potential opportunities that may arise in a highly dynamic vaccines market.' The de-merger is expected to be completed by June next year.
In earnings also released Tuesday, CSL said revenue for its vaccine unit was up 2%, which CEO Paul McKenzie described during a conference call as 'robust result' given lower influenza vaccination rates in the U.S. The lower rates resulted in 'competitive pressure' in the market, he added.
Dive Insight:
Most of CSL's revenue comes from its CSL Behring business, which sells a range of blood disease treatments. Through Seqirus, however, CSL is also known for seasonal influenza vaccines like Afluria and Flucelvax that it sells worldwide.
The company said vaccines contributed $2.2 billion to total revenue of $15.6 billion for the fiscal year ending June 30, which saw a 14% increase in adjusted net profit.
While vaccine revenue was up slightly, CEO McKenzie said during the earnings call that the weak market was 'disappointing.'
'We view the softness in the U.S. seasonal category as highly irrational based on the vaccine risk-reward profiles and the scale of disease burden, which this year reached a 15-year high,' he added.
Vaccines have become a flash point in the U.S. as Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. applies more scrutiny to established shots and policy. Most recently, HHS said it would defund research and development related to messenger RNA-based vaccines, canceling $500 million worth of contracts, including one with CSL Seqirus. In 2022, CSL Seqirus licensed mRNA technology from Arcturus Therapeutics to develop new respiratory vaccines.
Still, McKenzie expressed optimism in the overall stability of the U.S. influenza market.
'We are encouraged by the recent positive universal recommendation by the [Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices], a clear sign that influenza is not going away, and it still has severe impact on public health,' he said.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention currently recommends flu vaccination for all people over the age of 6 years. However, the ACIP panel, newly remade by Kennedy, also recommended for removal of the controversial preservative thimerosal from all flu vaccines. Very few vaccines in the U.S. contain thimerosal, but two multi-dose formulations made by CSL Seqirus do.
The job and spending cuts, along with the separation, are expected to save as much as $550 million over the next three years. CSL said it aims to 'balance the reinvestment of these savings in high priority opportunities.'
CSL also said it would buy back A$750 million, or about $486 million, of shares this financial year.
Shares for CSL fell by over 15% on the Australian stock exchange following announcement of the restructuring.

The threat of additional U.S. tariffs on Australian goods is also a bearish element for the Aussie dollar. A move in the December Aussie dollar futures below chart support at .6436 would give the bears more power and it would also become a selling opportunity. The downside price objective would be .6100, or below. Technical resistance, for which to place a protective buy stop just above, is located at .6581. Here is what the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has said about futures trading (and I agree 100%): Trading commodity futures and options is not for everyone. IT IS A VOLATILE, COMPLEX AND RISKY BUSINESS. Before you invest any money in futures or options contracts, you should consider your financial experience, goals and financial resources, and know how much you can afford to lose above and beyond your initial payment to a broker. You should understand commodity futures and options contracts and your obligations in entering into those contracts. You should understand your exposure to risk and other aspects of trading by thoroughly reviewing the risk disclosure documents your broker is required to give you. Gaza City ground offensive underway, civilians flee Israeli advance

Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Israel's military offensive to take over Gaza City got underway on Thursday, sending thousands of Palestinians fleeing from parts of the city of 1 million, according to local officials. The Israel Defense Forces embarked on the operation after advance troops were able to capture outer areas of the city under the cover of unrelenting airborne attack from airstrikes and artillery fire. Residents of the Zeitoun and Sabra neighbourhoods were on the move to areas in the city's northwest. The overnight escalation came after the military said Wednesday that Israel would "intensify the strikes on Hamas in Gaza City, the political and military stronghold of the terror organization." However, it pledged it would endeavor to avoid civilian casualties by issuing evacuation orders. The offensive by Israel, which has vowed to occupy all of Gaza City as part of a plan to capture the 25% of Gaza it does not already hold, saw U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres intervene, calling for a cease-fire and the unconditional release of hostages. "It is vital to reach immediately a cease-fire in Gaza" in order "to avoid the death and destruction that a military operation against Gaza City would inevitably cause," he said. The World Health Organization warned that the evacuation orders, amid a massive escalation in the level of violence, would only add to already "unbearable pressure" on hospitals by forcing more and more people into ever smaller areas. It said hospitals in Gaza City were already operating at almost three times their capacity as they battled to cope with a relentless stream of casualties with "complex trauma wounds." The offensive came despite a new cease-fire and a hostage-prisoner swap deal negotiated by Egypt and Qatar that Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups have accepted, rising domestic opposition to the war and a deepening rift with Western allies, particularly Australia, poised to recognize Palestinian statehood. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu launched a scathing attack on his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albanese, after far-right Israeli politician Simcha Rothman was banned from entering the country for a scheduled speaking tour of Sydney and Melbourne this week. Netanyahu doubled up attacks leveled at Albanese earlier in the week, telling Australian TV news channel Thursday that Albanese's reputation was "forever tarnished by the weakness that he showed in the face of these Hamas terrorist monsters." Jerusalem retaliated by announcing it would cancel the visas of Australian representatives to the Palestinian Authority. Earlier, in an online post on Tuesday, Netanyahu claimed history would judge Albanese harshly. "History will remember Albanese for what he is: A weak politician who betrayed Israel and abandoned Australia's Jews," he wrote. Copyright 2025 UPI News Corporation. All Rights Reserved.

Quantum Computing News: SoftBank Invests $2B in Intel, Microsoft Plans Quantum-Safe Future, Research Team Advances Quantum Portfolio Tools

Welcome to another weekly update on quantum computing. The sector continues to advance, with notable progress in finance, security, and hardware research. SoftBank Group (SFTBY) made a major investment in Intel (INTC), Microsoft (MSFT) outlined its quantum-safe roadmap, and a team in Sydney showed a new way to shrink qubit use. Each step adds to the picture of how quantum could change both tech and markets in the years ahead. Elevate Your Investing Strategy: Take advantage of TipRanks Premium at 50% off! SoftBank Group Invests $2 Billion in Intel We start with SoftBank Group (SFTBY), which has agreed to put $2 billion into Intel (INTC) at $23 per share. The deal adds to a long tie between the two firms and supports Intel's work in U.S. chip design and supply. SoftBank also holds stakes in Arm (ARM) and a wide range of AI and telecom assets, so this move fits its plan to back core tech. Intel says the cash will fund work in cloud, network, and device chips. Quantum Finance: Portfolios on 100 Qubits Next, we look at finance use cases. A research team referred to as Gabriele and colleagues tested quantum methods to build better portfolios. They used a model that looks at Conditional Value at Risk, which tracks deep losses rather than just averages. It's a quantum computing system running on IBM (IBM) hardware with more than 100 qubits, which showed results with a 0.49% error, far lower than classic tools. By mixing quantum circuits with local search, the study found faster and more accurate results. The work suggests that quantum could one day cut the time to build complex funds and handle more assets. Microsoft Builds Quantum-Safe Systems Moving on to Microsoft (MSFT), which outlined its Quantum Safe Program. The plan sets a timeline for moving its full stack to post-quantum cryptography by 2033, with first steps in 2029. The effort covers its cloud, Windows, and AI tools. It also works with U.S. and global groups on standards. Microsoft has already built support for new cryptographic codes into its SymCrypt library, which feeds Windows and Azure. The company says it wants its own systems and those of its partners to be ready for the shift before large-scale quantum machines arrive. Logic Gates on One Ion We finish with researchers at the University of Sydney and Q-CTRL, an Australian quantum computing company, who introduced a new way to cut qubit needs. They built a universal logic gate using two logical qubits stored in one trapped ion. The method uses the GKP error-correcting code and reduces the number of physical qubits needed. The team said this marks the first time such gates have worked in practice with this scheme. The work, published in Nature Physics, could make future hardware more efficient by lowering the overhead of error correction. We used the TipRanks' Comparison Tool to line up some of the top quantum stocks and other tickers mentioned in this piece.
