Daniel O'Donnell taking break from touring due to 'health challenges'

RTÉ News15-05-2025

Daniel O'Donnell has announced he is taking an extended break from his busy entertainment career due to "health challenges".
A spokesperson for the 63-year-old Co Donegal star said in a statement: "After much reflection, Daniel has decided to take an extended break from touring.
"This decision was not made lightly, but it is driven by the health challenges he has faced over the past few years, particularly with allergies and recurrent chest infections while touring extensively."
The spokesperson said Mr O'Donnell will continue his touring commitments until December 2025, but he has realised that he needs to step back and focus on his health and well-being.
The spokesperson added: "This pause is essential for him to recharge and recover. He emphasises that 'this is not a retirement but rather a temporary break'."
Early next year, the singer will host his annual Opry le Daniel shows on TG4.
Additionally, in September 2026, he will perform, as he has for many years, on Gertrude Byrne's Mediterranean Cruise. These will be his only confirmed performances for the year.
Mr O'Donnell and wife Majella now have four grandchildren.
The latest grandchild, Jack, was born last month in Australia while Majella's daughter Siobhan and her husband Gavin also have Archie, Olivia and Luke.
The star has already taken a number of such breaks over the years saying he wanted to take time out to spend it with his family.
In 2014, he announced he would be taking a break from touring for personal reasons.
The decision came after his wife Majella underwent successful treatment for breast cancer.
In 2012, the singer marked 30 years in the music industry but then announced that he was cutting back on his touring commitments and schedule.
A number of years earlier in 1992, he took a number of months off after admitting he faced physical and mental exhaustion due to his demanding schedule.

Kneecap scoops Spirit of the Festival honour at the Celtic Media Awards

Kneecap have won the top prize at this year's Celtic Media Awards. The Belfast rappers were awarded the Spirit of the Festival for their film in Cornwall. The Spirit of the Festival is a three-day celebration of film, television, radio and digital media, which promotes languages and cultures of the Celtic nations and regions. Directed by Rich Peppiatt, Kneecap is set in west Belfast in 2019 and tells the story of how the group, consisting of Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí, formed and went on to "change the sound of Irish music forever". It also stars Oscar-nominated actor Michael Fassbender, Simone Kirby, Jessica Reynolds and Fionnuala Flaherty. TG4 is the broadcast partner for Kneecap, and the channel's Commissioning Editor, Proinsias Ní Ghráinne, said that this honour follows "a year and a half of incredible success for Kneecap" since the film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2024, where it won the coveted Audience Award. "Kneecap has brought the Irish language to the most important stages of the world as a powerful creative channel that speaks to indigenous cultures, music lovers and anyone who appreciates good storytelling," Ní Ghráinne said. "TG4's commitment to support this wave of excellence in both scripted and non-scripted content is unwavering. It is particularly rewarding to see our content stand up to competition from the best of the best from the Celtic Nations. Comhghairdeas Kneecap." It comes after Kneecap member Liam Og O hAnnaidh who performs as Mo Chara, was charged by Metropolitan Police with a terror offence after he allegedly displayed a Hezbollah flag at a gig last November.
