Underage Soccer camp Banteer's Underage Soccer camp takes place on 23rd 24th and 25th July – more info next week. Defeat for Cork in Munster Minor final Friday 23rd May 2025 will be forever remembered as a historical day in our small little GAA Club's history with football player to hone his skills in Banteer Community Sportsfield to line out as a starter in a televised Inter County Munster Minor Championship Final. This game had the added status of being televised live on TG4 which had a viewership on the night of over 600,000 people which is an impressive statistic. Eoin Looney lined out in the number five jersey at right wing back and in his first start of the season he made some excellent contributions. To ensure no parochial bias is in this article, the respected Sports Journalist John O Dowd, from Kerry I may add, stated in his Irish Examiner column last Saturday the 'Magnificent block by Cork Wing Back Eoin Looney prevented Gearóid White from netting' a goal. Eoin could have marked his man and left the future Kerry Senior Gearóid White get a goal but Eoin's selflessness, 'we not me' mind set and bravery were illustrated in this block that had jaws dropping and many spectators clapping from the thousands in attendance with TG4 commentator's Declan Quill and Paddy Kelly praising Eoin's bravery and determination. That is two men with senior All Ireland medals being impressed by young Looney. Micheál Ó Domhnaill, who has strong links to a Banteer Resident, also highlighted this in his half time analysis. The result was not to be with Corks 11 wides to Kerry's six proving costly and the sending off will likely be reviewed thanks to camera footage being available but cannot be commented on here. Kerry ran out eventual winners as a lack of composure in the final third of the field proved Cork's downfall along with butchered goal chances in the opening half combined with a point blank save by the Kerry keeper. Many fires were put out all over the field by a resolute Cork defence but Kevin Griffin from the home of football in South Kerry (St Michaels Foilmore) had an outstanding game. Cork now face Tyrone on weekend of June 7th /8th in what is likely to be a double header in the midlands. The club are extremely proud of Eoin (and Billy) Lonney who were both part of the 30 man panel that travelled to Austin Stack Park. Further details to follow on the All Ireland Quarter Final next week. Banteer Lyre GAA Club would like to congratulate Banteer Soccer Club on their promotion from the Murphys Stout Division 1 League. Banteer now move up to the 2nd highest grade of Murphy Stout sponsored AUL soccer league and plans will be hatched for pre season due to the step up in quality. Congratulations on an unbeaten 14 match run in a season that stretches back to the tail end of summer 2024 since the league started almost 9 to 10 months ago which has already seen Cup success in Cobh earlier in the season. The elongated season can finish in further silverware with another knockout cup competition still up for grabs. Best of luck to all involved and in the new season ahead.
