Disgraced hurler DJ Carey absent as Kilkenny's Jubilee team are honoured on All-Ireland final day

Carey was man-of-the-match in his side's All-Ireland final win over Offaly in 2000 having given yet another scintillating scoring display, but he has been in the news for all the wrong reasons in recent weeks and months.
Carey pleaded guilty on July 3 to ten counts of defrauding a number of people out of money while pretending that he had cancer and needed finances to obtain treatment.
There was some debate whether the five-time All-Ireland SHC winner would be in attendance at Croke Park today but the 54-year-old was not present, although there was a short citation read out about him while his team-mates were celebrated in front of a large crowd at GAA HQ.
There was some jeering when his name was read out by master of ceremonies, TG4 commentator Mac Dara Mac Donncha, but Carey was not the only one absent with All-Ireland-winning manager Brian Cody also missing out due to a pre-planned holiday.
Goalkeeper James McGarry, Cody's right-hand man as coach for several of his All-Ireland successes following retirement, was also absent but captain Willie O'Connor and Irish Independent columnist Eddie Brennan were among the star-studded squad on show.

Mallon goal helps Galway shake off Tipperary and return to All-Ireland camogie final

The 42 Updated at 19.49 Galway 1-18 Tipperary 1-11 A BRILLIANT goal in the 39th minute by Niamh Mallon was the key score as Galway returned to the Glen Dimplex All-Ireland senior camogie final with a deserved victory over Tipperary. The westerners were the better side, but they certainly did not have things their own way. Tipp fought right to the end, and it took a sensational block by the outstanding Dervla Higgins to deny Jean Kelly a goal that might have made it nervy. But there was no questioning the merit of Galway's win, Higgins, Shauna Healy and Róisín Black forming a most obdurate full-back line that provided the platform for the triumph. Up front, Mallon's goal might have earned the plaudits, but Ailish O'Reilly, who is in pursuit of a fourth All-Ireland medal, contributed four points as well as drilling a wonderful pass to Mallon for the definitive major. It was a strange sort of a game, and when Mallon pointed off the stick via Laura Leenane's hurley in the 25th minute, Galway seemed to be moving inexorably towards a Croke Park return. They were 0-8 to 0-2 in front, full value for that, and there seemed a real danger of the game drifting to an inevitable conclusion. Neither side had excelled, and even with their eight points, Galway shot some poor wides, but Tipp were particularly disjointed and wasteful from the few good positions they had created. When they lost Karin Blair with what looked like symptoms of concussion at the end of the first quarter, it only added to the sense of doom. But a shot by Karen Kennedy in the 26th minute was mis-controlled uncharacteristically into the net by Sarah Healy. The leaders were suddenly shaken, and the Premier were shaken from their torpor. The result was that somehow, they went in level at the break, 0-9 to 1-6 and all the momentum with Denis Kelly's side. Casey Heffernan and Eimear Heffernan pointed, and Grace O'Brien brought her tally to four from placed balls. Advertisement The interval probably came at the wrong time for them, while Cathal Murray welcomed the opportunity to recalibrate. All the evidence after the resumption was that the Galway players had recovered their composure, but Tipp would thankfully not return to their early ineptitude. But once O'Reilly placed Mallon, who carried to the edge of the square before firing a rocket to the far corner of the Tipp net, the Tribeswomen were able to keep their valiant opponents at arm's length. Kelly followed a pointed free by O'Brien with a smart score to keep Tipp interested. Mairéad Dillon added to her first-half brace, however, and was promptly hauled ashore, Sabina Rabbitte having been stripped and ready to go, and the Athenry attacker justified the decision by splitting the posts within seconds. There would be no way back for Tipp from there. TikToker has injury award raised after video of him dancing disregarded over lack of evidence

Appeal court cited lack of evidence as to when footage was shot TikTok influencer Mario Pompa (37) successfully sued Hilton Foods (Ireland) Ltd in Dundalk Circuit Court in February this year. Mr Pompa claimed he had to stop working in 2022 due to an ongoing neck, back and shoulder injury he sustained after regularly carrying bags weighing up to 25kg. He alleged the injuries happened during 13-hour shifts in the company's spice room, where spices are mixed for sausage production. Former meat-factory worker Mario Pompa sued his employers Hilton Foods (Ireland) Ltd over a shoulder tear sustained while carrying heavy loads He was awarded a total of €17,958 including €11,000 for his shoulder, €5,000 for the neck and back pain, and €1,958 in special damages. Hilton Foods, which was insured by Aviva, subsequently appealed the decision. While the defendant accepted liability, it was argued that Mr Pompa was exaggerating his injuries. Clips of the plaintiff posted on his TikTok account showed him using a SkiErg machine, weightlifting and doing assisted chin-ups at a gym in September 2021 – a month before he told a GP from the Injuries Resolution Board that he hadn't been able to go to a gym since 2020 – were previously shown to the court. 'In the absence of evidence as to when these videos were made, I must disregard the videos,' she told the appeals court sitting in Dublin. Regarding discrepancies in some of Mr Pompa's evidence, Ms Justice Phelan noted how English is not his first language as he is originally from Slovakia. She said his 'thought process was a little delayed by reason of this' and it was 'not surprising' that after five years he did not remember exactly what he had told his GP. Ms Justice Phelan said she could not penalise him for the lack of detail in the medical reports about him going to the gym because none of the doctors were called to give evidence. Read more Therefore, the judge was not able to ascertain what questions were asked during the consultations. 'I am satisfied that having observed him, heard his evidence and looked at the medical reports, that he did not exaggerate his symptoms or the severity of his injuries,' she said. An MRI scan had shown he had suffered a deep tear in his shoulder, which she was satisfied was caused by his work at Hilton Foods. While she considered the injuries to be in the minor range, she said she had to depart from the personal injury guidelines because she did not believe his injury made a substantial recovery within two years. 'The minor range does not provide for substantial resolution outside of two years,' she said. Mr Pompa was awarded a total of €18,250 including €14,000 for his shoulder injury, €2,500 for his neck, back and arm complaints, and €1,750 in special damages.
