Time of India5 days ago
NEW DELHI: Heavy rains and strong winds continued to lash parts of Kerala on Sunday, forcing authorities to open dam shutters and issue flood alerts across multiple districts.
Rising river levels, uprooted trees, and power outages were reported in several areas.
In Wayanad district, officials opened the shutters of the Banasura Sagar dam by 85 cm to release approximately 100 cusecs of water following intense rainfall in the catchment area, according to news agency PTI.
Residents living downstream were advised to remain vigilant.
In neighbouring Pathanamthitta district, all three shutters of the Moozhiyar reservoir were opened after water levels crossed the red alert mark of 190 metres.
The Irrigation Design and Research Board (IDRB) issued flood warnings for multiple rivers across Kerala, including:
Manimala, Pamba, Achankovil (Pathanamthitta)
Muvattupuzha, Kaliyar, Periyar (Ernakulam)
Pallikkal (Kollam)
Vamanapuram (Thiruvananthapuram)
Bharathappuzha, Chalakudy (Thrissur)
Thodupuzha (Idukki)
Bhavani (Palakkad)
Korappuzha (Kozhikode)
Valapattanam (Kannur)
Kabani (Wayanad)
Authorities have urged people living near riverbanks and in low-lying areas to prepare for possible evacuations.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for nine districts, indicating the likelihood of heavy rainfall ranging between 6 cm and 11 cm in a 24-hour period.

The downpour, which began on Friday and intensified on Saturday, led to severe traffic congestion and disrupted daily life.
Areas including Edappally Toll, Panampilly Nagar, Kathrikadavu, and MG Road were submerged. Businesses in the city centre reported water damage, with some shopkeepers forced to manually drain their premises.
'This is the worst waterlogging we've seen this monsoon,' said Manoj Panakkal, a shop owner at Padma Junction.
'We were hoping that the canal rejuvenation work under Operation Breakthrough would help. But Saturday's high tide and rain overwhelmed the system.'
Officials face criticism
Local opposition leaders criticised the city administration over delays in implementing flood mitigation projects.
'Despite Rs 10 crore being allocated, the dredging of the Thevara–Perandoor canal has not been completed,' said Antony Kureethara, leader of the opposition in the municipal corporation. MG Aristotle, parliamentary party secretary of the UDF, added that canal rehabilitation work remained on paper, with no progress on land acquisition or removal of encroachments.
With more rainfall expected in the coming days, state and district authorities remain on high alert.

India vs England 5th Test: Overcast sky, green pitch, moving ball - welcome to England, Day 1

The Oval cricket ground (AP Photo) in London: Overcast sky, green pitch, rain interruptions, enough for the bowlers all day, and hard work for the batters. Day 1 of the fifth England-India Test at The Oval had a very English look and feel to it. Even after 20 days of hard-fought cricket, that feeling was missing, and the opening day in London gave plenty of it. The beer taps continued to flow in the stands, but for a change, thanks to the weather, even the espresso machines had some decent queues when play got underway. The spectators had plenty of options to enjoy their cricket, but for the ones in the middle, patience was going to be their only companion. From the time Ollie Pope asked India to bat in those challenging conditions, it was clear that this was going to be the sternest examination of the batters in the series so far. This was the spiciest pitch of the tour, and it lived up to its billing with the assistance it provided to the quicks. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! There was activity in the air, movement off the pitch, and the odd one kicked off the surface. 204/6 has left the day slightly in England's favour, with Karun Nair and Washington Sundar being the last recognised pair, but it could have been much worse had the bowlers used the conditions better. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pensioners Can Buy These Electric Cars in Malaysia - See Prices Here! It wasn't easy to deal with the moving Dukes, and rain interruptions only made life more difficult for the batters. Two, read KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel, were guilty of throwing it away, one, read Shubman Gill, misjudged a run, and the remaining three got out to very good deliveries. Those three good deliveries were always going to come their way in these conditions, but it was the previous bunch of three which could have been avoided. England did release the steam when Karun Nair did the repair job, first with Dhruv Jurel and then with Sundar, but it could have been a much worse day for the hosts had those three dismissals not happened. India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate summed up the day as "fair" and felt if they can stretch to 300, it will be a job well done by the batters. He lauded Sai Sudharsan for his patient knock before getting dismissed by a Josh Tongue peach! "It's a fair day. If we can push to 300, it will be a great score. Guys by and large did very well today. Sai Sudharsan played very nicely… two very good balls by Tongue," said ten Doeschate during the media interaction. Ryan ten Doeschate press conference: On Jasprit Bumrah missing out, Shubman Gill run out, batting The coach felt Gill's run-out was a misjudgment from the skipper. "He is in the touch of his life; he made batting look easy today. England bowled very nicely today, and we spoke about accumulating runs during the break. Guys did a nice job accumulating runs, but it was a misjudgment of the run," added ten Doeschate. It was a bizarre day of play that had everything: a bowler sprayed all over but bowled two unplayable deliveries; a player who was not sure of playing in this game scored a fighting unbeaten fifty; and a series that was played on very batting-friendly surfaces dished out the spiciest track—for the game in which both Jasprit Bumrah and Jofra Archer didn't feature in the Playing XI. When Nair and Sundar come out to bat on the second day, they will be carrying the familiar feeling of not feeling set, no matter what score you are batting on. English conditions for you! Assam govt to decide on drought declaration after Aug 15: Himanta

1 2 Guwahati: The state govt will take a decision after Aug 15 whether to declare a drought-like situation in Assam, as the Indian Meteorological Department predicted a good amount of rainfall in the first fortnight of Aug, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday. While addressing a press conference on Thursday, the chief minister said, "IMD said that the situation is changing fast, and they have predicted a good amount of rainfall from Friday until Aug 10. So, we will wait until Aug 15, and after assessing the situation, a final decision regarding declaring a drought-like situation will be taken." He further added that the state govt would need to submit satellite data along with IMD data to the central govt if a drought-like situation is declared anywhere. According to the IMD, Assam received a total of 506.6mm of rainfall, which is a 40% deficit, from June 1 to July 31 this year. During this period, the normal rainfall is 850.4mm. The rainfall deficit during this period is 44% in Arunachal Pradesh, 56% in Meghalaya, 18% in Manipur, 5% in Mizoram, and 1% in Tripura. In Assam, Bajali, Barpeta, Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Charaideo, Darrang, Dhemaji, and Dhubri districts recorded over a 60% deficit in rainfall, which is categorised as 'large deficit rainfall'. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is this legal? On Tuesday, in view of the emerging risk of drought-like conditions reported from certain districts due to the rainfall deficit, chief secretary Ravi Kota, through an order, directed the district commissioners (DCs), where there is a rainfall deficit or early signs of drought, to immediately hold coordination meetings with line departments — agriculture, irrigation, animal husbandry and veterinary — to implement measures with immediate effect. The chief secretary also asked all DCs to intensify awareness and enrolment under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), especially in drought-prone areas. "Insurance companies should be pursued to open special counters at district and block levels for quick enrolment. Farmers shall be encouraged to enrol in PMFBY as the deadline is extended for Sali Paddy up to Aug 20, 2025," the Assam chief secretary said in the order issued on Tuesday. "All DCs shall urgently assess the functionality of irrigation schemes in affected areas and ensure restoration wherever required. Departments concerned shall deploy resources to activate pump sets, minor irrigation channels, and utilise other water sources for supplemental irrigation," the order stated. Regarding seed availability, the chief secretary directed the agriculture department to ensure an adequate stock of Bina 10, Bina 11, or any other suitable short-duration paddy varieties for immediate supply to farmers. The agriculture department was directed to prepare seed distribution plans, prioritising areas with the highest rainfall deficit.
