Flood threat looms in Kerala: Rivers overflow, dams opened; IMD issues warning
Rising river levels, uprooted trees, and power outages were reported in several areas.
In Wayanad district, officials opened the shutters of the Banasura Sagar dam by 85 cm to release approximately 100 cusecs of water following intense rainfall in the catchment area, according to news agency PTI.
Residents living downstream were advised to remain vigilant.
In neighbouring Pathanamthitta district, all three shutters of the Moozhiyar reservoir were opened after water levels crossed the red alert mark of 190 metres.
The Irrigation Design and Research Board (IDRB) issued flood warnings for multiple rivers across Kerala, including:
Manimala, Pamba, Achankovil (Pathanamthitta)
Muvattupuzha, Kaliyar, Periyar (Ernakulam)
Pallikkal (Kollam)
Vamanapuram (Thiruvananthapuram)
Bharathappuzha, Chalakudy (Thrissur)
Thodupuzha (Idukki)
Bhavani (Palakkad)
Korappuzha (Kozhikode)
Valapattanam (Kannur)
Kabani (Wayanad)
Authorities have urged people living near riverbanks and in low-lying areas to prepare for possible evacuations.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for nine districts, indicating the likelihood of heavy rainfall ranging between 6 cm and 11 cm in a 24-hour period.

Ernakulam city experienced its worst waterlogging of the monsoon season so far, with widespread flooding across major roads and residential areas.

The downpour, which began on Friday and intensified on Saturday, led to severe traffic congestion and disrupted daily life.
Areas including Edappally Toll, Panampilly Nagar, Kathrikadavu, and MG Road were submerged. Businesses in the city centre reported water damage, with some shopkeepers forced to manually drain their premises.
'This is the worst waterlogging we've seen this monsoon,' said Manoj Panakkal, a shop owner at Padma Junction.
'We were hoping that the canal rejuvenation work under Operation Breakthrough would help. But Saturday's high tide and rain overwhelmed the system.'
Officials face criticism
Local opposition leaders criticised the city administration over delays in implementing flood mitigation projects.
'Despite Rs 10 crore being allocated, the dredging of the Thevara–Perandoor canal has not been completed,' said Antony Kureethara, leader of the opposition in the municipal corporation. MG Aristotle, parliamentary party secretary of the UDF, added that canal rehabilitation work remained on paper, with no progress on land acquisition or removal of encroachments.
With more rainfall expected in the coming days, state and district authorities remain on high alert.

New Delhi, Aug 1 (PTI) Delhi on Friday witnessed a humid morning with an overcast sky, the India Meteorological Department said while predicting rain accompanied by thunderstorms later in the day. The Safdarjung observatory, which serves as the city's base station, recorded a minimum temperature of 24 degrees Celsius, three notches below normal, the IMD said. The maximum temperature is expected to settle around 34 degrees Celsius. Relative humidity at 8.30 am was 91 per cent, according to IMD's morning bulletin. Among other stations, Palam recorded 23.8 degrees Celsius minimum temperature and received 79.2 mm of rainfall. Ridge recorded 24.8 degrees Celsius and 34.7 mm of rain, while Ayanagar logged 25.7 degrees Celsius along with 51.5 mm Lodi Road reported 24.3 degrees Celsius and 9.5 mm, it said. As per CPCB, an AQI between 0 and 50 is considered 'good", 51 to 100 'satisfactory", 101 to 200 'moderate", 201 to 300 'poor", 301 to 400 'very poor", and 401 to 500 'severe". Assam govt to decide on drought declaration after Aug 15: Himanta
1 2 Guwahati: The state govt will take a decision after Aug 15 whether to declare a drought-like situation in Assam, as the Indian Meteorological Department predicted a good amount of rainfall in the first fortnight of Aug, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday. While addressing a press conference on Thursday, the chief minister said, "IMD said that the situation is changing fast, and they have predicted a good amount of rainfall from Friday until Aug 10. So, we will wait until Aug 15, and after assessing the situation, a final decision regarding declaring a drought-like situation will be taken." He further added that the state govt would need to submit satellite data along with IMD data to the central govt if a drought-like situation is declared anywhere. According to the IMD, Assam received a total of 506.6mm of rainfall, which is a 40% deficit, from June 1 to July 31 this year. During this period, the normal rainfall is 850.4mm. The rainfall deficit during this period is 44% in Arunachal Pradesh, 56% in Meghalaya, 18% in Manipur, 5% in Mizoram, and 1% in Tripura. On Tuesday, in view of the emerging risk of drought-like conditions reported from certain districts due to the rainfall deficit, chief secretary Ravi Kota, through an order, directed the district commissioners (DCs), where there is a rainfall deficit or early signs of drought, to immediately hold coordination meetings with line departments — agriculture, irrigation, animal husbandry and veterinary — to implement measures with immediate effect. The chief secretary also asked all DCs to intensify awareness and enrolment under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), especially in drought-prone areas. "Insurance companies should be pursued to open special counters at district and block levels for quick enrolment. Farmers shall be encouraged to enrol in PMFBY as the deadline is extended for Sali Paddy up to Aug 20, 2025," the Assam chief secretary said in the order issued on Tuesday. "All DCs shall urgently assess the functionality of irrigation schemes in affected areas and ensure restoration wherever required. Departments concerned shall deploy resources to activate pump sets, minor irrigation channels, and utilise other water sources for supplemental irrigation," the order stated. Regarding seed availability, the chief secretary directed the agriculture department to ensure an adequate stock of Bina 10, Bina 11, or any other suitable short-duration paddy varieties for immediate supply to farmers. The agriculture department was directed to prepare seed distribution plans, prioritising areas with the highest rainfall deficit.
