A young Canes player drawing raves. And why players excited about new coordinator

Miami Herald03-04-2025
A six-pack of Miami Hurricanes notes on a Thursday:
▪ UM players like the approach of new coordinator Corey Hetherman, because of the freedom his defense gives them.
'I love this defense,' defensive lineman Akheem Mesidor said Thursday. 'It's simple. I get to play inside and out [at tackle and end]. I'm so happy. I love it. It's like waking up in the morning to your mom making French Toast.
'You get freedom. I have a bunch of freedom inside and out. It allows me to play, allows me to rush the quarterback, to do what I'm good at.'
Mesidor said 'the defense is pretty simple. Everything changes based on formations and shifts. It's really just communication. We're communicating a lot better. We basically run through plays every single day. Guys are starting to play together [on a string] a little bit more.'
Defensive end Rueben Bain explained the upshot of Hetherman's defense this way: 'Everybody is gaining confidence in the scheme so we can make checks without even having to look at the DC. We can just run it.
'He gives us the call and we run it. With that, we are going to play a little faster because we have the confidence that we need and are playing free.'
Hetherman, who replaced the ousted Lance Guidry, had one of the nation's highest-ranked defenses at Minnesota last season.
In a conversation with Canes radio analyst Don Bailey Jr., offensive line coach Alex Mirabal had an interesting description of Hetherman:
'Meat and potatoes, tough, teacher, holds them accountable. is on our best players more than he is [others]. He holds our best players to the highest of standards. He's a no frills kind of guy. line up and I've got to beat you in my base.I've got to beat you in vanilla and chocolate before I put sprinkles on it.
'They're making it hard on us on our offense. They're playing tight coverage in the back end. He fits in really well with coach [Mario] Cristobal's personality and the personality of our offense.'
▪ Players are raving about freshman edge player Hayden Lowe, the former Los Angeles area prep star who was rated the second best edge player and 16th best prospect by 247 Sports. Lowe picked UM over Alabama, Notre Dame, Oregon, Michigan, Texas and others.
'He's violent and has a high motor and he's physical,' Mesidor said. 'He's a huge specimen, strong, ripped, tall. But effort and motor is what makes him stand out.'
Bain says Lowe has 'got an amazing motor. He plays with a lot of enthusiasm, a lot of tenacity. He's always around the ball, he's always making plays. He's going to be a great player.'
Freshmen defensive tackle Donta Simpson, the three-star prospect from Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna, is 'a real nasty run stopper,' Bain said. 'To be a young guy that size who moves how he moves, that's a real blessing. He's been real aggressive past 10, 11 practices.'
▪ WQAM's Bailey, who has watched practices, said Miami 'really hit a home run' with TCU transfer center James Brockermeyer…
He said tight end Elija Lofton has taken another step 'and they've got to manufacture ways to get him the ball. Lofton is so powerful, well conditioned and strong. Who's going to cover him?'...
He said former UM assistant Marc Trestman was at practice Tuesday and told Bailey that the wide receiver group looks 'special.'..
Bailey said running back Jordan Lyle has had a 'very good spring. Made some good runs. Has speed and power. He's a different guy than a year ago. I expect him to have a 100 yards season.'
▪ Quick stuff part 1: Freshman receiver Joshua Moore had a leaping catch during the portion of practice open to reporters... Cornerback Xavier Lucas, the Wisconsin transfer, had an interception and continues a very strong spring.. Receiver Jojo Trader had another good day; he's positioned to be a starter...
Defensive end/edge player Armondo Blount continues to turn heads. 'He's savage; he's going to do a lot for us,' Mesidor said. Bain said Blount is 'always popping up on film for the right violence, the right steps.'
▪ Quick stuff part 2: Mirabal calls guard Anez Cooper 'the heart and spirit of our offense. He's having a phenomenal spring camp; I'd put it up there with anyone on the team.'...
Bain, on former Canes player Damione Lewis, who is coaching the defensive linemen with Jason Taylor: 'He's working with the tackles. He's a little more energetic than JT, a little more outspoken. He'll say what he wants to say, doesn't care how you feel, but it's [done] in a positive direction.'

Why Cecilia Zandalasini has been Valkyries' X-factor in postseason pursuit

WASHINGTON — Ever since Kayla Thornton suffered a season-ending knee injury in mid-July, the Golden State Valkyries have sought to replace her scoring. Over the past three games as the starting small forward, Zandalasini has averaged 12.7 points, third on the team behind season-long starters Janelle Salaün and Tiffany Hayes. In those games, Zandalasini is shooting 44.8% and leading the team with 2.7 made 3-pointers per game. In the team's past three wins, she's averaging 16.3 points and hitting 52.6% from deep. In the past two victories alone, she has gone 7-for-14 from beyond the arc. Zandalasini's game-winner in Atlanta on July 29 gave the Valkyries a needed lift after starting a five-game road trip with a 31-point loss to Connecticut. In another critical contest on Saturday, she scored 14 points in a win over Los Angeles. On Monday against the Sun, Zandalasini tallied 17 points, one off her career high. 'When she was available in the expansion draft, I jumped for joy. You don't understand how excited I was to get Cecilia,' head coach Natalie Nakase said. 'If you watch Ceci's shot, it's one of the most beautiful shots. She has a beautiful release. She never hesitates. She has confidence that's unreal.' In the nine games since the injury to Thornton — whose averages of 14 points and seven rebounds per game are team highs — Zandalasini's scoring average (11 ppg) ranks behind only Salaün's 11.3. Zandalasini's 47.9% shooting also ranks second among players with at least five appearances in that span. Zandalasini has long been known as a reliable 3-point shooter off the bench, and that had mostly been her role with Golden State until Thornton's injury. After two seasons with Minnesota from 2017-18, she spent five years playing overseas and returned to the Lynx in 2024. Last season she ranked sixth in the league in 3-point percentage at 44.3% for the WNBA Finals runners-up. 'Ceci is one of the most steady players I think I've ever played with,' point guard Veronica Burton said. 'Just her ability to come out and be so unfazed, whether she's hit the last three 3s or missed the first three, she's just ready to take the next one. When she gets us going, it just again spaces the floor. You have to respect her.' This season, not only is Zandalasini doing more, but more is being asked of her. According to analytics program Synergy, just 50.6% of her shots have been off a catch-and-shoot, compared to 69.2% last season with the Lynx. She's also facing tighter defense, with 62.8% of her attempts coming against defenders, up from 55.6% last season. Nearly half of her shots this season (48.2%) have come off the dribble, a sharp rise from 30.8% a year ago in Minnesota. 'We want her reading defenses, that's when she's at her best,' assistant coach Kasib Powell told the Chronicle. 'We like putting her in positions where she can make those decisions.' Zandalasini's 23.4 minutes per contest are the most in her career by a good margin. She missed time this year due to injuries, including two separate foot issues, and playing in EuroBasket in June, which prevented her from getting into a consistent rhythm. The Valkyries are 5-9 with Zandalasini in the lineup, but 4-2 with her since June 25, when she's played her best this season. Her consistency will be key to their playoff push. 'She's always been a sniper,' Nakase said. 'I remember, because I had the scout, and she knocked down three 3s against us last year in Vegas. So she's always been like this.'

Joe Ryan throws 6 2/3 innings in Twins' 4-1 victory over the Yankees

NEW YORK (AP) — Joe Ryan allowed a run and four hits in 6 2/3 innings and the Minnesota Twins beat the Yankees 4-1 on Wednesday night, breaking a nine-game losing streak to New York. Ryan (12-5) allowed only a homer to Cody Bellinger in the game that was delayed at the start for 1 hour, 52, minutes because of rain. The right-hander struck out seven, walked two and threw his hardest pitch of the season when he struck out Aaron Judge on a 97.7 mph fastball in the first. After Bellinger homered, Ryan struck out the next four hitters and allowed two baserunners the rest of the way. Kody Clemens hit a two-run double and Royce Lewis added an RBI double in Minnesota's three-run sixth off Yerry De Los Santos (0-1) and Mark Leiter Jr. Rookie Luke Keaschall had an RBI groundout as the Twins beat the Yankees for the first time since April 26, 2023. Minnesota ended its skid to New York after executive chair Joe Pohlad announced his family will remain the principal owner and add two new investment groups instead. Kody Funderburk struck out Austin Wells to end the seventh, and Justin Topa had a six-out save to finish the five-hitter. New York rookie Cam Schlitter allowed one run and three hits in 5 1/3 innings. The hard-throwing righty retired the first nine hitters until Trevor Larnach walked ahead of a double by Byron Buxton. Key Moment Infield hits by Buxton and Keaschall started Minnesota's rally. Clemens followed with a two-strike double, took third when center fielder Trent Grisham bobbled the ball and scored on the Lewis double. Key Stat Clemens was hitless in his previous 18 at-bats before his double. Up Next Minnesota RHP Bailey Ober (4-7, 5.16 ERA) opposes Detroit RHP Tarik Skubal (11-3, 2.35) at home Thursday night. New York RHP Luis Gil (0-1, 7.27) opposes RHP Andre Pallante (6-9, 4.95) in the opener of a three-game series at St. Louis on Friday night. ___
