German terror police probe Munich car attack that injured 28 people when Mini Cooper drove into crowd

Independent13-02-2025
Counter-terrorism police are investigating a 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker suspected of deliberately plowing a car into a crowd in Munich, injuring 28 people.
At least two people are fighting for their lives after a Mini Cooper rammed the protest organised by trade union Verdi, with children among the dozens of injured.
The attack took place a mile away from the venue of the Munich Security Conference which begins on Friday, with US vice president JD Vance and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky due to arrive in the city on Thursday.

Police fired gunshots at the car after it weaved between the police vehicles tailing the demonstration and drove into the crowd. Shellshocked witnesses told of hearing an 'engine roar' and 'wheels spinning', with images showing dozens of police surrounding a smashed-up Mini Cooper as debris was strewn across the floor in the wake of the crash.
At a press briefing on Thursday lunchtime, Bavarian governor Markus Söder said the incident was 'suspected to be an attack'. Investigations are being carried out by the Bavarian Central Office for Combating Extremism and Terrorism, state minister Georg Eisenreich added.
Although eyewitnesses told Bild that two men were seen in the Mini, police said they 'cannot confirm' whether more than one person was involved.
Udo Kunte told Merkur, a local newspaper: 'Suddenly there was an engine roar behind us, wheels spinning and then there was just a clattering.'
Another demonstrator told Bayerischer Rundfunk: "I was in the demonstration and saw that a man was lying under the car. Then I tried to open the door, but it was locked."
Munich's mayor Dieter Reiter told Bild: "The police chief has just informed me that a vehicle drove into a group of people and unfortunately many people were injured, including children. I am deeply shocked. My thoughts are with the injured."
The alleged attacker was already known to police for drug-related offences and shoplifting, Bavarian interior minister Joachim Herrmann told reporters.
Verdi, Germany's second largest trade union with around 1.9 million members, had called a strike for childcare workers to call for better wages and working conditions.
Frank Werneke, the union's chairman, told The Independent in a statement that they are 'deeply dismayed and shocked' by the incident. ' This is a difficult moment for all colleagues. We unions stand for solidarity, especially in such a dark hour.'
The strike had been called after employers failed to submit a final offer in January negotiations. The union promised to 'noticeably increase the pressure until the second round of negotiations on February 17th and 18th'.
Journalist Sandra Demmelhuber wrote in a post on X: 'A person was lying on the street and a young man was taken away by the police. People were sitting on the ground, crying and shaking. Details still unclear.'
Traffic disruptions are expected around the scene and police have asked people to avoid the area so emergency services can carry out their work.
Authorities have set up a collection point for witness statements and a care centre for those psychologically impacted by the suspected attack at Löwenbräukeller on Stiglmaierplatz.
A large-scale police operation was underway near the southern city's central train station due to the Munich Security Conference.

Starmer and Zelensky ‘agree strong resolve' for peace ahead of Trump-Putin talks

The two leaders expressed cautious optimism about the prospect of a truce 'as long as Putin takes action to prove he is serious' about ending the war, as they met on Wednesday, a Downing Street statement said. In a separate statement, Mr Zelensky said there had been discussions about the security guarantees required to make any deal 'truly durable if the United States succeeds in pressing Russia to stop the killing'. The Prime Minister hosted the Ukrainian president for a private breakfast in No 10 on Thursday as Europe braces for the face-to-face meeting between the US president and his Russian counterpart in Alaska on Friday. European leaders are hopeful about the potential for a ceasefire after a joint call with Mr Trump on Wednesday, during which he reportedly told them his goal for the summit was to secure a ceasefire. But concerns linger over the prospect of Kyiv being excluded from negotiations over its own future, and pressured to cede territory, after the US leader suggested any agreement may need to involve 'swapping of land'. Ukraine has already rejected any proposal that would compromise its borders. In a readout of the morning meeting between Sir Keir and Mr Zelensky, a Downing Street spokesman said: 'They had a private breakfast, where they discussed yesterday's meetings. 'They agreed there had been a powerful sense of unity and a strong resolve to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.' On Wednesday, Sir Keir co-chaired a virtual meeting of the 'coalition of the willing' – a European-led effort to send a peacekeeping force to Ukraine to monitor any deal – where he said there was a 'viable' chance of a truce. Downing Street repeated that language on Thursday, with the caveat that it would require the Russian president to take 'action to prove he is serious about peace'. '(Sir Keir and Mr Zelensky) agreed to stay in close touch in the coming days,' the readout said. The Ukrainian president, who was warmly embraced by the Prime Minister, with a red carpet rolled out for his arrival in Downing Street, said the meeting had been 'good' and 'productive'. But he urged the UK to join PURL- Nato's Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List initiative, to provide weapons to Kyiv. 'It is important that, within the framework of the coalition of the willing, we should all be able to achieve effective formats for security cooperation,' he said. 'We also discussed the continuation of support programs for our army and our defense industry. Under any scenario, Ukraine will maintain its strength. 'Keir and I also talked about such mechanisms for weapons supplies as the PURL programme, and I urged the UK to join.' It comes as The Times newspaper reported that Britain was planning to scale back its plans for a military peacekeeping force in Ukraine. UK military chiefs are now said to be involving air reassurance over western Ukraine, training support to the Ukrainian military and the clearance of mines from the Black Sea. The Government has been contacted for comment. Further sanctions could be imposed on Russia should the Kremlin fail to engage and the UK is already working on its next package of measures targeting Moscow, he said. 'We're ready to support this, including from the plans we've already drawn up to deploy a reassurance force once hostilities have ceased,' Sir Keir told allies on Wednesday. 'It is important to remind colleagues that we do stand ready also to increase pressure on Russia, particularly the economy, with sanctions and wider measures as may be necessary.'

Disgraced top Jersey defence lawyer has appeal against seven-month prison sentence rejected

A disgraced Jersey defence lawyer will stay behind bars after having his appeal against a seven-month prison sentence rejected. David Steenson, 57, previously admitted failing to stop after an accident, drink-driving and two counts of dangerous driving. In May, the court heard how Steenson struck a Mini Cooper with his vehicle and left the scene, driving whilst more than double the legal alcohol limit and leaving the other motorist with whiplash and sleeping issues. It was the second time he had appeared in the dock in the last 12 months, previously receiving community service for attacking a taxi driver whilst drunk. Representing himself at the appeal hearing for these latest offences, Steenson told Jersey's Bailiff and sitting Jurats that this was "make or break" for him and he was genuinely remorseful. The case was only scheduled for Thursday morning but rolled into the afternoon as Steenson addressed Sir Timothy Le Cocq for almost four hours. The defendant told the Bailiff he believes that the sentence was based on the wrong facts, the Magistrate did not believe him, was dismissive, and did not take into account his mitigating circumstances. Steenson also said he did not want his family paying the price but the Bailiff responded that 'if a defendant can't take his family into account at the time, it's a bit rich to expect the court to". The prosecution stated that the Magistrate did not pass a wrong judgment and said it cannot seriously be argued that the term exceeded the sentencing guidelines. After a full day in court, the Bailiff ruled that the threshold for appeal was not met, so Steenson's original sentence will stand.

JD Vance reveals his favorite meme of himself is extremely x-rated

JD Vance has revealed that his favourite meme of himself is 'very inappropriate' but 'very funny'. Appearing on The Katie Miller Podcast on Monday (11 August), the US vice president said the meme he likes the most began circulating after the Pope died. The meme in question features the Pope, Vance's wife Usha, and a couch. A fake passage from Vance's memoir Hillbilly Elegy about having sex with a couch when he was younger circulated during the 2024 election cycle. The meme suggested that if these were Vance's options for the game of "F***, Marry, Kill," then the he would marry Usha, kill the Pope, and f*** the couch. He said the meme was 'pretty good', adding that he hoped someone who was right wing thought of it.
