Wydad appoint Benhachem as coach ahead of the Club World Cup
Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca announced Mohamed Amine Benhachem as their new coach on Saturday ahead of next month's Club World Cup.
Wydad, who finished third in the most recent season of the Moroccan top flight, will compete in the revamped tournament, which will be held in the United States from June 14 to July 13, in Group G alongside Manchester City, Juventus, and Al Ain.
Former Wydad player Benhachem, 49, expressed his emotional connection to the club in an interview on the club's YouTube channel.
"My goal is to return to the CAF Champions League and compete for the title. The club's project includes several objectives, the most important of which is competing for titles, and this is what we will strive to achieve in the Club World Cup as well," Benhachem said.

Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images/File Photo REUTERS OAKMONT, Pennsylvania - Overnight U.S. Open leader Sam Burns, seeking the biggest win of his career, got his final round underway on Sunday at partly cloudy Oakmont Country Club with a one-shot lead over Australian Adam Scott and J.J. Spaun on Sunday. Burns, who is four under one the week, went out in the final pairing alongside 44-year-old Scott, the 2013 Masters champion and only player this week with three rounds of par or better. Spaun, who had a share of the lead until a closing bogey on Saturday, is playing one group ahead with world number 14 Viktor Hovland, who is three shots back of Burns. Burns, Scott, Spaun and Hovland are the only players who were under par after the third round at a major that is considered to be golf's toughest test. Among the early starters, reigning Masters champion Rory McIlroy reached the clubhouse with a three-under-par 67 that was his best round of the week left him at seven over. Pre-tournament favourite and world number one Scottie Scheffler, who began the final round eights shots off the lead, was one over through his first four holes. Italy appoint Gattuso as manager
Former AC Milan and Napoli manager Gennaro Gattuso has been appointed Italy national team coach, the Italian football federation (FIGC) said on Sunday. Gattuso replaces Luciano Spalletti, who was sacked last week following a heavy defeat by Norway in a World Cup qualifier. The former midfielder will be formally introduced as coach on Thursday at Rome's Parco dei Principi Hotel. "Gattuso is a symbol of Italian football - the blue jersey is like a second skin for him. His motivations, his professionalism and his experience will be fundamental to best face the upcoming commitments of the National Team," FIGC President Gabriele Gravina said in a statement. Gattuso, 47, made 73 appearances for Italy and was a member of the 2006 World Cup-winning squad. He recently left Croatian club Hajduk Split by mutual consent, after a third-placed finish in the country's top flight. Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham laments challenge of Super Rugby away days after another s-final loss
ACT Brumbies' coach Stephen Larkham before the Super Rugby Pacific semi-final against the Waikato Chiefs at FMG Stadium in Hamilton on June 14, 2025. PHOTO: AFP Coach Stephen Larkham did not believe his ACT Brumbies side went into the June 14 Super Rugby Pacific clash with the Waikato Chiefs in a negative frame of mind despite the team's dismal semi-final track record. The Brumbies crashed out in the semi-finals for the fourth season in a row as Larkham's side lost 37-17 to the Chiefs, who set up an all-New Zealand final against the Canterbury Crusaders in Christchurch on June 21. 'Psychologically, I thought we were in a good place, I thought our preparation was really good to build into this game from the other games that we've played,' said Larkham. 'I don't know if that was a factor. We certainly have spoken a lot to make sure that that doesn't come into it. 'It's hard to play away from home, whether it's in Australia or New Zealand. There is an advantage to the home side and I thought they played really well.' Larkham has been at the helm for three of the Brumbies' four semi-final losses, having also overseen a defeat at the hands of the Chiefs in 2023 ahead of last year's reversal against the Auckland Blues. Those defeats prompted the former Wallaby to launch reviews into his team's operations and Larkham vowed to go through a similar process when the current season concludes after his side's clash with the British and Irish Lions in July. 'We'll go through the process of identifying, particularly in these last two games, what wasn't robust, what isn't good enough yet and spend enough time in the off-season to put us in a better position,' he said. 'The British and Irish Lions game for us is around the corner. We'll have a short prep going into that. We'll run the same programme that we've been running into this game, we'll just see if we can do it better.' REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
