[UPDATED] Anwar urges restraint on Petronas-Petros issue, pending talks with Sarawak
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged all quarters to refrain from any action or making public statements regarding the Petronas-Petros issue until further discussions are held with the Sarawak government.
Anwar said he had spoken to Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg yesterday, adding that both sides would resume discussions once the premier returns from his official visit to London, United Kingdom.
"I had the opportunity to speak with the Sarawak premier yesterday regarding the Petronas-Petros matter, based on the principles previously agreed upon.
"Upon the Premier's return from his official visit to London, United Kingdom, we will immediately hold further discussions to finalise the matter.
"In the meantime, in the interest of all parties, any action or public statements should be withheld," he said in a post on Facebook.
Anwar added that he remained optimistic that the matter could be resolved amicably.
"I remain highly confident that this issue can be resolved with wisdom and by staying firmly within the bounds of healthy and meaningful discourse, God willing," he said.
Earlier, Abang Johari said he was "playing ball" with Petronas amid the ongoing dispute over natural gas in the state.
This comes after an escalation of dispute between the two companies where Petronas confirmed it had received a legal notice from the Sarawak government, stating that its exploration arm, Petronas Carigali, was operating illegally in Sarawak and had violated Section 7(e) of the Sarawak Distribution of Gas Ordinance 2016.
Petronas Carigali has been given 21 days to obtain the necessary licence, failing which could lead to financial penalties under Section 21A of the ordinance.
Last Monday, Petronas failed to obtain an injunction in a Kuching high court to halt the suit filed by the state-owned petroleum company Petros to stop the court from hearing the suit on gas payments.

Anwar: Govt may set up TVET commission
MELAKA: The government is mulling the proposal to establish a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Commission in line with the TVET reform agenda that is being actively implemented. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this was because the development of TVET under the National TVET Council, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, has shown encouraging results, including an increase in the number of students. "I appreciate the role of the TVET Council, but as those closely monitoring the sector's development, we must consider proposals such as establishing a dedicated commission for TVET, and we will assess this as swiftly as possible in response to the sector's evolving needs. "With the number of students and types of training increasing, I, together with the Finance Ministry, will look into whether current facilities are adequate and how to create synergy between government-linked companies, private sector players, and existing TVET institutions." Anwar said this when opening the National TVET Day 2025 celebration at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC), Ayer Keroh, here today.
