Rory McIlroy relishing ‘great opportunity' to lift FedEx Cup from level start
Masters champion McIlroy is second in the FedEx rankings behind defending champion Scottie Scheffler, but will not start with a two-shot deficit as the unpopular starting-strokes format has been scrapped this year.
Every player will start equal at East Lake in Atlanta on Thursday, meaning the Tour Championship winner will also be crowned FedEx champion and will pocket the £7.4million [€8.57m] on offer.
McIlroy said: 'Any time you make it back to East Lake you've had a good year and it's always nice to come back.

'We've played this event and this golf course in a bunch of different formats.
'It has a different feel, any one of the 30 has a chance to win the FedEx Cup this year, which is obviously a lot different than it's been in previous years.
'It's a clean slate for everyone and it's a great opportunity for one of the guys who maybe wasn't a huge part of the season to put their hand up and have a chance to win the big prize at the end of the year.
'It's also an opportunity for some of the guys who have had great years to rubberstamp the season a little bit and end of a positive note. There's still a lot to play for this week.'
Tommy Fleetwood, up to fifth in the FedEx Cup rankings after back-to-back tied-third and tied-fourth finishes, said he was excited that this year's new format gives everyone an equal chance.
He said: 'I'm sure everybody aside from Scottie Scheffler will love the fact we're all starting on a level playing field. You win this week and you're holding two trophies.'
Fleetwood, who has had seven top-10 finishes this season, is still chasing his first PGA Tour win after coming close at the FedEx St Jude Championship before his tied-fourth finish on Sunday at the BMW Championship.
He added: 'I'll finish it off at some point. I'll get it right and I'll get it right more than once.
'Best-case scenario, coming down the stretch at East Lake with a chance to win. Whether I get it right or not, whether someone plays better or not, I'll talk about that after.'

Russell Henley shot 61 to move into a two-stroke lead after the first round of the Tour Championship, finishing with three straight birdies to move to nine under par. It leaves him two clear of defending champion Scottie Scheffler, the world number one finishing on his own in second place at the East Lake Golf Club. Rory McIlroy was the best of the Irish on four under par, with Shane Lowry finishing on even par. McIlroy made it to the turn on three under, after a spectacular 30-foot putt for eagle at seven. The back nine was more mixed as the county Down man mixed three birdies with two bogeys. For Lowry, it was a more consistent day, with two birdies and two bogeys to finish on level par. The course was set up to be more challenging with pins tucked in corners of the greens but it mattered little. In total, 22 of the 30 players were under par, six players were even and just two players were over par. The combined score of the field was 82 under par. Perhaps it was the heavy rain that pummelled the Atlanta area Tuesday and Wednesday that helped the golfers, with Round 1 played under preferred lies rules due to evening downpours. This allowed balls on the fairways or other closely mown areas to be lifted, cleaned and placed in a preferred spot. The Tour Championship winner will also be crowned FedEx champion and will pocket the $10m on offer, which equates to roughly €8.6m.

Scottie Scheffler outguns Rory McIIroy on day one in battle for Tour Championship
Henley, who has already qualified for Keegan Bradley's US Ryder Cup team, made 207 feet of putts to lead by two from Scheffler, who shot 63 to McIlroy's 66. European Ryder Cup qualifiers Robert MacInytre and Tommy Fleetwood and US wildcard hopefuls Collin Morikawa, Patrick Cantlay and Justin Thomas shot 64s to share third as McIlroy's 66 left him tied for eighth. Henley was impressive but Scheffler was his usual relentless self as he bids to sweep the three playoff events and retain the FedExCup in what is a winner-takes-all affair in Atlanta this year. Battling each other for PGA Tour Player of the Year honours, it was Scheffler who had the better of the early exchanges as he birdied the second and third to move swiftly to two under. After making birdie at the par-five sixth, he watched McIlroy make eagle from 30 feet there and then birdie the seventh from seven feet to close the gap to two strokes. The world No. 1 then birdied the 10th to go three ahead and after McIlroy followed a birdie at the 11th with a three-putt bogey the 14th, there was still just a shot between them as both made twos at the short 15th. There was a chance of a two-shot swing in McIlroy's favour at the 16th but Scheffler made a 26-footer for par and the Holywood star left a 13-foot birdie chance on the lip. In the end, the two-shot swing came at the 17th, where Scheffler brushed in a 27-footer to get to six under as McIlroy bunkered his approach and made bogey to slip back to three under. McIlroy and Scheffler both found sand at the 18th but as the American got up and down, the Masters champion caromed off the grandstand behind the green and made the resulting 17-footer for birdie to stay in touch. Shane Lowry made two birdies and two bogeys in a level par 70 where he battled a lukewarm putter after also three putting the 14th. The Offaly man was tied for 23rd with the likes of US Ryder Cup skipper Keegan Bradley and European wildcard candidate Harry Hall.

Lowry stuck in neutral as he shoots opening 70 in humid Atlanta
This month upcoming could change Shane Lowry's outlook and appreciation for 2025 significantly. A $40m purse and the FedEx Cup title is at stake this week in the Tour Championship at East Lake. The Amgen Irish Open at The K Club and the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth – two events Lowry has experience of winning – are on deck before the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black. Any one of these weeks could change the trajectory of Lowry's season and rewrite the narrative. The key will be turning around form that has let him down of late. That didn't happen Thursday at East Lake, where Lowry shot an even-par 70 to put himself near the bottom of the 30-man field on a day when soft conditions led to some low scoring. It will leave him with some catching up to do, though he's closer to the lead than he ever was a year ago in his Tour Championship debut when he began the event already seven behind top-ranked Scheffler in the starting strokes system and ultimately finished ninth 14 shots behind. This time he'll be at least six behind starting Friday with fewer rounds to catch up. Collin Morikawa, who shot the lowest 72-hole score on the redesigned East Lake course last year, and 2021 FedEx Cup champion Patrick Cantlay finished with 6-under 64s on Thursday. Russell Henley reached 7-under with two holes left to play including the par-5 finisher. 'I'm for it this way now and I've got to do what I've got to do but last year I knew my challenge as well, I had shots to make up,' Morikawa said. 'Different mindset that way, so it's nice that I would have started this week if I was, whatever, 1-under, 2-under, I still would have been pretty far behind. 'I've put together quality rounds out here, and that's what's been nice. It's just now doing it on the correct four rounds in the correct year.' Justin Thomas, the 2017 FedEx Cup winner, went out in 29 and push to the top of the leaderboard at 7-under before making a hash of the 16th hole for double. Scotland's Robert MacIntyre extended his hot hand after his runner-up last week, stringing together birdies on 11, 12 and 13 to climb to 6-under before making bogey on 16. Rory McIlroy went eagle-birdie on holes 6 and 7 to catch up with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler at the turn and both reached 4-under through 12 holes. Lowry's 2025 season to date has been hard to define. At times he's been close to spectacular, finishing second to McIlroy at Pebble Beach and contending until the last hole in the signature event at Philadelphia Cricket Club. He even came close to putting himself in the final pairing with McIlroy again at the Masters. Those performances as well as a top-10 at Bay Hill pushed him to a career-best No. 10 in the world. Too often, however, Lowry's season has been frustrating and often disappointing. He let that Philadelphia opportunity slip away with untimely errors down the stretch, collapsed with a Sunday 81 at Augusta, openly displayed irritation with rulings and himself at the other three majors. His inconsistency since reaching 10th in the OWGR before the PGA has let his ranking steadily slip back to No. 21. As high as eighth in the FedEx Cup standings in the spring, he hung on to enter the Tour Championship 24th of 30. With an equal chance as anyone else in the field, Lowry was stuck in idle in Thursday's first round, making bogey on the first and never really generating any momentum. He made two birdies and two bogeys and couldn't capitalize on some mid-range birdie putts he faced. McIlroy started slow himself with six consecutive pars to fall a couple behind playing partner Scheffler. But his day ignited with a 30-foot eagle putt on 6 followed by a 7-footer on 7 for birdie.
