Chris Evans Says He Proposed to Wife Alba Baptista in Portuguese: 'I Had Practiced All Week'
Captain America himself just proved he's a real-life romantic hero.
Chris Evans is revealing sweet new details about how he popped the question to wife Alba Baptista — and it turns out he did it in her native language. While attending the New York City premiere of his new film Materialists on Saturday (June 7), the Marvel alum opened up to The Knot about the moment he asked the Portuguese actress to marry him.
'I proposed to my wife in, she's Portuguese, so I learned how to say 'Will you marry me?' in Portuguese,' Evans shared. 'And I was so [nervous], and I had practiced all week! I had practiced it so much that, you know, while her and I, I'd be making breakfast and you, you almost just start saying it out loud, like, 'Oh god! That's not just a song that's stuck in my head. It's gonna let the cat out of the bag.''
Despite his preparation, the actor admitted the big moment didn't exactly go off without a hitch. 'I got really nervous when it came time to do it and I actually think I screwed it up, but I still know it!' he added.
Evans, 43, and Baptista, 26, were quietly engaged before tying the knot in September 2023. The couple exchanged vows during a private ceremony at Evans' home outside of Boston, followed by a second celebration in Baptista's home country of Portugal. The pair have kept their relationship mostly under wraps, making only a handful of public appearances since first being linked in 2022.
The actor is currently promoting Materialists, a romantic dramedy from Past Lives director Celine Song. The film — which also stars Dakota Johnson and Pedro Pascal — follows a high-society matchmaker navigating love, money, and morality in modern-day Manhattan. It marks a return to more grounded, character-driven work for Evans, who became a household name as Steve Rogers in Marvel's Captain America and Avengers franchises.
In addition to his decade-long run in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Evans has starred in a wide range of films, including Knives Out, Snowpiercer, Gifted, The Gray Man, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. More recently, he appeared opposite Ana de Armas in the action rom-com Ghosted for Apple TV+.
Now, with Materialists set to hit U.S. theaters on June 13, fans will see a different side of Evans — and judging by the red carpet buzz, he's happy to be back in the spotlight with his real-life leading lady by his side.

Helen J Shen Brings Her Maybe Happy Ending Character to the Tonys Red Carpet
Not only does tonight mark Helen J Shen's first time attending the Tony Awards, but she'll also be taking the stage to perform a number from her show Maybe Happy Ending, which received 10 nominations, including for best new musical. 'Every single new echelon of this process has been such a surprise,' Shen tells me over the phone a day earlier. She's on her break between the Saturday matinee and evening shows, and has to get up early for the award show's dress rehearsals. For Sunday's special occasion, Shen and her stylist, Ashley Afriyie, wanted to make sure it felt like Shen's character Claire, a helper-bot, was there with them on the red carpet. 'Typically, a lot of what I gravitate toward has a rock and roll edge, which is the opposite of Claire,' Shen says. 'But something I have learned from playing Claire is that there is a lot of strength in vulnerability and softness. That's why I was drawn to this Pamela Rolland dress, which has a very feminine and soft silhouette and color. I'm really excited for it to feel like Claire's on the red carpet too.' Shen had the same thought when it came to her beauty look (by hairstylist Sky Kim and makeup artist Yoshi Sekimoto): She wanted the freckles that she and Claire share to have a moment at the Tonys, too. 'The freckles that Claire has are actually a moment where I wanted to bring Claire and Helen together,' Shen tells me. 'I have natural freckles, and growing up I always covered them up. I felt like they were some kind of imperfection—but in adulthood, I have learned to love them and embrace them, and to do it on Broadway is so lovely.' Her goal with the glam overall is to give all the little girls out there something to look up to: 'My face has always been round, and I loved seeing people with round faces doing glam,' she says. 'So there's a part of little Helen that's really excited to be leading a Broadway show and being in a romantic comedy, being romantic lead, and knowing I don't look like what I thought that I needed to look like in order to play those kinds of roles and embody that kind of a character.'
