Perak leads in domestic tourism for 2024 with 10.2 million visitors

The Star22-06-2025
IPOH: Perak took the top spot for the highest number of domestic tourists in 2024, says Loh Sze Yee.
The state tourism committee chairman said, according to the Statistics Department, Perak welcomed 10.2 million local tourists, followed by Selangor and Pahang with 9.6 million and 9.5 million respectively last year.
Loh attributed the achievement partly to the Visit Perak Year 2024 campaign.
"It proves the effectiveness of the campaign and the efforts of all those involved.
"The synergy and cooperation between the state and federal agencies, the industry players, and the people are key to the achievement," he said at a press conference after attending the first-ever Car Free Day programme in Kampar on Saturday (June 21).
Loh said the 10.2 million domestic tourists last year represented a 36.1% increase compared to 7.5 million in 2023.
He noted that in terms of domestic visitors, 21.8 million people came to Perak in 2024 compared to 17.1 million in 2023.
"Domestic tourists are those who stayed at least one night in Perak, while domestic visitors also included day-trip tourists," he added.
The top five districts visited included Kinta, followed by Larut and Matang, Manjung, Kuala Kangsar, and Batang Padang.
"The top five destinations are Teluk Batik, Lumut Waterfront, Ipoh Night Market, Gunung Lang Recreational Park, and Pangkor Island," he said.
Loh said the state hopes to maintain the momentum for next year, with it being Visit Malaysia 2026.
"It's going to be a free-for-all between all states to vie for tourists," he added.

Over 70% of B40 households own homes, says survey

KUALA LUMPUR: Some 73.8% of those from the low income households (B40) own houses, says Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming. Citing statistics from the Housing Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES), the minister said 22.8% meanwhile rented homes while 3.4% lived in quarters. The findings were based on the HIES 2022 survey, carried out by the Statistics Department. 'The ministry's priority is towards ensuring shelter for all, regardless of whether it is ownership, or rental,' he said in a parliamentary written reply on Tuesday (Aug 19). Nga added that various programmes have been carried out to support home ownership in Malaysia. This includes rent-to-own schemes specifically for people's housing projects and people's residential projects. 'Engagements are also being carried out with stakeholders, including state governments, to explore collaborations with financial institutions aimed at sourcing for alternative and suitable financing initiatives," he said. He said that a housing credit guarantee scheme is also available, with financing guarantees of up to RM500,000 for first home purchases, regardless of whether it is a new, existing, or auctioned home. As of May 31 this year, some RM20.9bil has been approved across 88,507 applications. Nga said the ministry is also drafting the Residential Tenancy Act aimed at protecting the rights of tenants and landlords. 'This aims to balance both the rights and responsibilities borne by tenants and landlords, without involving control over rental rates. 'The drafting of this Act is also inline with other developed countries, where premises rentals are regulated by a specific law,' he said. The minister was responding to a question by Datuk Seri Dr Ismail Abd Muttalib (PN-Maran) who asked about the percentage of home ownership among those from the B40 income group.

The paradox of rising approvals and falling FDIs

COMMENT | It was an astonishing announcement last Friday by the Statistics Department (DOSM) on foreign direct investment (FDI) into Malaysia - inflow plummeted from RM15.6 billion in the first quarter to RM1.6 billion in the second quarter of this year. FDI between the first and second quarters of this year plunged 90 percent. Is this a cause for serious concern? It depends on the reasons for that fall and what constitutes FDI. What makes it confusing is the confounding and astounding claims the government routinely makes of securing hundreds of billions in FDI. In their much-publicised overseas missions, both Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz...

Terengganu MOTAC urges schools to join K3P for tourism growth

KUALA BERANG: The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) Terengganu Office is encouraging greater school involvement in the Student's Tourism Programme (K3P) to cultivate future tourism ambassadors. Director Mazshida Ruslal revealed that around 180 students from six secondary schools have enrolled as K3P members this year. She highlighted that the programme offers students early exposure to the tourism industry through volunteer work and hands-on activities. 'K3P registration is open to secondary schools, requiring at least 30 voluntary student members,' she said. Mazshida noted that many schools prioritise other clubs, such as sports, leaving few teachers willing to mentor tourism initiatives. 'Without enough students or mentors, schools struggle to form K3P units,' she added during the Rimba Explorers K3P event at Rimba Razia Zoo. She emphasised that K3P not only trains young ambassadors but also raises awareness of tourism career opportunities. The ministry is refining the K3P module to enhance student ambassador quality ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026. 'We aim for more Terengganu schools to join K3P next year,' Mazshida stated. This year's activities include arts, handicrafts, tree planting, and petting zoo experiences. - Bernama
