Sky News8 hours ago
Manchester United had the most fans arrested of all professional clubs in England and Wales last season, according to Home Office data.
The 121 arrests of United supporters is more than 25% higher than that of their rivals Manchester City - who are in second place with 94 arrests.
West Ham, which had the highest number of fans arrested in each of the previous three seasons, are in third place with 77 supporters arrested during the 2024/25 campaign.
Chelsea are in fourth place with 76 supporters arrested while Aston Villa are in fifth with 71.
All arrests relate to men's football.
Of the Man United arrests, 49% came during home games - with 34 of them for public or violent disorder.
It comes as the number of football-related arrests last season dropped from to 1,932 from 2,584 during the 2023/24 campaign, the Home Office data for both seasons shows.
It marks the first drop since fans returned to stadiums after the COVID-19 pandemic.
The figures relate to matches involving English and Welsh clubs in the top six tiers of men's football in England - from the Premier League down to the National League North/South divisions.
The most common arrest type this season was public disorder (32%) - an offence used to describe acts of violence or intimidation in public.
The percentage of arrests for possession of Class A drugs was the highest since it became a Schedule 1 offence in November 2022, up to 19% from an initial 9% in 2022-23.
The number of matches with reported incidents increased however by 18%, from 1,341 to 1,583.
A total of 2,439 banning orders were in force as of 1 June 2025, an increase of 12% compared with the end of the previous season, and the highest number in force since the end of the 2012/13 season.
Banning orders prevent individuals from attending matches in the UK and individuals subject to orders can be ordered to hand over their passports to police before overseas matches and tournaments.
West Ham had the most supporters with a banning order in force at the end of last season, up from 93 to 112.
Manchester United were second with 108, up from 89. Chelsea's increase from 54 to 80 moved them up from eighth at the end of 2023/24 to third by June 2025.
The most common reported incidents were related to hate crime - reported at 420 of the 1,583 matches where at least one incident was reported. Of those hate crime reports, 287 incidents related to race, 140 to sexual orientation, 20 to religion, 19 to disability and three to gender identity.
The number of hate crime reports at matches was up from 341 in 2023/24, and was the highest on record within the Home Office data provided which goes back to the 2017/18 season.
The number of online hate crimes recorded in connection to football decreased from 322 in 2023/24 to 212 last season.
Policing minister Dame Diana Johnson said: "Police up and down the country work incredibly hard to ensure football stadiums are safe, so we can all enjoy our national game.
"Today's statistics show that these efforts are paying off and strong action is being taken to stop violence and disorder from ruining football.

Where the first Lions Test will be won and lost v Australia: DAN BIGGAR breaks down the five key battles

There can't be too many complaints about Andy Farrell's selection for the first Test. After months of 'predicted XVs', he's pretty much settled on the team everyone expected, when you factor in the injury to full-back Blair Kinghorn. On the flipside, Australia's team feels a little underwhelming without the injured Rob Valentini, Noah Lolesio and Will Skelton. They're missing a lot of firepower and the Lions will go in as strong favourites.

Hannah Hampton: England heading in ‘right direction' after dramatic penalty win

Lucy Bronze's winning spot-kick – England's seventh of an error-strewn shootout – coupled with Smilla Holmberg's miss, booked the Lionesses a last-four meeting with Italy after they staged a stirring late fightback to snatch a 2-2 draw in 90 minutes. Bronze and substitute Michelle Agyemang scored in the space of 103 seconds to cancel out Kosovare Asllani's opener and Stina Blackstenius' 25th-minute strike, while Hampton earned player-of-the-match honours for a massive shift which included two saves in the shootout. This team never gives up ✨ On to the last four, together ❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 — Lionesses (@Lionesses) July 18, 2025 'It shows proper England is back,' said Hampton, when asked about the Lionesses' commitment to fight with everything they had – even at the expense of her own nose – after clawing their way back into the contest. 'We're going in the right direction. I think you know that everyone would be putting their bodies on the line. Literally you could see that out there. 'We said at half-time, 'we don't want to go home, so it's down to us to turn the game around'.' Much of the build-up to this tournament centred around Chelsea shot-stopper Hampton, who had gradually usurped popular Euro-winning keeper Mary Earps as Sarina Wiegman's first choice. Earps announced her shock international retirement before Wiegman's squad announcement, as a result leaving major-tournament debutant Hampton with the weight of the nation's expectations on her 24-year-old shoulders. 'It's obviously been a difficult couple of years (for me) within the England environment,' said Hampton, '(but) all the girls were ecstatic (tonight). They've seen all the hard work that I've put in and how difficult it's been, and how they've helped me get to the point that I am now, where I am happy to be wearing an England shirt again.' For nearly 80 minutes victory seemed out of reach, but the introduction of three 70th-minute substitutes – including Agyemang – followed shortly by Chloe Kelly – sparked England to life. It was Kelly who made an instant impact, her deep cross picking out 33-year-old Bronze – England's oldest and most experienced major tournament player – who cushioned a header past Jennifer Falk to give England hope. Moments later, 19-year-old substitute Agyemang, the youngest of the group winning just her third cap, scored to force extra-time. The error-strewn shootout saw Falk make four saves, but Sweden's own misses – including one from their keeper – allowed Bronze to emphatically fire in the one that ultimately counted. England boss Wiegman agreed it was the most chaotic contest she had ever witnessed, the usually composed Dutchwoman admitting even she was still feeling 'hyper' and 'very emotional' long after the final whistle. Wiegman rarely dishes out individual praise, but allowed herself to laud Bronze, who before this contest had reminded England that they were capable of 'win(ning) a game in any means possible.' 'Lucy Bronze is one of a kind,' said Wiegman. 'I have never, ever seen this before in my life, and I'm very lucky person that I've worked with so many incredible people, incredible football players, and there are so so many, but what she does, and her mentality. 'That penalty, the goal, but that's not (even) what defines her. It's that resilience, that fight. I think the only way to get her off the pitch is in a wheelchair.'

Penalty shootout star Hannah Hampton praises backing from England supporters

With the score locked at 2-2 after extra-time, penalties brought drama at the Letzigrund Stadium and heroics from goalkeeper Hampton. Despite three consecutive England failures from the spot, Lucy Bronze's smashed effort put the pressure on Sweden youngster Smilla Holmberg, who skied her attempt to give the Lionesses the win. 'It all went so quick, we are all so happy and the fans were behind us and knew not to write us off,' Chelsea's Hampton, who saved from Filippa Angeldal and Sofia Jakobsson in the shootout, told the BBC. 'It was stressful watching and playing, I thought every single time when I saved one, 'Please score and give us a cushion'. I feel so happy and relieved.' On the backing she received from fans during the shootout, she added: 'It helps you get the edge, push on and stretch extra for each save and I appreciated the support.' After Kosovare Asllani's early strike, Stina Blackstenius doubled Sweden's lead and it looked like England's hopes of retaining their trophy were fading. Sarina Wiegman's side left it late as Bronze's header in the 79th minute and substitute Michelle Agyemang's tap-in moments later sent the tie into extra-time. Hampton, who suffered a bloodied nose during the match, added: 'It's fine, me and nose bleeds never go well, so as soon as the doctor looked at my nose bleed I thought, 'Oh no not again'. THE moment. Try and watch this without smiling ☺️ — Lionesses (@Lionesses) July 17, 2025 One sour note for England was skipper Leah Williamson limping off with a possible ankle injury. 'It wasn't about me and a game like that requires you to be at 100 per cent, but I don't know,' Williamson said about the severity of her injury. 'I feel really proud, it was awful to watch at the end, but I love that we never give up, we're never done, the fightback and to stay in it mentally was incredible.'
