Scattered strong storms across Maryland Friday and Saturday
Expect areas of mist, drizzle, fog, and scattered showers this morning. Scattered strong thunderstorms return Friday and Saturday along with heat and humidity.
Morning Commute: Fog, Mist, & Drizzle
Patchy dense fog will be a problem this morning across the area. Visibility is less than 1/2 mile in many places along with mist, drizzle, and scattered showers will mean a slower than normal morning commute. Be extra aware and give yourself extra time to get to your destination. The gloominess should begin to lift later this morning.
Later today skies will remain mostly cloudy to partly sunny. A few isolated showers will be possible, especially across northeastern Maryland this afternoon. Highs will top out in the middle to upper 70s with very high levels of humidity continuing.
O's Game Weather
If you're headed to the O's game this afternoon, we're looking at mostly cloudy, warm, and humid weather. Temperatures will be in the low to mid 70s for the first pitch at 12:35 pm against the Twins. Expect a mostly cloudy and dry game with temperatures staying in the 70s.
Scattered Strong Storms Friday & Saturday
Scattered strong thunderstorms will be possible Friday and Saturday. Friday has two rounds of potential storms that we are tracking. One round in the morning possible between 5 AM and 9 AM and a second round after 4 PM. Any storms Friday could have drenching downpours, lightning, hail, and gusty winds. The best chance for any severe weather would be late Friday afternoon and evening.
An additional round of strong thunderstorms are possible overnight Friday and Saturday afternoon. Any storms would contain frequent lightning, downpours, gusty winds, and hail. The timing and coverage of these storms are still a bit uncertain right now, but any storms that do form have the potential to become severe.
It is possible that the WJZ First Alert Weather Team will need to issue a First Alert Weather Day(s) for severe storms Friday and/or Saturday as new information arrives. So please keep checking back for updates.
Preakness Forecast Saturday
Saturday's forecast for the Preakness is improving. Any storms that form on Saturday look to be rather isolated and also fast-moving. So even in the worst case scenario, a 45 to 60 minute passing thunderstorm is possible Saturday afternoon at Pimlico. The bigger story will be the afternoon heat and humidity with temperatures in the mid to upper 80s with high humidity. Heat index values will top out in the lower 90s.
By the time the main race begins (7:01 PM), any isolated storms should be over. Temperatures will be in the lower 80s with clearing skies, breezy weather, and falling humidity.
Beautiful Sunday and Monday
Excellent outdoor weather returns Sunday and Monday with a gusty and refreshing northwest breeze, low humidity, and comfortable temperatures. With plenty of sunshine, high temperatures will reach the middle to upper 70s. Both days look exceptionally comfortable and dry.
Wet Pattern Returns Next Week
An unsettled and wet weather pattern will return mid to late next week as an area of low pressure meanders across our area. This will mean cloudy skies with rounds of rain. Temperatures will turn dramatically cooler again with highs in the mid to upper 60s. Showers will begin Wednesday and more rounds of rain will continue through the rest of next week.

Canadian wildfire smoke in the Pittsburgh area will be thickening today and causing poor air quality throughout the region. Any Alert Days Ahead? Friday may end up being one but right now the chance looks VERY low. Next Monday probably has a slightly higher chance of being a First Alert Weather Day but chance is still low. Aware: Air quality will be the lowest in the Mon Valley today, but that is due to pollutants from local factories more than it is due to Canadian smoke. The 'Pittsburgh Smells' App will likely see an active day today. It's always something isn't it? We finally get a couple of days where temperatures will be about where you'd expect them to be, but Canadian wildfire smoke is back. Overall, the most noticeable impact from the smoke is expected to be gorgeous sunrises and sunsets. With the current atmospheric set-up, we know that some of the smoke that's aloft will 'mix' down to the surface. This, along with ample Ozone development, will lead to air quality conditions in the 'yellow' zone. Yellow is known as 'moderate' air quality. This is the first step past 'good' air quality. There are five steps, with the next step being 'orange'. Orange is the 'sensitive' range. The difference is that moderate means people with respiratory issues may be a little short of breath today. The sensitive range adds young children and older folks to the list of people who may be impacted. KDKA Weather Center On top of dealing with Canadian smoke, we will also see a spike in Ozone this afternoon with ample sunshine. Ozone is created in the atmosphere through a chemical process where the sun's ultraviolet rays cause the development of Ozone-3 (O3). This happens on sunny days. Finally, the Mon Valley will see the worst conditions today (and all week) due to high pressure trapping particulates from factory exhaust at the surface. At times yesterday, the Liberty & North Braddock air quality sensors dipped to red. That means the air was unhealthy for everyone. Getting back to the forecast, rain stays away through Thursday morning. Highs today should return to the 80s with noon temperatures in the mid-70s. Winds will be light, coming in out of the south at around 5mph. We could see winds gusting past 15mph. Wednesday will likely be the hottest day of the week; I have Pittsburgh hitting a high temperature of 87°. I keep us just as warm on Thursday, even with the rain chance. I have us hitting 86° for Thursday's high. I also keep us in the mid 80s on Friday before we cool down just a bit for the weekend. I have Saturday highs in the upper 70s with Sunday highs near 80 degrees. KDKA Weather Center Expect Friday evening rain, so your 'day' will be dry. Refreshing today in Maryland followed by heat and humidity
Gorgeous Outdoor Weather Today Early morning chilly temperatures were the big story across Maryland on this Monday. Temperatures started in the middle to upper 40s with a mostly clear sky. Warmer weather will return to the area this afternoon with highs climbing into the middle 70s. A wind out of the northwest will keep temperatures comfortable and humidity levels low. Under a mostly clear sky tonight, expect another cool night with lows dipping down into the lower to middle 50s. Turning Warmer Tuesday While Tuesday morning will start comfortably cool with early morning temperatures in the 50s to near 60°, warmer weather will build into the area midday into the afternoon hours. Highs will climb into the lower 80s with a south-southwest wind at 10 mph. Humidity levels will remain comfortable. Canadian Wildfire Smoke Arrives In addition to a warm Tuesday, the sky will likely be very hazy. Canadian wildfire smoke that has been visible in our sky since Sunday will continue to build across the state. This heavier concentration of smoke means that some of the smoke may reach ground level. This would create a film or haze over the sun. It may also give the air a smoky smell across parts of Maryland. The best chance of experiencing this Tuesday would be across west-central Maryland, however, the whole state will see some impacts from haze from the Canadian wildfire smoke. Summer-like Heat Wednesday through Friday The first taste of summer heat and humidity will build into Maryland by Wednesday. Highs temperatures Wednesday afternoon will climb into the upper 80s near Chesapeake Bay to the lower 90s north and west of the Baltimore Beltway. Thursday will be the hottest day of the stretch with heat and humidity all across the state. Many areas will experience their first 90° day of the year so far. We'll see a mixture of sunshine and clouds, but there looks to be little to no thunderstorms on Thursday to cool us off. Friday will be muggy and warm with an isolated thunderstorm or two later in the day. Otherwise expect summer-like temperatures with highs in the upper 80s. Scattered Strong Storms Saturday A strong cold front will approach the area Saturday from the northwest. Saturday looks to start dry, warm, and muggy with partial sunshine. As heat and humidity builds throughout the day, the cold front will start to trigger scattered thunderstorms across Pennsylvania and western Maryland. These storms could intensify and become strong to severe by the time they reach our area Saturday afternoon and evening. Stay tuned as the WJZ First Alert Weather Team will finetune this forecast once we gain more clarity on timing and intensity of storms. Superb Sunday Behind Saturday's strong cold front, humidity levels should fall throughout Sunday as the sky clears during the morning. Expect mostly sunny, breezy, and low humidity conditions. This should make it a spectacular day to be outside. Highs will top out in the lower 80s.

Twins Continue Hot Streak, Make History in Win Against Guardians
The three-game series between the Cleveland Guardians and the Minnesota Twins has been a strange one, to say the least. In a make-up game delayed from the night of Monday, May 19, due to inclement weather, the Guardians and Twins resumed the same game on Wednesday. Advertisement As the bad weather persisted into Tuesday, that game was also rescheduled to Wednesday afternoon and started just 30 minutes after the conclusion of the resumed game. With all of this being said, the conclusion of the first make-up game had an exciting ending with some history that was made. Just a month ago, Minnesota had a record of 7-15 and were struggling to put wins together. Although there's a lot of season left, it seems that the Twins have found their rhythm and will look to continue to win games.
