Giorgi Mamardashvili learning from Alisson, embracing Liverpool goalkeeping ‘challenge'

New York Times20 hours ago
Giorgi Mamardashvili believes he will develop as a goalkeeper from working with Alisson as he vowed to embrace the challenge of trying to become Liverpool No 1.
The Georgia international officially joined the Premier League champions at the start of July — nearly a year after Liverpool struck a £29million deal with Valencia.

Mamardashvili has replaced Caoimhin Kelleher, who was sold to Brentford for a fee rising to £18m last month, and the new arrival may have to be patient with Alisson so well established in Arne Slot's side.
'What I can tell about Ali, he's one of the best goalkeepers in the world right now and I am so happy to work with him,' he told the club's website.
'I can't wait to start to work with him and learn from him. Of course it will be a challenge. I like challenges and I'm here to just give my best and help the team.
'It's a huge moment for me because joining a club like Liverpool. It's not only a transfer, it's a dream come true for me. I feel ready, motivated and proud. I'm here in the biggest club in Premier League history.
'When I was a child I always watched some videos on YouTube of goalkeepers, and I remember some Liverpool goalkeepers as well. I remember Jerzy Dudek and then Pepe Reina and now Alisson. Liverpool has a big goalkeeper legacy and I want to try to write my own chapter.'
With Alisson absent, Mamardashvili played the first half of Sunday's 3-1 friendly win over Preston North End at Deepdale. It was an emotionally charged occasion following the recent deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva in a car accident in Spain.
'When I first arrived here it was a really tough moment for the club,' he added.
'But everyone here has supported each other and I see here is like a big family. We are not just a team, we are people who care about each other.
'I didn't have a chance to play with him (Jota) but I played against him at Euro 2024, so I saw how amazing he was. I saw stories and messages and the love from people around him.'

Kolisi returns as Springboks select uncapped front row to tackle Georgia

Boan Venter, Marnus van der Merwe and Neethling Fouche will all make their Test debuts for the Springboks against Georgia. Regular captain Siya Kolisi is also back to lead the team for the first time this year. After Saturday's Test, the Boks will have employed 46 players so far this season. The Springboks have selected an uncapped starting front row for Saturday's Test against Georgia in Nelspruit. Boan Venter, Marnus van der Merwe and Neethling Fouche will make their Test debuts as regular captain Siya Kolisi returns to lead the Boks for the first time this year. READ | Bok No 8 Jasper Wiese cops hefty ban for headbutt Venter, who plays for Edinburgh in Scotland, was called into the Bok squad in June as injury cover at prop. Van der Merwe and Fouche had their first taste of Springbok rugby in the non-capped game against the Barbarians in Cape Town last month. 'We wanted to make sure that Siya is 100% fit before selecting him, so it's great to have him back in the squad, while Boan, Marnus and Neethling have been training hard and deserve their chance,' said Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus 'Marnus and Neethling played against the Barbarians, so they have an idea of what international rugby is about, while Boan has shown great potential at club level and with the squad in the last few weeks, and we are looking forward to seeing him play. 'Building squad depth has been one of our pillars as a squad since 2018, and they are all undoubtedly ready to make the step-up.' The uncapped trio will increase the number of newly capped players this season to seven after Vincent Tshituka (flanker), Cobus Wiese (loose forward), Asenathi Ntlabakanye (prop), and Ethan Hooker (utility back) all made their Test debuts against Italy. Only five players who started against Italy last weekend - and eight in the match-day 23 - have retained their places. The five players who retained their places in the starting line-up are Edwill van der Merwe (wing), Canan Moodie (utility back), Grant Williams (scrumhalf), Pieter-Steph du Toit (flank) and Ruan Nortje (lock), while Wiese, who replaces his suspended brother Jasper as eighth man, and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu (flyhalf) are promoted from the bench to starting team. The inclusion of Kolisi and Venter in the squad increases the size of the group used by Erasmus so far this season to 46 players. Up front, Eben Etzebeth also returns at lock to partner Ruan Nortje, while Erasmus opted for a five-three forwards-backs split on the bench. Springbok team to face Georgia: 15 Aphelele Fassi, 14 Edwill van der Merwe, 13 Canan Moodie, 12 Damian de Allende, 11 Kurt-Lee Arendse, 10 Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, 9 Grant Williams, 8 Cobus Wiese, 7 Pieter-Steph du Toit, 6 Siya Kolisi (captain), 5 Ruan Nortje, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Neethling Fouche, 2 Marnus van der Merwe, 1 Boan Venter Substitutes: 16 Bongi Mbonambi, 17 Thomas du Toit, 18 Vincent Koch, 19 RG Snyman, 20 Kwagga Smith, 21 Faf de Klerk, 22 Handre Pollard, 23 Damian Willemse Regarding his team selections, Erasmus elaborated: 'We know how passionate and intense this Georgian side is, and they will be determined to make a strong statement, so we selected some experienced players who we would like to get more game time before the Rugby Championship, and a few of the younger players, who have put up their hands another run, so we are pleased with the balance we have in this group.' The Springboks have won their last two matches against Georgia - the last of which was in 2021 before the British & Irish Lions series - but the world champions are not underestimating their opponents. 'Georgia are a tough outfit, and they pride themselves on their physicality and brute force in the collisions, so the set pieces, mauls, and breakdowns will be key areas,' warned Erasmus. 'They also have quality backline players to round off their team, so we need to be sharp in all the departments of our game to ensure that we continue to lift our standards, build momentum, and get the desired result.' Saturday's match at Mbombela Stadium kicks off at 17:10.

How did Twins star Byron Buxton do in the Home Run Derby?

Minnesota Twins All-Star Byron Buxton had a respectable showing in Monday night's Home Run Derby, but ultimately couldn't blast enough dingers to bring home the top prize. Buxton hit 20 homers in the first round to advance to the semifinals, where he lost 8-7 to the Tampa Bay Rays' Junior Caminero. Buxton's longest shot of the night was 466 feet. Caminero lost in the final round to the Seattle Mariners' Cal Raleigh, who goes by the nickname Big Dumper. The derby was Buxton's first, and it was played in his home state of Georgia. It came just days after he hit for the cycle in a 12-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 31-year-old Buxton is having a career year in his second All-Star season. Through 78 games, he's batting .289 with an on-base plus slugging percentage of .925. He's hit 21 homers on the season, already the second-highest total of his career. His offensive wins above replacement of 3.9 is good for sixth in MLB. Pitcher Joe Ryan is the Twins' only other All-Star this season. The Twins entered the All-Star break at 47-49, 11.5 games behind the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central. Minnesota Twins

Manchester United target Eivind Helland available for peanuts

Manchester United are currently focusing all their energy on signing Bryan Mbeumo but the club's scouting department is following a number of players. United have been chasing Mbeumo since the start of the summer and convinced the 25-year-old to join their project early in June. Advertisement However, on Tuesday, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming the Red Devils and Brentford remain millions of pounds apart in the negotiation for the transfer of the right winger. Manchester United prioritising strengthening attack According to The Athletic, United are 'being patient' in the hope that Brentford ease on their valuation, as the Cameroonian is determined to move to Old Trafford. However, Ineos' approach has left Ruben Amorim in a tricky position heading into the pre-season tour. Significant changes were expected all across the pitch on the back of an abysmal campaign. Still, United have only added Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha to their ranks this summer. Diego León has also joined the first team squad but his signing was sealed in January. Advertisement Manchester United interested in Helland Regardless of Ineos' priority, United's scouting department are monitoring several players to improve other areas of the squad. The Athletic reveal that United sent a scout to watch SK Brann prodigy Eivind Helland against Viking on Sunday. Brann won the fixture 3-1. The 6ft 5in defender is known for his imposing style of play and agility which allow him to dominate both aerial and ground duals. The captain of Norway's under-21s is capable of playing as a centre-back and right-back. He has made 37 appearances for the Norwegian outfit so far. The 20-year-old has around 18 months left to run on his contract. It is claimed he would cost around €7million to €8m. Advertisement Since United are likely to spend the majority of their budget on attackers, a reasonably priced talent like Helland could prove to be a shrewd buy for the Mancunians. United are also thought to be monitoring Botafogo goalkeeper John Victor, who is viewed as Altay Bayindir's possible replacement. Featured image Alex Livesey via Getty Images Follow us on Bluesky: @
