Tanjong Katong sinkhole-afflicted road to reopen today, authorities reassure public that it's safe
Singapore's Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced this today on Facebook clarifying that the portion from ECP to Mountbatten Road will be open to traffic from noon today but the section from Mountbatten Road to ECP will only be open on August 4 from 5am.
LTA along with Singapore's national water agency PUB confirmed they have completed repair works as well as a safety assessment of the affected area as well as the surrounding roads.
Done in consultation with the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), the checks have found the area safe for the public.
Works however will continue nearby as road reinstatement activities are currently under way, including to repair utilities damaged after the road's reopening.
Singapore Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu said in a Facebook post yesterday: 'I have been assured that the road will be safe for public use.'
Fu also stated that the authorities had conducted proper assessment and checks of the area, with LTA also it had found no voids or anomalies in the area.
The sinkhole, which opened up near a PUB sewer-laying construction site on July 26, swallowed a car and injured its driver, who was later hospitalised with muscular pain.

JPJ issues 1,489 summonses in VEP enforcement operation
JOHOR BAHRU: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) issued 1,489 summonses totalling RM445,800 during a Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) enforcement operation at the Malaysia-Singapore border from July 1 to August 2. JPJ senior director of Enforcement Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said 14,379 Singapore-registered vehicles were inspected near the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) and Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB) as well as in Johor Bahru city. 'Of the 1,489 owners or drivers summoned, most failed to install and activate the VEP RFID tag. Many believed enforcement had not yet begun,' he said. One individual initially refused to cooperate but later complied when officers threatened to seize the vehicle. Muhammad Kifli noted that nearly 90% of Singapore-registered private vehicles now have the VEP RFID tag. As of July 31, 277,930 tags have been issued to Singaporean owners. Foreign vehicles without a valid VEP risk a RM300 fine under Section 66H(7) of the Road Transport Act 1987. - Bernama

‘We didn't know': JPJ issues RM445,800 in fines to Singapore vehicles without active VEP tags
JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 4 — The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has reportedly issued RM445,800 in fines from 1,489 summonses issued to Singapore-registered vehicles that failed to install or activate their RFID Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) tags. According to Berita Harian, the summonses were meted out between July 1 and August 3 through enforcement operations targeting foreign vehicles at land border checkpoints between Malaysia and Singapore. JPJ senior enforcement director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan reportedly said that a total of 14,379 Singapore-registered vehicles were inspected. 'The majority of the 1,489 vehicle owners or drivers we have summoned so far gave similar excuses — that they were unaware the Malaysian government had begun enforcement, and thought we were still in the advocacy phase,' he was quoted as saying. Offenders may be fined up to RM300 under Section 66H(7) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Muhammad Kifli reportedly said that nearly 90 per cent of Singaporean private vehicles already have active VEP tags. As of July 31, JPJ had reportedly issued 277,930 RFID VEP tags to Singapore-registered vehicles.
