Caste survey by State govt. essential for assessing socio-economic conditions of various communities: Anbumani
Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) president Anbumani Ramadoss on Thursday said that State governments must conduct a detailed caste survey under the Collection of Statistics Act, 2008 to understand the real socio-economic conditions of each community. He urged the Tamil Nadu government to immediately announce such a survey.
Speaking to reporters in Chennai, Dr. Anbumani welcomed the Centre's announcement of conducting a caste census as part of the upcoming population census. 'This is the first time since Independence that the Centre has come forward to carry out a caste census. It was the BJP government that provided constitutional status to the National Commission for Backward Classes and also formed the Justice G. Rohini Commission for sub-categorisation of Other Backward Classes (OBCs)'
Criticising the Congress for failing to act, Dr. Anbumani said, 'Despite being in power for several years, the Congress did not conduct a caste census. During my tenure as a Cabinet Minister under the United Progressive Alliance, I urged then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and then Home Minister Shivraj Patil to conduct the caste census along with the 2011 population census, but the Congress government failed to do so.'
He added that it would take four to five years to compile and publish the results of the caste census, which would only reveal the headcount of each community. While a caste survey by State governments under the Collection of Statistics Act, 2008, could provide a complete understanding of the socio-economic status of different communities.
'To protect the 69% reservation currently in place in Tamil Nadu, a caste survey is essential, and only the State government can conduct it. Through such a survey, we can obtain detailed data on education, economic conditions, and employment opportunities of various communities. The State government can then formulate people-centric welfare schemes based on this data. It is crucial to immediately announce a caste survey to assess how the 69% reservation is benefiting the 377 communities,' he added.

Bengaluru, June 8 (UNI) BJP leader Anil K Antony on Sunday launched a pointed attack on the Congress party, accusing it of derailing India's once-successful system of simultaneous elections for political gain. Supporting the Centre's push for the 'One Nation, One Election' initiative, he said the practice functioned smoothly until it was disrupted by the Congress government under Indira Gandhi after 1967. 'From 1951 to 1967, India conducted Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections together, ensuring stability and good governance,' Antony said at a policy forum here. 'But this changed when Mrs Indira Gandhi came to power. In the following three years, several non-Congress governments were dismissed, and political manipulation led to the collapse of the synchronised election cycle. By the late 1970s, the system had been completely derailed.' Calling this disruption a "self-serving move" by the Congress to retain power, Antony argued that decades of disjointed elections have since burdened the country with administrative delays, fiscal strain, and reduced governance efficiency. He cited the 2023 report of the High-Level Committee chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind, which strongly recommended synchronised elections. 'According to the report, implementing 'One Nation, One Election' can boost India's GDP by 1.5% annually — equivalent to ₹4–7 lakh crore — which is nearly 50% of our healthcare budget and one-third of our education budget,' he said. Antony highlighted the heavy toll of India's year-round election cycle. 'In the last 30 years, there hasn't been a single year without elections. Due to the frequent enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, governance comes to a halt for almost five months every year. State and national leaders are in permanent campaign mode instead of focusing on development.' He said that restoring the synchronised election system is not a political move but a nation-first reform aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of making India a developed nation by 2047. 'This isn't about BJP. Even in 1983, the Election Commission — under a Congress-led government — said India should return to joint elections. Our founding leaders like Atal Bihari Vajpayee and LK Advani supported this idea in the 1980s. It's about bringing back stability,' Antony said. Citing India's rapid rise from a $2 trillion economy in 2014 to the verge of becoming a $5 trillion economy, Antony argued that electoral reforms are essential to sustain and accelerate this growth. 'We are now the fastest-growing digital economy. The startup boom in cities like Bengaluru — from just 500 startups in 2014 to over 1.25 lakh today — shows the kind of momentum we've built. Reforms like One Nation, One Election will ensure that governance keeps pace.' The High-Level Committee's consultations with lakhs of citizens and experts led to an 800-page report submitted to the President of India, affirming the economic, administrative, and democratic benefits of the reform. Among the members were Union Home Minister Amit Shah, former J\\\\\\\\&K CM Ghulam Nabi Azad, and legal luminary Harish Salve. Asserting that the initiative will 'increase democratic participation, improve administrative efficiency, and reduce unnecessary public expenditure,' Antony urged all stakeholders to support the move. 'Synchronised elections will free the government from continuous electoral distraction and unleash the full potential of governance. No demolition threat to slums in Delhi: CM Rekha Gupta
Countering rumours of impending demolition of many slums in the national capital, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday hit out at the previous Aam Aadmi Party and Congress governments for treating residents of these colonies as vote banks and depriving them of basic amenities. Speaking after inaugurating a toilet block in a slum in Haiderpur, CM Gupta assured that no slum will be demolished without first providing permanent housing to its residents. She said that FIRs will be filed and strict action will be taken against those spreading false information about demolitions. She clarified that most anti-encroachment actions are being carried out in compliance with court orders and are targeting illegal occupations that are obstructing traffic or hindering public movement. Talking about slum demolition near Jangpura, she said the action was ordered by the Delhi High Court. "Wherever there are orders of the Court, neither the government nor the administration can do anything. Today, the reality of Madrasi Colony is that it is settled on the banks of the Barapullah drain, and the Court has repeated almost four times that these jhuggis (informal settlements) must be removed so that machines can reach there and cleaning can be done. Otherwise, there are chances of floods in Delhi like in 2023..." she added. The Chief Minister said the previous Arvind Kejriwal government and Sheila Dikshit government did not do any development for residents of slum clusters in Delhi. "The BJP government in Delhi is spending Rs 700 crore on various projects," she added. The Chief Minister emphasised that every slum resident deserves to live with dignity. "It is our responsibility to ensure that they enjoy the same facilities as other citizens of the city," she said. The government's goal is not just redevelopment but also improvement in the standard of living of slum dwellers, she added. On Sunday, she also inaugurated and inspected various development projects in Nehru Camp in Haiderpur, Ekta Camp in Pitampura, and the area near U and V Blocks of JJ Cluster in the Shalimar Bagh Assembly constituency. The Chief Minister also reviewed key works such as laying of pipelines and construction of new roads in these areas. She also announced that a clean and safe parks with swings will be developed especially for the children of slum areas in the city. CM Gupta reiterated her government's commitment to ensuring that every resident of Delhi's slums has access to basic amenities such as clean water, proper roads, public toilets, and parks, so that no citizen is left behind in the journey of development. On this occasion, the Chief Minister inaugurated the construction work of a 24-seater Jan Suvidha Kendra (public convenience centre) at JJ Cluster, Outer Ring Road, No. 26, Nehru Camp in Haiderpur. She said that this Jan Suvidha Kendra will address the long-standing issue of toilet shortage in the area and will particularly benefit women, senior citizens, and children by providing clean and safe facilities.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday responded sharply to Rahul Gandhi 's recent comments about the Election Commission of India ( ECI ), accusing the Congress leader of misunderstanding the people's mood and blaming the wrong institutions. The Commission also reminded that it had already responded to these issues in a detailed reply to the Congress on 24 December 2024, which is available on their website. The Commission added, 'Spreading misinformation shows disrespect to the law and demotivates thousands of polling staff who work tirelessly and transparently.
