Vlahovic misses penalty as Juve suffer shock Coppa Italia exit to Empoli

Reuters26-02-2025
TURIN, Italy, Feb 26 (Reuters) - Empoli beat Juventus 4-2 on penalties to advance to the Coppa Italia semi-finals on Wednesday after a resilient performance helped them hold the defending champions to a 1-1 draw in regular time.
Dusan Vlahovic missed Juve's first attempt from the spot, sending his effort way over the bar before Empoli keeper Devis Vasquez denied Kenan Yildiz and Empoli defender Luca Marianucci sealed the win for the visitors.
Youssef Maleh put Empoli in front after 24 minutes, scoring with a powerful strike from outside the box, before Khephren Thuram levelled for the struggling hosts after the hour mark with a stunning individual effort from a tight angle.
Empoli will face Bologna in a two-legged semi-final in April. Inter Milan and AC Milan will play each other for the other spot in the final.

Federico Chiesa's behaviour in training sums him up as Liverpool fans make observation

Federico Chiesa has been linked with a move away from Liverpool this summer, but the Italian winger continues to give his all in pre-season training, much to the delight of Reds fans Federico Chiesa continues to put in maximum effort during Liverpool training sessions despite speculation linking him with a departure from Anfield this transfer window. Supporters online have commended the Italian for his commitment and spirited attitude. ‌ The winger made the switch to Merseyside last year from Juventus for £12.5million, representing the sole permanent senior acquisition during Arne Slot's inaugural campaign. Chiesa's maiden season in England was unfortunately hampered by fitness problems and limited playing time. ‌ Speculation has consequently intensified this summer, connecting Chiesa with a return to Italy following the arrival of new attacking reinforcements in Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike. However, following glimpses into a recent Reds training session, supporters have been swift to applaud Chiesa for his application. ‌ In footage shared on YouTube showing a Liverpool training session, Chiesa can be observed wholeheartedly taking part in sprint exercises and small-sided games with a beaming smile, which captured supporters' attention in the comments. "Federico Chiesa is the consummate professional," one comment read. "Even with his future at the club still up in the air he is out there giving 100 per cent effort in training with a smile on his face. I just love the guy and want the best for him whenever or wherever he plays." Another posted: "Fede needs to stay, so much to give, he's the only player really we have upfront comfortable on both feet when attacking, which makes him extremely difficult to defend." In a summer of endless transfer talk, Calciomercato claims that Chiesa is keen to stay at Liverpool, but only if he's promised substantial playing time. Should that assurance not materialise, he might look elsewhere, with Napoli, AS Roma, AC Milan, Juventus, Atalanta, Como and Atletico Madrid all reportedly circling. However, manager Slot may have dropped a hint that the Italian is likely to remain at Anfield this transfer window, as he made a point of mentioning Chiesa when discussing his attacking arsenal, reports the Liverpool Echo. ‌ "I think we have a lot of attacking power in our team," Slot declared during his pre- Community Shield press conference. "When I think about Cody Gakpo, Federico Chiesa, Hugo Ekitike, Mo Salah, Jeremie Frimpong who can play as a right-winger, Florian Wirtz who can play as a left-winger. "I already feel I have a lot of attacking options in my current squad. But, as always as a club, we are always looking at the chances in the market but that can also be in the midfield or the last line." When pressed directly about Chiesa's future back in May, following the Italian's solitary league start under his stewardship last season, Slot was adamant the player has a place at Anfield. ‌ "Does he have a future here? Yes, definitely he has, yes," Slot stated. "Definitely. I think everyone playing for us over here has a future over here. Next season, if he comes back completely fit, which he has hardly been for the first half-season but then afterwards he became fitter and fitter. "The next steps should have been playing time, which I couldn't give him. But I can give him playing time in pre-season, so he can build himself up and then go even further."

Piers Morgan releases statement about Jake Paul and ‘staged' career after boxer hires lawyer to fight ‘fix' claims

Paul's manager has warned against defamation in recent weeks 'SLUG IT OUT' Piers Morgan releases statement about Jake Paul and 'staged' career after boxer hires lawyer to fight 'fix' claims Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) PIERS MORGAN has clarified his comments that Jake Paul's boxing career has been "staged" following news that Paul is taking legal action to fight claims his fights are fixed. Paul, 28, has reportedly taken legal steps to defend his reputation after persistent claims that his fights are rigged. Spiro, who has represented the likes of Elon Musk, Jay-Z and Alec Baldwin, said in a statement: "I've been retained by Mr. Paul to pursue legal redress for the damages he has suffered. "If someone uses their public soapbox to harm him and the sport with lies, there will be consequences." Jake Paul has come under criticism for his boxing career to date and received a slew of claims of "rigged" and "fixed" fights following his unanimous decision win over former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in June. Among those critics was Piers Morgan, who himself used the phrase "boring staged bull***t" to describe Paul's boxing career. Now Morgan has taken to X to release a statement clarifying those comments. He wrote: "I posted a few weeks ago that Jake Paul's boxing career has been 'boring staged bullsh*t.' "What I meant is that his fights have been predominantly against older, past-their-prime opponents, which may be lucrative for both sides, and may have entertainment value. 4 Paul came under fire following his unanimous decision victory over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in June Credit: Getty "But don't reveal how he stacks up against currently ranked boxers and therefore are not a good look for the sport. "I did not intend to suggest that the outcome was predetermined and certainly didn't mean to suggest anything illegal. Former world champ fears for Jake Paul's health amid Anthony Joshua fight talks "But if reports are correct that Jake is now in negotiations to fight Anthony Joshua, that would obviously be a seriously credible bout against one of the best heavyweights in the world. "Jake is welcome to come on Uncensored to discuss this, and verbally slug it out with me, anytime." Paul's manager and co-founder of MVP promotions, Nakisa Bidarian, previously warned that comments labelling Paul's fight as rigged are defamatory and would be met with legal backlash. Speaking on the Ariel Helwani Show, he said: "When you definitively state that Jake is putting on staged or rigged fights, that's just defamation, and you're causing substantial damage to his business, to MVP's business, and something that's 100 per cent not true." Adding: "We're having to have conversations with our partners that are just unjustifiable. Our legal representation is looking at multiple individuals to go after."

How can Aston Villa crack the elite? This man thinks he has the answers

A soft but dogged rain is falling at Bodymoor Heath but Francesco Calvo eschews an umbrella. He's giving a tour of the latest improvements to Aston Villa's training ground and his fine, Italian suit and shoes are getting wet. But no matter. The last thing he wants to be seen as is 'Calvo the foreigner' and he's immersing himself in it all: the club, Birmingham and its people and — now literally — the English weather. He's good company, Aston Villa's president of business operations, newly arrived from Juventus, having also driven revenue at Barcelona and Roma and worked in Formula 1. Certain executives get giddy working in the Premier League and there was one who liked to bustle about in a training top bearing his initials, yet with Calvo, 48, there's no pretence.
