Woodlands Checkpoint extension works to begin in Q3 2025

New Paper04-06-2025

The Woodlands Checkpoint will be redeveloped and extended over the next 10 to 15 years, with the first phase of construction works set to begin in the third quarter of 2025.
In a joint statement on June 4, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority and the Singapore Land Authority said that this will serve as a long-term solution to the chronic congestion at the crossing.
The first phase of redevelopment will involve extending the Woodlands Checkpoint at the Old Woodlands Town Centre.
"This extension will comprise new automated clearance facilities for cargo vehicles, arriving cars, and arriving motorcycles," the statement said.
The BKE will also be extended to create a direct route for vehicles exiting the checkpoint to access the expressway, to reduce traffic congestion on local roads during peak hours, it added.
Daily traveller volume at Woodlands Checkpoint increased by 22 per cent to 327,000 in 2024 from 269,000 in 2023.
A record 376,000 travellers used the checkpoint on Dec 20, 2024, amid the year-end school holidays.
By 2050, the average daily number of travellers passing through the checkpoint is projected to reach 400,000, the authorities noted.
The Government will acquire two separate small land parcels - totalling about 0.79 ha and owned by the Malaysian government - to facilitate the project.
These land parcels are vegetated and not used, the statement said, adding that the SLA has gazetted the acquisition of the land parcels on June 4.
"SLA and ICA will work closely with the Malaysian Government through the acquisition process," it said.
Subsequent phases of the project will include the building of additional clearance facilities and retrofitting the existing checkpoint.
Once completed, the redevelopment checkpoint will allow ICA to improve clearance efficiency across all transport modes and reduce the average travel time from the current one hour to 15 minutes during peak periods.
Additionally, the authority would also be able to incorporate more automation to increase efficiency, conduct security checks away from the checkpoint's core structure to mitigate security risks and provide holding areas for traffic within the checkpoint, which will reduce congestion at the BKE and along surrounding peripheral roads.
"The redeveloped Woodlands Checkpoint will enhance the immigration clearance experience for travellers crossing the Causeway," the statement said.
"ICA will continue to leverage technology and develop innovative solutions to facilitate cross-border travel and trade, while keeping our borders secure."

Pakistan shuts border with Iran as Tehran trades strikes with Israel

Pakistani Shiite Muslims protesting in Lahore on June 15 against the Israeli air strikes on Iran. PHOTO: EPA-EFE QUETTA, Pakistan - Pakistan has closed all its border crossings with neighbouring Iran for an indefinite period, provincial officials said on June 16 , as Israel and Iran trade intense strikes and threaten further attacks. 'Border facilities in all five districts – Chaghi, Washuk, Panjgur, Kech and Gwadar – have been suspended,' Mr Qadir Bakhsh Pirkani, a senior official in Balochistan province, which borders Iran, told AFP. Crossing into Iran 'has been suspended until further notice', said Mr Atta ul Munim, an official at one of the crossings in Chaghi district. However, there was 'no ban on trade' activities at the border and Pakistani nationals needing to return to their the country from Iran can cross, he added. 'We're expecting around 200 Pakistani students coming today,' Mr Atta said. On June 15 , Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said 450 Pakistani pilgrims were evacuated from Iran, with more to follow, as well as from Iraq – the two countries hosting the holiest sites in Shiite Islam. Pakistan, the only Muslim-majority country with nuclear weapons, said on June 13 it 'stands in solidarity with the Government and the people of Iran' against strikes by Israel, which both Islamabad and Tehran do not recognise. Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Asif on June 16 warned that the world 'should be wary and apprehensive about Israel's nuclear prowess' and accused it of lacking 'any international nuclear discipline'. Israel is the Middle East's only nuclear power, although undeclared. Media reports have said Pakistan may support Tehran if the conflict was to widen, but officials in Islamabad have reiterated that their country is only showing 'moral and diplomatic solidarity'. Predominantly Sunni Pakistan shares a more than 900km border with Shiite-majority Iran. The relationship between the two neighbours has been complex, with Pakistan often wary of US-led sanctions on Tehran and also mindful of its ties with Riyadh, which has repeatedly helped rescue its economy by rolling over overdue debts. Bilateral trade between the two countries stands at around US$3 billion (S$3.8 billion) and officials have vowed to boost it to US$10 billion in the coming years. TotalEnergies raises Malaysian gas stake in partnership with Petronas

[KUALA LUMPUR/PARIS] French energy giant TotalEnergies has acquired further stakes in Malaysian gas assets from the country's national producer Petronas, CEO Patrick Pouyanne said on Monday (Jun 16). The French energy company has been expanding its presence in gas in Asia, where it sees greater potential for sales growth as the European Union seeks to shift energy consumption towards renewables by the middle of the century. Pouyanne said at the Energy Asia conference in Kuala Lumpur the company was announcing a deal to double its gas stake in Malaysia 'because it's just perfectly located to produce energy and to serve the market'. Total will hold new interests in multiple offshore blocks, including a 50 per cent operated stake in blocks SK301b and SK313, where gas discoveries exceeding four trillion cubic feet were made. That gas will be developed to supply Malaysia LNG from 2030, according to a company statement. Petronas and TotalEnergies also signed a strategic cooperation agreement to partner in exploration and production globally. As part of that, Petronas has ceded to Total a 24.5 per cent interest in its Bobara block offshore Indonesia, which the pair will explore for oil. 'Together we will pursue and develop advantaged barrels across Malaysia's and Indonesia's frontier emerging exploration blocks,' Petronas CEO Tan Sri Tengku Taufik said. Last year TotalEnergies acquired 100 per cent of SapuraOMV Upstream, an independent gas producer in Malaysia whose main assets are operating interests in offshore blocks SK408 (40 per cent) and SK310 (30 per cent). The French company also signed liquefied natural gas contracts worth about six million tonnes in 2024, mostly to Asian clients, which Pouyanne on Monday said formed 'the core' of Total's LNG business as sales to Europe diminish over time. Singapore civil servants to receive 0.4-month mid-year bonus with extra payment for junior officers

SINGAPORE: Civil servants in Singapore will receive a 0.4-month mid-year Annual Variable Component (AVC) bonus, the Public Service Division (PSD) announced on 16 June 2025. In addition, junior-grade officers will be given a one-time payment of up to S$400. The bonus amount follows close consultation with public sector unions and reflects the current economic performance and labour market outlook. Civil servants in grades equivalent to MX13(I) and MX14 will receive an additional one-time payment of S$250. Those in lower grades—MX15, MX16, and the Operations Support Scheme—will receive a higher one-time payment of S$400. The PSD stated that these figures were decided based on Singapore's first quarter economic performance and the anticipated challenges for the rest of 2025. Singapore's economy expanded by 3.9 per cent in the first quarter on a year-on-year basis. However, the Ministry of Trade and Industry has kept its GDP growth forecast for the year at between 0.0 and 2.0 per cent. This cautious outlook is attributed to continued global economic uncertainty and risks that remain skewed to the downside. On the labour front, advance data from the Ministry of Manpower showed moderating labour demand. Although employment continued to grow in the first quarter of 2025, the pace has slowed, and unemployment rates have edged up slightly since December 2024. The Ministry expects further softening of the labour market due to weakening business sentiment. In this context, the Government's decision to provide a smaller mid-year AVC compared to the previous year reflects a progressive approach. In 2024, civil servants received a mid-year bonus of 0.45 months and a year-end bonus of 1.05 months. By contrast, the 2023 mid-year bonus was 0.3 months. The PSD also noted that the Government and public sector unions will continue to jointly assess economic developments throughout the year. The final decision on the year-end AVC will take into account the guidelines to be issued by the National Wages Council later this year. This monitoring ensures that bonuses are aligned with the broader economic context and provide adequate support, particularly for lower-wage civil servants.
