'As we celebrate ICT Month, we are reminded that technology should be a force for inclusion and empowerment. Through programs like DTP, we are helping ensure that every Filipino, from students to seniors, can participate in the digital economy safely and responsibly,' said Globe Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer Yoly Crisanto.
Globe brought DTP to schools and communities nationwide, including Bulacan State University, Universidad De Manila, Cebu Technological University, and Northern Iloilo State University.
Through workshops facilitated by Globe's volunteer ambassadors, the program delivered age-appropriate, localized content to young learners, educators, and even senior citizens.

Instructure eyes 100% growth in PH market in next 5 years

Education technology ecosystem developer Instructure Holdings Inc. is optimistic to grow its Philippine business by at least 100% in the next five years, with the firm investing in a new office in the country amid its growing user base. According to Instructure managing director for Asia-Pacific Harrison Kelly, the company posted 100% growth in its number of its customers and students from 2020 to 2025, which it is looking to sustain from 2025 to 2030. "We are hugely supportive of this market and we think there is going to be significant uptake of digital model learning technologies, and we're humbled to be able to be a part of that," he told GMA News Online in an interview in the company's new office space in Quezon City. "We look forward to continued growth in the same rate that we've seen since 2020, if not more, and we can't wait to see what that means not only for institutions and education, but also for how we're helping supporting the job market, how we're thinking about digital literacy, the digital infrastructure that we're investing in here, and at the core of that is Filipinos. We're very happy with that," he added. Kelly did not provide absolute figures for the current customer base of the company. With Instructure's Asia-Pacific headquarters located in Sydney, Australia and its main office in Salt Lake City, Utah, the company deemed it fit to establish an office in the Philippines, after launching operations in the country in 2017. "We have opened and invested in this office because we know that this is the next chapter of our growth," Kelly said, noting that the company currently has a workforce of 150 in the Philippines, with expansions planned out that would be commensurate to the growth in the market. "One of the reasons in which we've invested in this market is because we believe that our mission and how we've anticipated the future is really aligned with what DepEd (Department of Education) and CHED (Commission on Higher Education) are doing," he added. The Philippine office also comes as the country is said to be Instructure's top market in the region. It is set to strengthen the company's global 24/7 support model for educators and institutions for its flagship product Canvas learning management system (LMS). "We are establishing a formal presence in the Philippines to better serve the unique needs of our growing customer base," Kelly said. Based on the Instructure's 2025 State of Higher Education - Philippines Report, 83% of educators in the country prioritze lifelong learning for students, but 93% agreed that an improvement in technologies and infrastructure would ease the implementation of lifelong learning initiatives. Instructure's Canvas is being used in top-rated universities in the Philippines, including the Ateneo de Manila University, the De La Salle University, and the University of Santo Tomas. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

Life insurer Singlife says over 1 million policies issued

Digital life insurer Singlife Philippines has crossed a major milestone with more than one million policies issued. In a press release issued Thursday, Singlife said it has paid out more than P100 million in claims since the company's launch in 2020. Singlife said the achievement comes as the company deepens its foothold in the local market through its mobile-first platform and customer-centric innovations. 'We didn't build Singlife to follow the old playbook—we built it for a digital world,' said CEO Lester Cruz. 'We anticipated a shift where Filipinos would want financial protection that's on-demand, transparent, and completely in their control. These numbers prove that this model doesn't just work—it's what this generation has been waiting for,' he added. Part of Singlife's growth was its Plan & Protect app, which was launched in 2023 as the country's first fully digital, end-to-end insurance platform. Since then, the app has amassed 1.4 million installs and facilitated over 45,000 policy issuances—without the need for physical paperwork or traditional agents. The insurance company also reported a sevenfold year-on-year growth in app-driven business, now accounting for the majority of its new premiums. — Ted Cordero/BM, GMA Integrated News

DOST: Local efforts, innovations key in boosting disaster resilience

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) highlighted the pivotal role played by local communities and innovations in promoting disaster resilience in the country. DOST Secretary Renato Solidum said that a 'smarter and more resilient Luzon' would require a better understanding of local information and technology, empowerment of local minds, and support for local solutions for resilience. "We must shift from responding to disasters to reducing risks, managing vulnerabilities, and increasing capacities - involving all sectors, government, non-government, private industry and all Filipino general public,' Solidum said during the Handa Pilipinas sa Bagong Pilipinas 2025 opening ceremony in Baguio City on Thursday. 'When local minds are informed, empowered, and equipped, they become heroes of their own stories of resilience,' added Solidum. The Secretary also recalled the call of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. during the 4th State of the Nation Address (SONA) to 'embrace the principle of continuous improvement' in terms of responding to risks and hazards. Technology and tools Solidum, meanwhile, noted the developments of technology and tools to help communities prepare better, such as the GeoRiskPH, early landslide warning system Dynaslope, and agricultural sustainability project Smarter Approaches to Reinvigorate Agriculture as an Industry in the Philippines (SARAI). He also shared that initiatives and projects have been developed by local innovators and teams to further aid local disaster response efforts. 'Let me emphasize this clearly, technology alone is not enough… Empowering local minds and recognizing that our people are not just beneficiaries, but also powerful agents of innovation,' said Solidum. 'These innovations remind us of a critical truth: communities are not just recipients, they can be co-creators of solutions… When we invest in local capacity, we unlock innovation. When we empower our citizens with knowledge, they become not only recipients of solutions but creators of change,' he added. Baguio City Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong, through Vice Mayor Faustino Olowan, welcomed the event in Baguio City and noted that science and innovation were now necessities in responding to hazards, especially in areas such as Baguio City. 'Your theme for this year's celebration echoes with our aspirations as a city and as a nation. In this era of increasing climate threats, environmental uncertainties, and fast-evolving challenges, science and innovation are no longer optional. They are imperatives for survival and sustainability,' said Olowan. 'As a city that experiences the full force of climate shifts—from landslides to extreme weather—we know how crucial it is to be proactive. We embrace the power of data, the value of research, and the urgency of building smart, sustainable, and disaster-resilient communities,' he added. During the program, DOST-CAR, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PhiVolcs), and the Department of Economy, Planning, and Development (DEPDev) CAR Regional Land Use Committee (RLUC) signed an agreement for the GeoriskPH Adoption by the Cordillera RLUC. DOST also turned over the Handa Pilipinas local caravan guidebook and exhibit modules to local government units in CAR. Handa Pilipinas Luzon Leg 2025 will be held at Newtown Plaza Hotel in Baguio City from August 7 to 9, 2025. The event aims to showcase science, technology, and innovation (STI) for disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation in the Philippines. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
