Instructure eyes 100% growth in PH market in next 5 years
According to Instructure managing director for Asia-Pacific Harrison Kelly, the company posted 100% growth in its number of its customers and students from 2020 to 2025, which it is looking to sustain from 2025 to 2030.
"We are hugely supportive of this market and we think there is going to be significant uptake of digital model learning technologies, and we're humbled to be able to be a part of that," he told GMA News Online in an interview in the company's new office space in Quezon City.
"We look forward to continued growth in the same rate that we've seen since 2020, if not more, and we can't wait to see what that means not only for institutions and education, but also for how we're helping supporting the job market, how we're thinking about digital literacy, the digital infrastructure that we're investing in here, and at the core of that is Filipinos. We're very happy with that," he added.
Kelly did not provide absolute figures for the current customer base of the company.
With Instructure's Asia-Pacific headquarters located in Sydney, Australia and its main office in Salt Lake City, Utah, the company deemed it fit to establish an office in the Philippines, after launching operations in the country in 2017.
"We have opened and invested in this office because we know that this is the next chapter of our growth," Kelly said, noting that the company currently has a workforce of 150 in the Philippines, with expansions planned out that would be commensurate to the growth in the market.
"One of the reasons in which we've invested in this market is because we believe that our mission and how we've anticipated the future is really aligned with what DepEd (Department of Education) and CHED (Commission on Higher Education) are doing," he added.
The Philippine office also comes as the country is said to be Instructure's top market in the region. It is set to strengthen the company's global 24/7 support model for educators and institutions for its flagship product Canvas learning management system (LMS).
"We are establishing a formal presence in the Philippines to better serve the unique needs of our growing customer base," Kelly said.
Based on the Instructure's 2025 State of Higher Education - Philippines Report, 83% of educators in the country prioritze lifelong learning for students, but 93% agreed that an improvement in technologies and infrastructure would ease the implementation of lifelong learning initiatives.
Instructure's Canvas is being used in top-rated universities in the Philippines, including the Ateneo de Manila University, the De La Salle University, and the University of Santo Tomas. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

PH to open Migrant Workers Office in Abuja, Nigeria
The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) will open a Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Abuja, Nigeria to provide support and protection to an estimated 6,000 Filipinos in the West African nation. The DMW made the statement after Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac, along with Philippine envoy to Nigeria Mersole Mellejor, met with Nigeria's Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar and Labor Minister Dr. Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi to discuss enhanced labor cooperation, protection mechanisms, and future labor market opportunities. 'The establishment of the MWO in Abuja will not just provide immediate assistance and support to an estimated 6,000 Filipinos in Nigeria, but also to OFWs across 12 other West and Central African countries covered by the jurisdiction of the Philippine Embassy in Abuja,' said the DMW in a statement. The department added that the establishment of an MWO in Abuja 'will facilitate faster response to labor concerns, provide legal and welfare assistance, and improve coordination with host governments and employers.' Tuggar highlighted opportunities for Filipino professionals in Nigeria's electrical, solar, and emerging industries, while, Dingyadi expressed support for the opening of a labor office at the Philippine embassy in Abuja, and assured to discuss a bilateral labor agreement soon. 'As Africa's most populous nation and largest crude oil and natural gas producer, Nigeria plays a significant role in global energy markets. Its oil wealth has fueled rapid growth in infrastructure, construction, and other industries, creating labor demand that could present new employment opportunities for skilled and semi-skilled Filipino workers,' the DMW said. 'Additionally, the country's expanding agribusiness and services sectors offer further potential for bilateral cooperation in manpower deployment.' — Vince Angelo Ferreras/BM, GMA Integrated News

PH version of AI-powered disaster management platform Spectee Pro launched
A localized version of the Japanese AI software that collects and evaluates crisis data was launched on Thursday. Supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), and Japanese technology firm Spectee Inc., the launch of the Philippine version of Spectee Pro was held in Quezon City. Spectee Pro uses artificial intelligence to collect, analyze, and visualize real-time data on incidents such as earthquakes, fires, floods, and storms from open sources such as social media. Spectee's 24/7 human team assesses the credibility of the information before it can be delivered to customers through dashboard, voice, notification, or email alerts. "While Spectee Pro in Japan primarily uses X (formerly Twitter), the system has been customized for the Philippines, where Facebook is the dominant platform and widely used for real-time information sharing. With the Philippines having one of the largest Facebook [user bases] in the world, this localization effort positions Spectee Pro as a scalable model for other countries across Southeast Asia," said JICA Philippines Office chief representative Baba Takashi. '[With the] combination of artificial intelligence and human intelligence, we deliver only credible information,' added Spectee Pro chief operations officer Satoshi Negoro, as this allows authorities to make faster and better-informed responses. During the launch, the DICT highlighted the role of technology in delivering timely and essential information. "With tools like Spectee AI Pro, every mobile phone becomes a potential first responder, and every online post [becomes] a valuable piece of information that can guide timely action,' said DICT Assistant Secretary Luis Miguel Planas. Spectee Pro was launched in the Philippines in October 2024, with accounts provided to 120 government agencies, private companies, and LGUs—including Metro Manila, Cebu, Davao, Tacloban, Legazpi, and Tagbilaran—for free until May 2026. "Since then, the platform has undergone localization, user testing, and initial rollout to select national agencies and local government units (LGUs), with training and feedback cycles conducted to fine-tune its usability in local disaster scenarios," the JICA Philippines said. A paid program is expected to be introduced in June 2026. —VBL, GMA Integrated News
