Mumbai: Toll has been waived for electric cars and electric buses on Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway, and Atal Setu for the next five years, stated a government resolution (GR) issued on Friday.
The GR also assured toll exemptions 'very soon' for electric vehicles (EVs) on all state highways under Public Works Department (PWD) jurisdiction.
"The decision to gradually provide toll exemptions on state highways will be taken by the steering committee under the chairmanship of the chief secretary. The amount waived as toll exemption will be reimbursed to PWD by the transport department through supplementary provisions," the GR stated.
The GR also emphasised strengthening the EV charging infrastructure across Maharashtra. "This will include setting up charging facilities for EVs at every 25km interval on state and national highways through public-private partnerships," it stated. "Each existing and new fuel station on state and national highways will have at least one EV charging facility. To achieve this, an MoU will be signed between the transport department and oil marketing companies.
Also, each MSRTC bus station/depot will have at least one fast charging station." The GR added that the policy will facilitate the demonstration of sustainable transport models between the cities of Mumbai-Pune and Mumbai-Nagpur.
The Electric Vehicle Policy, 2025 has included trucks, other heavy vehicles, agricultural tractors and harvesters, construction vehicles, ambulances, and solid waste transport vehicles.
It also encourages the conversion of all civic vehicles, including dumper trucks, to electric. The state will provide subsidies for EVs to replace highly polluting heavy diesel vehicles, which pollute approximately 67 times more than cars.
A senior official said Development Control rules will be changed to make it mandatory for all new housing societies/complexes to provide good infrastructure for EV charging and encourage adoption of EVs among the residents.
Old housing societies will also get incentives from power utilities to set up EV charging infrastructure, it is learnt.
The EV charging infrastructure will be mandatory in commercial spaces and govt offices. "We are also coordinating with civic corporations, which should create space for solid waste management dedicated to the disposal of EV batteries," the official said. There will be several fast-charging facilities on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Samruddhi, and other highways.
The new policy also looks at 30% of new EV registrations for all vehicles, 40% for two- and three-wheelers, 30% for cars/SUVs, 50% for aggregator cabs like Ola and Uber, and 15% for private buses in the coming years. "By 2030, we aim to reduce 325 tonnes of PM 2.5 emissions and 1 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector in Maharashtra," a senior official from Mantralaya said.

Need of 6,900 acre land, $9 bn investment by 2030 to set up EV infra: Report

Nearly 6,900 acre of land and $9 billion investments will be required by 2030 for setting up facilities for EV (electric vehicle) manufacturing, lithium-ion battery production and public charging stations , according to Savills India . Real estate consultant Savills India has released report 'Charged for Change: How EVs Are Reshaping Indian Real Estate' stating that the EV market in India has witnessed significant growth in recent years, driven by market forces, government policies, rising environmental concerns, and increasing fuel costs. The government has launched several initiatives to accelerate EV adoption and strengthen the supporting ecosystem. "An investment of $7.5 to 9 billion will be required by 2030, primarily for land acquisition and the development of facilities for EV manufacturing, lithium-ion battery production, and public charging stations," the consultant said. In high-adoption scenario, the required investments will be $9 billion while $7.5 billion will be needed in the case of medium adoption. The report further estimated 5,760 to 6,852 acres of land by 2030 to support EV manufacturing, lithium-ion battery plants, and public charging infrastructure. Srinivas N, Managing Director, Industrial & logistics, Savilla India , said, "Aligning with India's target of achieving 30 per cent EV penetration by 2030, the real estate sector is expected to experience significant growth driven by the rise in EV adoption." The growing demand for EVs will stimulate the need for multiple real estate segments, including industrial and warehousing spaces to support EV and battery manufacturing, EV assembly units, and the storage and distribution of EV components and batteries, he added. Additionally, the expansion of supply chains will increase the demand for strategically located warehouses and logistics parks, said Srinivas. "The government's role with several policies and various initiatives, collectively aims to establish a robust EV ecosystem in the country by fostering innovation, investment and infrastructure development while addressing climate change and energy security concerns," he said. Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), in line with projections by NITI Aayog and the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), estimates cumulative EV sales in India to reach 25.3-31.8 million units by 2030 - an annual average of 4.2 to 5.3 million units. According to Savills, this will drive land requirement of 2,009 to 2,467 acres for manufacturing facilities, with a built-up potential of 43.8 to 53.7 million square feet.

UK new car sales recover in May as EV discounts attract buyers

Britain's new car sales rose from a year earlier in May, marking the second month of recovery in 2025, amid heavy discounting by electric vehicle makers, a report by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) showed on Thursday. Chinese EVs have been rapidly expanding in the European markets by offering deep discounts and forcing other automakers in an intense price war that has strained their profit margins. New car registrations rose 1.6per cent year-over-year to 150,070 units during the month, SMMT said, the best May performance since 2021. Electric vehicles accounted for more than 47per cent of the total car sales in May with battery electric vehicle sales rising 25.8per cent year-over-year. "A return to growth for new car registrations in May is welcome but manufacturer discounting on new products continues to underpin the market, notably for electric vehicles," SMMT chief Mike Hawes said in a statement. The auto industry, already strained by supply chain disruptions and stiff competition, has been forced to cut prices amid brittle consumer sentiment, uncertain global trade policies, and the costly shift away from internal combustion engines. "The continued rise in EV registrations shows a growing consumer appetite for sustainable transport, further fuelled by the government's recent announcement to remove the need for planning applications for at home EV charging installations," said Jamie Hamilton, automotive partner and head of electric vehicles at Deloitte. Tesla sold 2,016 cars in the UK during the month, a 36.04per cent decline year-over-year, according to SMMT. Data published earlier this week by research group New AutoMotive showed a bigger 45per cent drop in the automaker's UK sales.

NTPC Launches 6th Edition Of Girl Empowerment Mission

NTPC Limited, India's largest power utility, has launched the 6th edition of its flagship Corporate Social Responsibility programme, Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM-2025). This year, the summer workshop is being conducted across 41 NTPC power stations in 17 states, aiming to empower over 2,600 girls from underprivileged communities living near these plants. The initiative supports the government's Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign and focuses on providing girls with opportunities for overall development. At the end of the programme, around 10 per cent of participants will be enrolled in NTPC-run schools, where they will receive support for continuing their high school education. GEM is a residential, month-long programme held during the summer holidays. It offers a well-rounded curriculum that includes academic subjects such as Hindi or the local language, English, Mathematics, and Environmental Science. Participants also receive practical training in English communication, computer basics, health and hygiene, safety, yoga, fitness, dance, theatre, sports, and public speaking. The programme also includes industrial visits to NTPC facilities, giving the girls exposure to real workplaces and career opportunities. Motivational lectures by speakers are also conducted. Since it began as a pilot in 2018 with 392 girls at three locations, GEM has grown into a major national initiative, benefiting over 12,700 girls so far. The mission is to help girls develop essential life skills and create a supportive environment where they can thrive. Many past participants have reported increased confidence, independence, and a strong "can-do" attitude after attending the programme. GEM helps them discover their interests and develop skills to face future challenges. NTPC Limited (formerly known as National Thermal Power Corporation Limited) is India's largest integrated power company. It is a government-owned enterprise under the Ministry of Power, responsible for generating electricity and running power plants across the country. NTPC produces electricity primarily through thermal power plants (using coal, gas, and other fuels), but it is also expanding into renewable energy sources like solar and hydro power. Through GEM, NTPC aims to empower young girls with the motivation and capabilities to become leaders who will positively impact their families, communities, and the nation as a whole.
