Bihar police lathi charge on protesting Jan Suraaj workers in Patna, many get injured

The Hindu23-07-2025
Police lathi charged on the protesting Jan Suraaj party workers who were on their way to gherao the ongoing Monsoon Session of Bihar Vidhan Sabha on Wednesday (July 23, 2025). In the scuffle between the police and party workers, many got seriously injured.
Jan Suraaj party was protesting against the government in support of their demands including alleged corruption in land survey, Dalit families not getting three decimal of land and 94 lakh poor families not getting ₹2 lakh for employment despite government announcement.
As planned, the party workers were not allowed to enter the road which was leading towards the Assembly building. They tried their best from 11 a.m. when the Assembly proceedings began but everywhere there was heavy deputation of the police force.
Holding placards, banners and posters, the party workers gathered at Patel Chowk near Chitkohra Bridge. Even Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor also reached near the protest site.
When the police tried to stop them, party workers including Mr. Kishore sat on a dharna on the road itself after a scuffle.
The police tried hard to remove the workers and when they tried to break the police barricading and move towards the Assembly, the police responded through lathi charge to disperse the protestors.
Many of the party workers received injuries. One party worker was hit on his head.
One party worker was hit on both legs due to which he was unable to walk. Both were rushed to nearby hospitals.
Pointing towards the police, Mr. Kishor said, 'Why did you lathi charge on my party workers? Did any of my party workers pelt stones on any police officer or magistrates, then why do you people lathi charge on them? Do you have the guts to use your lathi on me then I will show what I can do. I will make it difficult for the government to function even for a day.'
When a police officer asked him to leave the place, Mr. Kishor further said, 'Don't show me this police tantrum, I have seen enough of this. For the last two months, we have trying to meet the Chief Minister over our demands but there is no response. We also tried to meet the Governor but ge also did not have time. So, we had no other options except going to Vidhan Sabha.'
Later, a six member delegation led by Jan Suraaj State president Manoj Bharti met Bihar Chief Secretary Amrit Lal Meena to hand over the memorandum of the demands.
Mr. Kishor threatened if the government does not take action on their demands then he will gheraoe the official residence of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar by bringing one lakh people.

Jagdeep Dhankhar Never Let Us Speak, Faced Axe When He Spoke: M Kharge

Former Vice President and Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar would stifle the Opposition's right to speak in the House but himself faced the axe when he began speaking freely and refused to align on various issues with the Centre that he strongly once defended, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said on Saturday. Amid growing speculation over the circumstances surrounding the unexpected exit of Mr Dhankhar last month, Mr Kharge, who is the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, alleged the former Rajya Sabha chairman was threatened and pressured to withdraw a motion by the opposition members against Justice Yashwant Varma. "He was told to either withdraw the motion or resign. He resigned," Mr Kharge said. The Congress President recalled how the Opposition was allegedly not allowed to speak during House proceedings during Mr Dhankhar's term and one of the MPs was suspended for seven months in 2023. "The previous Vice President did not allow us to speak. He used to suspend us; one of our women MPs was suspended for seven months," he said, referring to Congress MP Rajani Ashokrao Patil, who was suspended during the Budget session in 2023 for allegedly videographing House proceedings and sharing it on social media in violation of rules. Her suspension was revoked in August that year. "But when he (Mr Dhankar) started speaking freely, started talking about rules, started talking about the action against Allahabad High Court judge Yashwant Verma, then he was threatened, pressure was put on him to withdraw the motion," he said. He was speaking at the party's day-long conclave, "Constitutional Challenges: Perspectives and Pathways", when he made the remarks. Opposition parties in the past alleged that they were not being allowed to speak and accused Mr Dhankhar of impartiality during House proceedings. On July 21, Mr Dhankhar stepped down as Vice President, a little more than two years ahead of the end of his tenure. His term was to end on August 10, 2027. Officially, he cited medical reasons for his exit but sources earlier hinted at a deeper unease, possibly even a breakdown of trust between him and the Centre that he once strongly defended. The tipping point, the sources said, came when Mr Dhankhar refused to align with the government's stand on the impeachment of Justice Yashwant Varma. NDTV earlier reported that ministers met Mr Dhankhar multiple times just days before the Monsoon Session, urging him not to go ahead with the Opposition-backed motion against Mr Varma, informing him very clearly that Lok Sabha will initiate it and he must instead focus on putting the matter of the impeachment of Justice Shekhar Yadav of the Allahabad High Court to end. The election for the post of Vice President will be held on September 9, the Election Commission announced on Friday. The notification for the election, which is being necessitated following Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar's sudden exit last month, will be issued on August 7 and the last date for filing nomination papers will be August 21. The results of the election will be announced on the polling day -- September 9 -- itself, the polling body said.

Rahul, Congress trying to defame constitutional institutions: Law minister Meghwal

NEW DELHI: Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal has said that Rahul Gandhi should present his grievances about the polling process before the Election Commission, as he accused the Congress MP and his party of overlooking facts and defaming the constitutional institutions of the country. In an interview with PTI Videos, Meghwal said while the government is constantly requesting the Opposition to let the Parliament function smoothly, the aim of the Congress and its leader in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is beyond understanding. Responding to a question on Rahul Gandhi's demand for a discussion in Parliament on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, Meghwal said, "I think the Opposition should look at the precedent of former Lok Sabha speaker Balram Jakhar in this regard." "Jakhar had turned down a demand for a discussion in the House on the Election Commission's functioning given that the poll panel is conceived as an independent entity. It is on record, so they better check it and then talk," Meghwal said. On Goa government's renewed push for a Bill to reserve Assembly seats for Scheduled Tribes in the state, Meghwal said, "The population of Scheduled Tribes has increased in Goa but currently there is not a single MLA from the community in the state Assembly. Under the Bill which we are bringing, seats for the ST category will increase in the Assembly." "We are talking about the interests of the ST community, for which we are bringing the Bill. But the Opposition, including the Congress, does not want to discuss this issue. Their objective is not understandable," he added. Asked about the objections raised by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and leaders of some opposition parties on CISF deployment in Rajya Sabha's Well, Meghwal, who is also the minister of state for parliamentary affairs, said an incident had happened in the Lok Sabha where two men jumped off the visitors' gallery. "This was a decision taken by the Lok Sabha speaker and Rajya Sabha chairman. What does the government has to do with it? They (Opposition) should talk to the Chair about this," Meghwal said. There was a major security breach during Zero Hour in Lok Sabha in December 2023 when two men, both carrying canisters emitting yellow smoke, jumped off the visitors' gallery and ran into the Lok Sabha chamber. Asked about the status of the ongoing process regarding the removal of Justice Yashwant Verma over the alleged recovery of a large sum of unaccounted cash from his official residence in Delhi, the law minister said the matter is pending with the Lok Sabha speaker.

Dhankhar raises eyebrows as he leaves office; Trump slaps 'friend' Modi's India with 25% tariffs

Hello readers! We are back with a new edition of DH Political Theatre. The previous week witnessed debates and chaos in the Parliament as the Monsoon Session kickstarted with the much awaited discussion on Operation Sindoor, giving a chance to the Opposition to bombard the government with even more questions. The Opposition also took on the Modi govt on the US tariff row, indicating it to be the start of "bure din" as 25 per cent US tariffs came into effect for India. Let's dive in deeper and see what else happened in India this on Operation Sindoor, and the unanswered questions .Home Minister Amit Shah announced in Lok Sabha the killings of three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) 'A-category' terrorists who carried out the Pahalgam attack. In the House, questions were raised by the Opposition regarding the silence on why Operation Sindoor was stopped midway. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra slammed the government for the violence in Manipur, Delhi riots, and Pahalgam, all of which happened under Shah's watch. In his 100-minute reply during the special discussion, the PM put up a brave front by saying India "taught" a lesson to those behind the Pahalgam attack, and stated that no country stopped India from carrying out the operation, hinting at Donald Trump's claims of having brokered the ceasefire. Trump has repeated his claim of ending the conflict between India and Pakistan nearly thirty times by saying he 'helped settle' the tensions using trade as a sharp attack, Rahul Gandhi accused Modi for carrying out Operation Sindoor to protect his "image". He also took a dig at him vis-a-vis Trump, saying, "We can't have a PM who doesn't have the courage to call Trump a liar, who can't use the Army as it is supposed to be."Amid all this, the silence of certain leaders made loud statements. "Maun vrat, maun vrat": Shashi Tharoor said outside the Parliament when asked about participating in the 16-hour special discussion. Tharoor has publicly praised Modi on Operation Sindoor, and participating in the debate would have meant 'attacking the government'. .'Kaun banega next VP?'.After the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, the question on who will be the frontrunners for becoming the next Vice President has become Election Commission has informed that polls to pick the VP will take place on September 9. With that, the I.N.D.I.A. bloc will be exploring a consensus candidate. Dhankhar cited health concerns as the reason for his exit, but Congress senses there is "far more to his totally unexpected resignation than meets the eye", and that there are "deeper reasons" behind the the ruling BJP-led NDA enjoying a majority in the electorate, it is likely to consider probable names soon. The BJP has a large pool of leaders to choose from for the were even speculations among politicians in Kerala that Shashi Tharoor may be chosen by the BJP. However, time will tell if BJP will choose an "outsider" for the crucial Constitutional post..'SIR: Attack on Democracy'.Several Opposition leaders demanded the rollback of Election Commission's voter roll revision in Bihar. The MPs raised slogans and protested against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in SIR as "vote chori", the Opposition protested in both Houses of Parliament against the exercise, alleging that the EC's initiative was aimed at "disenfranchising voters" in Bihar ahead of the Assembly polls. Following this, the Supreme Court said it was overviewing the process of SIR as judicial authority, and would immediately step in if there was mass exclusion of all this, a bizarre event has rattled Bihar's administrative machinery, as a residence certificate was issued to a dog named "Dog Babu".Independent MP Pappu Yadav slammed the administration, and called out on how a dog is getting a residence certificate, while ordinary people cannot get row: 'Bure din for India?'.The United States announced 25 per cent tariff on Indian exports, and signed a trade deal with Pakistan. Trump called India a "friend", however mounted a sharp attack, and discontent over India's ties with Russia. The two countries can can take their "dead economies down together," Trump said. Following the tariff deal, Rahul Gandhi took a jibe at PM Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and claimed everybody except them knows that the Indian economy is "dead". Rahul had said a trade deal with the US will happen and Trump will define it, while "Modi will do what Trump tells him to do".Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav too noted that this is the beginning of "bure din" for India. In the midst of the tariff talks, the White House believes Trump should be awarded the Nobel Prize, as he "ended several conflicts around the world", saying it is well past rekindles 'Dalit CM' debateCongress President Mallikarjun Kharge recalled how he lost the CM's post in 1999 to S M Krishna, which seems to have rekindled the 'Dalit CM' debate within the party's state unit. Deputy CM D K Shivakumar backed Kharge and said that there is nothing wrong if a senior leader like him is expressing his emotions. Kharge's remark sparked a fresh debate on the long-standing demand for a Dalit CM in Karnataka, a hotly debated matter within the Congress party, an issue on which senior leaders and Ministers Parameshwara and H C Mahadevappa have openly spoken in the past. The BJP took no time in picking on Kharge's statement. Attacking the Congress for "tokenism" when it comes to "Dalit empowerment", Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka said, "Every time a Dalit rises in Congress, the Gandhi family ensures he is pulled down."More from KarnatakaRahul Gandhi has the evidence regarding the modus operandi for "vote theft" during last years LS polls, claimed CM Siddaramaiah, adding that Rahul will be in Bengaluru on August 5 to participate in a protest and submit a representation to the EC officials in Karnataka. Deputy CM D K Shivakumar too cited two instance of voter additions during the 2023 Assembly polls. He claimed that Congress wants to "save democracy" and does not want the EC to be a part of the political process. .What happened elsewhere? In a development that took Maharashtra politics by surprise, the Thackeray cousins were seen together at the iconic Matoshree, the home of former Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray. This was a second meet up of Raj and Uddhav in a fortnight's time, intensifying the alliance buzz. Meanwhile in West Bengal, CM Mamata Banerjee led her party to launch a second "Bhasha Andolan" to protest the "linguistic terror" she accused the BJP of unleashing on Bengali-speaking migrant workers in BJP-ruled states. .These were all the political updates of the week.
