‘America's Team' Directors on Filming the '90s Cowboys Doc and Comparisons to ‘The Last Dance'
The series follows the highs and lows of the '90s Cowboys, with owner Jerry Jones at the head and star players in Troy Aikman, Deion Sanders, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin; many of the the breakout players of the time sit down for interviews, along with the Jones family and media personalities Al Michaels, Andrea Kremer and Skip Bayless.

Brothers Chapman and Maclain Way — who were behind sports doc series Untold — direct the series, in what Maclain said 'ended up becoming the project for a lifetime for us' after they were asked by Netflix to be at the helm.
Of getting all of the subjects on board to speak about both the good and bad of that era, Maclain noted, 'We communicated that early on, just like, hey, this team did have, I think it was fair to say, a little bit of a reputation, not only just for how talented they were but also a little bit of the bad boys of the NFL — a lot of suspensions, a lot of arrests, a lot of things like that. And for us, we knew from day one we wanted to tell a full, complete and accurate picture of this whole story, but that doesn't just mean dark times and exposé. We want to celebrate the wins.'
The project has drawn early comparisons to The Last Dance, for a similarly close look at '90s sports superstars. 'We're huge fans of The Last Dance, that was an incredible documentary series. I think this is maybe slightly different in its own way, I think aesthetically it kind of stands on its own, as its own thing,' Chapman responded. 'But we'd love to tap into that cultural zeitgeist, to look back on an iconic '90s sports team and hopefully it'll resonate.'
They also joked that with Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders series America's Sweethearts streaming on Netflix as well, the two may be considered companion pieces: 'That's a great show. This is a little bit of a different look,' Chapman said, as Maclain added, 'A little bit of a different era but there's cheerleaders in our show too!'
Smith and Irvin were also on hand at the premiere, as Smith noted how 'it felt good to relive it because one thing about us, we work so hard, we don't take the time often to reflect. And plus, that was our time, our time has come and gone and it's all about the current Cowboys right now. But this right here gave us a chance to go back and reflect and remind us what we were able to accomplish in a short period of time.'
David Ellison, the brand new owner of Paramount, made an appearance at the event — his first time walking the carpet since his takeover — as Skydance produced the series and the directors called the company 'the best partners that filmmakers can ask for.'
Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria also told the crowd before the screening, 'Back in March of 2023, I was having lunch with David Ellison at the Tower Bar, and he mentioned he had secured the rights to the telling of the Dallas Cowboys. I don't think he got the sentence out before I said, 'Wait, wait, wait, stop, we have to have it no matter what.' And he said, 'No, no, no, I'm telling you I'm getting the deal, I don't have it closed yet.' I was like, 'It doesn't matter, we just have to have it,'' as she's a big Cowboys fan. 'So David thank you for saying yes; Cowboys, too, thank you for saying yes.'

The journalists at CBS News are eager to report out details of what might happen to their own workplace. Staffers at the unit, now part of Paramount Skydance, are worried about the potential for a new round of layoffs, according to three people familiar with the news division, and are also curious about a possible new chapter for 'CBS Evening News,' which has seen its ratings drop noticeably since embracing a new, atypical format. Executives from Skydance signaled earlier this month during a meeting with reporters that they intended to follow through on previously announced plans to cut $2 billion in costs from the company, which has suffered from longer-term downturns in traditional advertising and distribution revenue as one-time TV viewers embrace streaming technology. Jeff Shell, the new president of Skydance, indicated those cuts and reductions should be disclosed by the company's next quarterly report to investors in November. As for 'CBS Evening News,' executives are poised to experiment with a tweak to the current format, which relies on two anchors delivering news side by side. Just last week, Dickerson was on the ground in Alaska as U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met to discuss Russia's ongoing battle with Ukraine. Making use of both anchors in such fashion would put an authoritative person in the field and the studio, this person suggested, while giving the newscast the ability to deliver breaking news at the top of the broadcast. That suggests a new wrinkle in the show's mission. The original concept behind this 'Evening News' iteration was to emphasize more feature and enterprise reporting. In its earliest weeks, even CBS News' Washington bureau veterans tried to examine the effects of Trump-era policies on people in places like Baltimore or Canada. And yet, critics complained that the show was at times giving short shrift to breaking headlines. One of the concepts behind the new 'Evening News' was to adopt some of the spirit of '60,' which generates its own headlines by pursuing stories both tied to headlines and completely disconnected from them. But evening-news audiences, accustomed to a format that has worn well for many decades, didn't bite. Approximately 3.74 million viewers watched 'CBS Evening News' for the five-day period ended August 4, according to Nielsen. ABC's 'World News Tonight,' which leads the category, captured an average of nearly 6.89 million, while NBC's 'NBC Nightly News' won an average of nearly 5.35 million. CBS News executives had hoped their new 'Evening News' might pick up viewers as Tom Llamas picked up the reins at NBC following a decision by Lester Holt to step away from the 'Nightly' role. Instead, the CBS show has lost hundreds of thousands of viewers since moving away from the format that had been anchored by Norah O'Donnell. One potential candidate to take the 'Evening News' reins behind the camera is said to be Kim Harvey, a veteran producer who has worked for CNN, Fox News Channel and MSNBC, along with CBS News. Harvey has logged time working on MSNBC town halls during the run up to the 2016 election, and with anchors that range from Rachel Maddow and Chris Hayes to Bill O'Reilly and Greta Van Susteren. NFL insider Tom Pelissero shared that, after renewed contract negotiations and Hendrickson returning to Bengals practice, the team is now open to trading last season's league-leader in sacks. Peliserro says that no deal is close, but the Bengals have shifted their stance after initially having no interest in moving on from Hendrickson. The Colts have been linked to Hendrickson ever since the situation went sour with his current team. Indy's defensive coordinator, Lou Anarumo, worked with Hendrickson for four seasons, helping him hit the 17.5 sack mark in each of the last two seasons. NFL insider Jordan Schultz shared that Indy is among the teams who have expressed interest in Hendrickson, adding that the Bengals' desired return is not expected to be cheap, asking for at least an 'impact player' as compensation. < This report isn't exactly news when you consider the strength of Anarumo and Hendrickson's partnership on the field. But the Colts have a plethora of pass rushers of their own already who they believe can make an impact, including Kwity Paye, Laiatu Latu and rookie JT Tuimoloau. Still, general manager Chris Ballard tends to be aggressive when pursuing pass rush. Previously in his tenure, he's made trades for franchise cornerstone DeForest Buckner, defensive end Yannick Ngakoue and signing Samson Ebukam as a free agent back in 2023. In the return for Ngakoue, a player requested by then-defensive coordinator Gus Bradley due to schematic familiarity, included a player in cornerback Rock Ya-Sin. So, Ballard is no stranger to being aggressive for a player he wants. But with the depth the Colts currently have on the edge, the price may be a bit too high to go after Hendrickson.
