Child marriage stopped in Kendrapada
Acting on a tip-off from locals, officials from the child development project office (CDPO) and child protection office (CPO), along with police, intervened at the wedding venue.
The bride, daughter of a daily-wage labourer, was found to be underage after document verification.
"We arrived at the scene while wedding preparations were underway and stopped the marriage despite strong protests from both families. The father had agreed to the marriage due to acute poverty," said Kabita Mallick, child protection officer, Mahakalapada block.
The parents of the minor girl provided a written undertaking not to proceed with the marriage until their daughter turns 18. Under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, marriages involving boys under 21 and girls under 18 are punishable with two years of rigorous imprisonment and/or a fine of Rs 1 lakh.
Social worker Naliniprava Tarei condemned the practice, stating, "Child marriage is an appalling practice that robs children of their childhood and binds them to responsibility when they should be in school and enjoying their youth."

Kolkata: A 74-year-old retired Reserve Bank of India (RBI) employee, Onkar Barat, in Baguiati was duped of Rs 5 lakh over five days by fraudsters posing as Mumbai Police officers in a 'digital arrest' scam. The victim was cheated by unknown callers, claiming that an FIR had been lodged against him in Mumbai for allegedly circulating obscene videos. Barat's family lodged a complaint at Baguiati Police Station (PS) only after his daughter intervened and convinced him that he was being defrauded. His daughter stopped him from taking a gold loan to pay the fraudsters further. Cops have started an investigation into the matter. According to the complaint filed on Thursday, the victim, a resident of Anupama Housing Complex on VIP Road, had received a call from a number claiming to be from the telecom department on Aug 8. "The caller warned him that his phone would be disconnected within two hours. The fraudsters sent him forged documents purportedly from the Supreme Court, Reserve Bank of India, Enforcement Directorate, and Mumbai Police, all naming him as an accused. They also conducted video calls through WhatsApp, displaying fake police IDs and impersonating senior officers. Frightened over the threats against his family, Barat transferred the amount on Aug 12 to an account of a nationalised bank. The account belongs to a company registered as Om Namah Shivya Fishers at Versova, Mumbai. The fraudsters then instructed him to arrange additional funds by taking a gold loan. The man visited the Teghoria branch of a nationalised bank on Aug 13. The frauds also pressed him to borrow from a private lender. but the delay in appraisal led the fraudsters to press him to approach a private lender. At this point, his daughter—who was in Manali—stepped in. Cops said the fraudsters had access to his personal documents. "We are coordinating with cybercrime units and the concerned bank to trace the beneficiaries and block further fraudulent transactions," the officer added. Spike in job fraud: Police register five new cases
Thiruvananthapuram: In the recent times, there has been a rise in number of people being scammed out of lakhs of rupees with false promises of jobs in the govt and private sectors, as well as abroad. In the past 24 hours alone, five new cases have been registered across four police stations in the city. According to police, more than 30 such cases were registered in the district in the past 30 days. In some cases, the victims were offered jobs in Pollution Control Board, Indian Railways, Vikram Sarabhai Space Center, Isro and abroad. Peroorkada, Museum, Kazhakkoottam, and Cantonment police have registered the five new cases against two agencies and several other people under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 318 (2) for cheating and 319 (4) for criminal breach of trust. Peroorkada police registered two cases against an agency operating at Kowdiar for defrauding Rs 3 lakh each from two men by offering jobs in a toy factory in Hungary. Museum police booked a Madavoor-based man for cheating a 31-year-old Uchakada native by taking of Rs 3.9 lakh by offering a job in Hungary. Cantonment police booked the accused, who was running an office at Amaravila, in the case. Recently, 11 people residing in the Poonthura police station limits were cheated out of lakhs of rupees by two men offering jobs on a contract basis at Secretariat. Bike-borne men fire 2 dozen rounds at Elvish's house
Gurgaon: Bike-borne assailants fired over two dozen rounds at YouTuber Elvish Yadav's house in Sector 57 early on Sunday. CCTV footage showed two men discharging their weapons at the three-storey house and unleashing a barrage of gunfire as a third accomplice waited on a bike around 5.30am. Elvish, police said, is out of town on an assignment. Some of his family members and a caretaker were inside the house during the attack, but they escaped unhurt. The house, however, bore the brunt of the gunfire, with bullet holes and shattered glass visible on the ground and first floors, and its walls. The Himanshu Bhau gang claimed responsibility for the attack, accusing Elvish of promoting betting apps that they alleged had "ruined many households". "The firing that took place today at Elvish Yadav's house was done by Neeraj Faridpur and Bhau Ritoliya. With this, today we have introduced ourselves... He (Elvish) has ruined many homes by promoting betting…," the gang's social media post read.
