Child marriage stopped in Kendrapada

Kendrapada: Local authorities prevented the marriage of a 16-year-old dalit girl to a 23-year-old youth at Deolapada village in Mahakalapada block on Thursday evening. Acting on a tip-off from locals, officials from the child development project office (CDPO) and child protection office (CPO), along with police, intervened at the wedding venue. The bride, daughter of a daily-wage labourer, was found to be underage after document verification. "We arrived at the scene while wedding preparations were underway and stopped the marriage despite strong protests from both families. The father had agreed to the marriage due to acute poverty," said Kabita Mallick, child protection officer, Mahakalapada block. The parents of the minor girl provided a written undertaking not to proceed with the marriage until their daughter turns 18. Under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, marriages involving boys under 21 and girls under 18 are punishable with two years of rigorous imprisonment and/or a fine of Rs 1 lakh. Social worker Naliniprava Tarei condemned the practice, stating, "Child marriage is an appalling practice that robs children of their childhood and binds them to responsibility when they should be in school and enjoying their youth."

7k anganwadis to be on Raj Poshan portal

Jaipur: For better and real-time monitoring of schemes, Integrated Child Development Services ( ICDS ) department Monday generated a request for the transfer of over 7,000 anganwadi centres to the Raj Poshan portal by aligning the jurisdiction of child development programme officers with panchayat samitis. Officials said that with the transfers, the exchange of data between the panchayat samiti, child development programme officer, and other departments at the block level will be simple and accurate. ICDS director OP Bunkar said, "The demand to shift 7,024 anganwadi centres has been generated for 138 projects, whose status has been shared with CDPO. This will enable better coordination due to same demarcation of projects with Panchayat Samiti." Officials said that by transferring these anganwadi centres to the Raj Poshan Portal, panchayat samiti-wise data will be available for 363 projects and 2,236 sectors from 41 districts. The director has further instructed officials to ensure that the transfer is completed by Tuesday, after which district-wise review meetings will be conducted. Officials added that aligning the jurisdictions will help in better implementation of schemes operated by different departments in collaboration with ICDS.

CDPO, anganwadi worker trapped by vigilance

Koraput: Vigilance officials arrested Sakuntala Das, the child development project officer (CDPO) in Dasmantpur block and Minati Khosla, an anganwadi worker of Adhamunda anganwadi centre, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 on Friday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Officials said the bribe was sought from a newly-appointed anganwadi helper, who joined an anganwadi centre in Dashmantpur block one-and-a-half months ago. The complainant had reportedly been persistently requesting Das, the drawing and disbursing officer (DDO), for release of her salary. However, Das allegedly demanded Rs 10,000 to open her personal file and initiate the salary process, instructing that the amount be handed over to her associate, Khosla, according to a vigilance release. "Left with no option, the complainant approached vigilance authorities, leading to a trap being laid. The entire bribe amount was seized from the accused," it was further stated in the release. Simultaneous searches are underway at three locations associated with the CDPO and anganwadi worker. A case has been registered at Koraput vigilance police station.
