How India beat China to become the biggest smartphone maker for the US

India has decisively beaten China to become America's largest smartphone supplier for the first time, with one in three smartphones sold in the United States now coming from the country. According to research firm Canalys, India accounted for 44% of US smartphone shipments in the second quarter of 2025, a dramatic surge from just 13% in the same period last year. Meanwhile, China's share plummeted from 61% to 25% over the same timeframe, marking a historic shift in global smartphone supply chains. Apple leads manufacturing exodus from China Apple has emerged as the primary driver behind India's rise as America's top smartphone supplier. The iPhone maker has rapidly scaled up its Indian production capacity as part of its "China Plus One" strategy, and further increased its shipments from India to the US as Trump announced US' trade tariff policies. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Are The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo Data from the US International Trade Commission (USITC) reveals that US smartphone imports from India jumped over three times year-on-year to 21.3 million units between January and May 2025, valued at $9.35 billion. "India became the leading manufacturing hub for smartphones sold in the US for the very first time in Q2 2025, largely driven by Apple's accelerated supply chain shift to India amid an uncertain trade landscape between the US and China," said Sanyam Chaurasia, Principal Analyst at Canalys. Apple now produces approximately 20% of its global iPhone capacity in India, including high-end Pro models of the iPhone 16 series. The volume of made-in-India smartphones grew 240% year-on-year, with Apple CEO Tim Cook confirming that most iPhones sold in the US during the April-June quarter originated from India. Trump's tariff pressure reshapes global supply chains President Trump's tariff policies have been instrumental in accelerating this supply chain reorientation. The administration imposed a 145% cumulative levy on China while granting India a more favorable 26% tariff rate. Trump has repeatedly threatened Apple and other manufacturers with 25% tariffs if they fail to establish US production facilities. "I don't want you building in India," Trump told Apple CEO Tim Cook during a recent conversation, pushing for domestic manufacturing instead. However, the company continues expanding its Indian operations, with contract manufacturer Foxconn announcing a $1.49 billion investment in Tamil Nadu facilities. Trump also extended his warning to Samsung and "anybody that makes that product." But that isn't stopping other manufacturers. Samsung, which primarily manufactures in Vietnam, is also reportedly exploring production shifts to India to mitigate tariff risks. Canalys data shows Vietnam currently holds 30% of the US smartphone import share, while other manufacturers collectively account for the remaining 2%. Google has also reportedly initiated talks with Indian manufacturers about shifting Pixel smartphone production for US-bound devices. US' smartphone market growth stagnates Despite the dramatic geographical shift in production, overall US smartphone market growth remained sluggish at just 1% in Q2 2025, totaling 27.1 million units according to Canalys. This tepid expansion reflects weakened consumer demand amid economic pressures. "The market only grew 1% despite vendors frontloading inventory, indicating tepid demand in an increasingly pressured economic environment," noted Runar Bjorhovde, Senior Analyst at Canalys. iPhone shipments declined 11% year-on-year to 13.3 million units, while Samsung grew 38% to 8.3 million units, and Google registered a 13% up tick in shipments year-on-year, closing in at 0.8 million shipments in Q2 2025. Centre to overhaul higher education accreditation: Binary system to replace grading model

Marking five years of the National Education Policy ( NEP ) 2020, Centre is set to announce a major reform in the accreditation system for higher education institutions by shifting to a binary model - 'accredited' or 'not accredited' - replacing the existing multi-tiered grading system. This means institutions will no longer be ranked against each other but assessed against uniform minimum standards. On the anvil is also the launch of a new 'Bharatiya Bhasha' digital tool for direct translations between Indian languages, bypassing English as a mediator. In addition, govt will operationalise a Centre of Excellence in AI in education , as announced in the 2025 Union Budget. Unlike the earlier framework, which graded institutions (A++, A, B, etc.), the new binary system will require institutions to meet basic benchmarks to qualify as 'accredited'. A senior education ministry official said, "The change was designed to address the reluctance of many HEIs to apply for accreditation due to the effort involved and uncertainty about securing a favourable grade." The shift comes in the wake of concerns over credibility and participation in the current accreditation regime, particularly following recent controversies around the functioning of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (Naac). Inconsistent grading patterns and allegations of opacity had drawn criticism from academics and policymakers, prompting a rethink of the process. Live Events Elaborating on the new approach, the official said, "Under the new model, all institutions that meet benchmark standards will be treated equally in the first phase. Grading from 1 to 5 will follow in the second stage, expected to begin in the next five to six months. Institutions will climb the grading ladder sequentially - starting from Grade 1 - based on verified performance data." The data validation will rely on a triangulation method, using multiple sources and tools to ensure accuracy, and will exclude Naac's direct involvement. Instead, only govt agencies and Institutions of National Importance will be engaged for verification, and there will be no physical inspections. The 'Bharatiya Bhasha' digital tool will allow seamless translations between Indian languages without routing through English - for instance, enabling direct translation from Assamese to Tamil. In higher education, the Centre of Excellence in AI in education is set to be formally launched to support research and integration of AI tools in teaching and learning. For school education, announcements are expected on targeted infrastructure improvement and expansion of access, including new buildings for Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalayas, with corresponding funding support. Bank credit to real estate sector nearly doubles to ₹35.4 lakh crore in 4 years: Colliers

Bank credit to the Indian real estate sector stood at Rs 35.4 lakh crore at the end of March 2025, nearly doubling in the last four years, according to Colliers. In a statement on Tuesday, real estate consultant Colliers India said it has assessed the aggregate financials of the top 50 listed real estate companies in India in terms of profitability, gearing and market performance. Explore courses from Top Institutes in Please select course: Select a Course Category "India's real estate sector has continued to exhibit marked improvement in terms of financial health in the post-pandemic era, outperforming other major industries in the economy in terms of critical credit and financial metrics," the consultant said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas Prices In Dubai Might Be More Affordable Than You Think Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Quote Undo Colliers India noted that the sector's access to credit has improved significantly in absolute terms. "Gross bank credit in India has grown significantly, from Rs 109.5 lakh crore in FY21 to Rs 182.4 lakh crore in FY25. Bank credit in the real estate sector has impressively doubled in the same period, from Rs 17.8 lakh crore to Rs 35.4 lakh crore," it said, citing RBI data. Live Events The consultant mentioned that the real estate sector now accounts for almost one-fifth of the bank credit deployment in the country, signalling growing lender confidence in the sector. "Indian real estate sector continues to demonstrate resilience and financial prudence even in the wake of external volatilities," Badal Yagnik, Chief Executive Officer of Colliers India, said. He said there has been a higher proportion of credit rating upgrades during the last fiscal in the real estate sector compared to upward revisions in other economic sectors. "The relatively higher credit quality of real estate loans is well supported by underlying strong demand-supply dynamics across multiple asset classes such as residential, commercial, industrial & warehousing, retail, hospitality etc," Yagnik said. The top 50 listed real estate companies have shown impressive improvements in terms of profitability, cash flow realisation, and balance sheet performance over the last five years. Around 62 per cent of the top 50 listed real estate firms had higher profitability margins at the end of FY25 as compared to the 23 per cent share in FY21. More than 60 per cent of the leading real estate companies in India have comfortable debt levels, which is reflected in the debt-to-equity ratio of less than 0.5 in FY25.
