Home owned by family of UBC and Vancouver Coastal Health embezzler up for sale

The Law Courts building, which is home to B.C. Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal, is seen in Vancouver, on Thursday, Nov. 23, 2023. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Darryl Dyck NORTH VANCOUVER — A real estate listing for a $2 million property in North Vancouver says the home has been excellently maintained and is on an attractive street, but what the description doesn't say is it's a forced sale involving an embezzler and a years-long legal battle. The B.C. government gazette says the sale was ordered when the B.C. Supreme Court sided with the University of British Columbia in a lawsuit filed against the estate of Wanda Moscipan, who worked as an administrator for both the university and the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority between 1997 and 2011. A court ruling last year says Moscipan used her 'substantial administrative autonomy' in her dual role to engage in 'various fraudulent actions,' including forging signatures, stealing from a dormant bank account and paying herself an inflated salary. The court ruling says the woman died in 2012, the year both the university and the health authority filed lawsuits to recover the stolen funds. The gazette listing says a court bailiff was to list the property for sale on Thursday for the recovery of more than $1.5 million against her estate, administered by her husband. The conditions of the property sale say the proceeds will go to pay any outstanding taxes, sheriff's fees, Realtor commissions, with the remainder paid out by the court to the university and the health authority. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 13, 2025.

(SOURCE: Loren Cantor) A man was arrested after stealing a police car from a collision scene in Montreal's Plateau Mont-Royal borough Friday afternoon. Police were called around 4:50 p.m. about a collision between a vehicle and a cyclist at the intersection of du Parc-La Fontaine Avenue and Roy Street. A passerby managed to steal a cruiser as officers intervened and fled driving northbound, hitting several vehicles in his path. A 28-year-old woman who was hit in her car suffered minor injuries to the face and was transported to hospital. The stolen police car was later intercepted at the intersection of Papineau Avenue and Gilford Street after a police chase. In total, two civilian vehicles and five police cars were damaged. The driver, a 32-year-old man, was arrested for driving under the influence and was taken to a detention centre. Police say he is expected to face several other charges. The cyclist was injured but his life is not in danger. Two crime scenes have been set up both on du Parc-La Fontaine Avenue and on Gilford Street. Editor's note: The SPVM previously stated that the man arrested was the driver of the vehicle that struck the cyclist. He is in fact a bystander who is not connected to the collision.

Streets Alive Mission set out to raise $70,000 in just one day on Friday in support of its programs and services. Throughout the day, staff have been at the Christian Credit Union along Mayor Magrath Drive South collecting donations. This is the first year the mission has hosted a Giving Day. Last year, Streets Alive served more than 2,000 people, from providing basic needs to life recovery programming. Two anonymous donors have come forward to match dollars raised. Staff say without the community support, the mission wouldn't be able to operate. 'Each dollar really impacts a life. It really changes a life,' said Jennifer Lepko, Streets Alive Mission chief development officer. 'Streets Alive helps people from the streets and gets them up into recovery, changing their lives. 'It's really a life recovery program and it gets them back into community and fleeing from some of the addiction issues and the poverty that they experience.' The event, sponsored by Save-On-Foods, will take place June 28 from noon to 5 p.m., at the Nicholas Sheran Park picnic shelter in West Lethbridge. The wing-eating contest itself is at will be at 2 p.m. 'How many wings can YOU eat in 60 seconds? Challenge yourself and raise funds for Streets Alive Mission,' Streets Alive says on its website.
