Lost Records: Bloom & Rage (Tape Two) review – love, grief and self-recrimination as the girls reunite
Cleverly, the story is told mostly in flashback, as the characters meet again, decades later, in their long-abandoned home town – they're older, wiser and with new perspectives on what happened to them as teenagers. Lead character Swann, a keen photographer whose video camera provides a key game interface in the first episode, is living a solitary life, while Autumn is still filled with anxiety and Nora is now an influencer. Missing is Kat whose terminal cancer diagnosis obliterates their world at the close of part one.
While the first instalment focused on the excitement and hubris of the teenage characters, this is a much darker story concentrating on the adults as they pick apart their lives. Through dialogue trees and interactive memory segments you help Swann navigate the meeting, as well as moments from the past. There is less of the video camera this time. In the first part, there were multiple occasions where you had to film certain scenes, creating a nicely personal bank of footage which could be edited and reshot. There is also much less actual gameplay: an early scene where you have to pack a box and a later stealth sequence where you sneak into Kat's bedroom are the only real moments of ludic challenge. I missed taking more of an active role.
What you get instead, are some incredibly poignant narrative scenes, as the girls battle with the reality of Kat's diagnosis and the raw ambiguity of their feelings for each other. Two moments stand out especially: Swann and Nora meeting alone one afternoon, talking and exchanging gifts, every word, every gesture, communicating a mass of unspoken feelings. Then, Swann sneaking into Kat's bedroom and helping her cut her hair before chemotherapy takes it. This is some of the most profound, sensitively structured and emotionally resonant writing about the teenage experience of love and loss I have ever encountered in a video game.
Tape Two ends on an ambiguous note, though I think this is utterly true to the experience of playing. The mysterious hole in the worlds, which the characters call 'the abyss', can be interpreted as entirely symbolic, as can all the supernatural events in the game, and this is a brave, credible narrative decision. Sometimes, there are no answers, and sometimes the magic we perceived around us when we were young turns out to have been something else entirely – perhaps just friendship or imagination, or the yearning to be something in the world.
The effect is like Stranger Things directed by Kelly Reichardt – a realist fantasy in which silence and ambiguity come to the fore. Lost Records is ultimately a game about love, grief and self-recrimination, and the different intensities of those forces as we age. By the end you miss the optimism and verve of those girls in the woods, as though you were one of them – and quite possibly, in a lot of ways, you were.

Major Zoe drama confirmed in EastEnders as Kat is left reeling by Slater shocks
Another member of the Slater-Moon clan discovers Alfie's (Shane Richie) secrets in EastEnders next week. As viewers of the BBC One soap have seen, Alf' has been concealing his search for step-daughter Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan) for the last few months. He's went to extreme lengths to conceal his plight from wife Kat (Jessie Wallace), who hasn't been in touch with her eldest child in a number of years. Kat has so far uncovered a series of lies he's told – but each time he's managed to evade being caught out. Next week, however, he isn't as lucky. Honestly, we're not sure. She showed up on Stacey Slater's (Lacey Turner) doorstep during her brief period away from Walford, and the two hadn't seen one another in decades. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Clearly in a bad way, Stace' rented a flat and invited her to stay, even lending her money in the hope it would get her back on her feet. Of course, Zoe hasn't returned any of the cash. Alfie was then summoned to try and resolve the situation in confidence, with Zoe then creating an fabricated story so that her family would believe that Spanish loansharks were hunting her down. Zoe then fled to Barcelona, asserting that she'd done something 'so bad' that her family would disown her. Fearing the worst, Alfie decided to follow – telling his suspicious wife that he was actually going to stay with brother Spencer (Christopher Parker) in Australia. Kat became infuriated when the lies began to unravel, and Stacey was forced to create yet another lie. She said that Alfie was in a bad headspace after another cancer scare. Jean Slater (Gillian Wright) later assumed that he was actually helping out his estranged daughter Cherry, something which Kat then believed. Alfie, believing his game was up, recorded a tell-all voicemail message after one too many beers and sent it to Kat. She'd just bought The Queen Vic, and was far too distracted to listen. Stepping away of the chaos, she finally pressed play when a mugger (one of Okie's (Aayan Ibikunle Shoderu) pals) stole the device and drove off. Next week, the phone is found by a member of the . Cue the doof doofs! It all kicks off when Joel Marshall (Max Murray) is on a mission to get some quick cash to pay for tickets to see his favourite influencer. Dad Ross (Alex Walkinshaw) – who knows the sort of misogynistic rubbish this influencer spouts – is firmly against it, and so he has to try and seek money from elsewhere. Meanwhile, Lily Slater (Lillia Turner) notices that cousin Tommy Moon (Sonny Kendall) has been interacting with malicious posts about her mum Stacey using a fake profile. After telling his parents, they decide to confront him about Joel's concerning influence on his behaviour. At the cafe, Joel asks Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) for work, and an intrigued Harry Mitchell (Elijah Holloway) listens in. He's been instructed by Okie to wipe the stolen phones before selling them on, and Joel could be just the man for the job. As he sets to work, he encourages Tommy to get involved. The lads are stunned to find Kat's device, especially when they discover that Alfie's voicemail still hasn't been listened to. Pressing play, Tommy hears everything about Zoe. BBC dismisses complaint over 'inappropriate sex scene' in EastEnders
The BBC has dismissed a complaint for 'inappropriate sexual content' in a recent episode of EastEnders. Broadcast on June 10, the episode saw Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) attempt to seduce hubby-to-be Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) amid fears that he was no longer sexually attracted to her. The episode was part of an ongoing storyline that saw Alfie struggle with erectile dysfunction following treatment for his prostate cancer, which was why he was finding it difficult to be intimate with Kat. Alfie was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year, and kept the news a secret from Kat for quite a while. He only revealed his diagnosis to his friends after having an accident in the Queen Vic. After revealing the truth to Kat, their relationship grew stronger and they decided to get married again. Unfortunately, there hadn't been a lot of intimacy between them, which had left Kat feeling insecure. This only got worse when she found porn on her laptop, and assumed it had been Alfie's. In reality, it was son Tommy Moon's (Sonny Kendall), but Kat had no idea at the time. In the episode in question, Kat turned to Jean Slater (Gillian Wright) and Mo Harris (Laila Morse) for advice, explaining that Alfie struggled to perform in the bedroom and they needed to use 'help' to get things going. After Jean insisted she would take the kids for the evening so they could spend some quality time together, Kat was left feeling disheartened by Alfie's reaction. Doubling down on her mission, Kat dressed up in leopard print lingerie, which she revealed to Alfie from beneath a long jacket. However, when even this didn't help Alfie to get in the mood, she questioned how they could be expected to get married when he 'can't bear to touch her'. With Kat having stormed out, Alfie called after her, but to no avail. More Trending The BBC ruled that the content was not inappropriate and therefore the complaint was not upheld, revealing the outcome in their latest complaints report. Elsewhere in the episode, Elaine Peacock (Harriet Thorpe) was left devastated when she spotted George Knight (Colin Salmon) cuddling up to Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins). EastEnders' dramatic Zoe Slater trailer reveals another soap legend is returning with her
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) EASTENDERS fans are in for a treat as not one but TWO soap legends make a epic return this week. BBC bosses have released a first look trailer of Zoe Slater's comeback to Albert Square as she comes face-to-face with mum Kat Slater. 5 Zoe Slater is not the only Walford favourite returning to Albert Square this week Credit: BBC 5 Kat Slater comes face-to-face with her estranged daughter after 20 years Credit: BBC 5 Eagle-eyed fans spotted Sharon Watts in the teaser clip ahead of her return Credit: BBC But she's not the only character in the clip that fans haven't seen for a while. EastEnders icon Sharon Watts is also spotted around 30 seconds into the trailer, revealing she's also back. Sharon, who is played by Letitia Dean, hasn't been seen on screen in January, before she left Walford to visit her friend Michelle in Australia after the events of the Christmas storyline which saw Keanu Taylor stabbed to death by Linda Carter. But it looks like Sharon will be coming out of hiding and returning to the Square. In the new teaser, Zoe appears to rain on new Queen Vic landlady and estranged mum Kat's parade. The clip showed Zoe walking towards Albert Square while bringing a storm with her. On the opposite side, Kat is seen smiling and laughing in the sunshine as she struts along the road in her leopard print and heels. But her beaming face then turns to horror when she catches sight of her long lost daughter approaching her. As viewers gear up for the mother of all reunions, eagle-eyed fans were quick to spot soap favourite Sharon in the 40 second clip. She was seen alongside Patrick Trueman as they shielded themselves from the rain under an umbrella, while watching Zoe's big return. BBC hit by complaints over EastEnders' 'inappropriate sex scene' On the other side, Stacey and Freddie Slater were seen looking jovial with Kat. The miserable weather appears to be a huge hint at the storyline that bosses have in store for Sharon and Patrick. Fans took to the comment section to share their excitement ahead of Sharon's return. One wrote: "Yay Sharon's back sorry not sorry." A second posted: "Sharon's back too, she's been missed," while a third commented: "Good to see Sharon back in Walford." Fans of EastEnders were left stunned when it was revealed that Michelle Ryan's character had made a shock return back in June. The Slater sisters took Albert Square by storm when they arrived. Young Zoe fell out with protective Kat, played by Jessie Wallace, storming off with the words: 'You can't tell me what to do. 'You ain't my mother.' Kat famously screamed back: 'Yes I am!' It became one of the most quoted lines in soap history. The plot twist revealed Zoe — who was brought up believing Kat was her sister — found out she was actually her mum. Discussing her decision to leave at the time, Michelle said: 'I've always taken chances. I think that's how you progress.' Since then Michelle has appeared in several films, including 4.3.2.1. and Cockneys vs Zombies. She has also had guest roles in BBC shows Doctor Who and Merlin. 5 Sharon has been missing from the soap since January Credit: BBC
