Lost Records: Bloom & Rage (Tape Two) review – love, grief and self-recrimination as the girls reunite

Lost Records: Bloom & Rage (Tape Two) review – love, grief and self-recrimination as the girls reunite

The Guardian18-04-2025

One thing you realise as you get older is that memories are plastic and that the stories you tell about your life change with every recollection, depending on who you are at the time. This is one of the themes – and indeed the mechanics – of Lost Records, a narrative adventure about four teenage girls who develop an intense friendship in rural Michigan during the summer of 1995. In the first instalment, they form a band, discover an old shack in the woods to use as a clubhouse, and encounter a supernatural force emanating from a deep hole they discover nearby. But as autumn draws in and the girls plan a climactic rock gig, tragic secrets are uncovered.
Cleverly, the story is told mostly in flashback, as the characters meet again, decades later, in their long-abandoned home town – they're older, wiser and with new perspectives on what happened to them as teenagers. Lead character Swann, a keen photographer whose video camera provides a key game interface in the first episode, is living a solitary life, while Autumn is still filled with anxiety and Nora is now an influencer. Missing is Kat whose terminal cancer diagnosis obliterates their world at the close of part one.
While the first instalment focused on the excitement and hubris of the teenage characters, this is a much darker story concentrating on the adults as they pick apart their lives. Through dialogue trees and interactive memory segments you help Swann navigate the meeting, as well as moments from the past. There is less of the video camera this time. In the first part, there were multiple occasions where you had to film certain scenes, creating a nicely personal bank of footage which could be edited and reshot. There is also much less actual gameplay: an early scene where you have to pack a box and a later stealth sequence where you sneak into Kat's bedroom are the only real moments of ludic challenge. I missed taking more of an active role.
What you get instead, are some incredibly poignant narrative scenes, as the girls battle with the reality of Kat's diagnosis and the raw ambiguity of their feelings for each other. Two moments stand out especially: Swann and Nora meeting alone one afternoon, talking and exchanging gifts, every word, every gesture, communicating a mass of unspoken feelings. Then, Swann sneaking into Kat's bedroom and helping her cut her hair before chemotherapy takes it. This is some of the most profound, sensitively structured and emotionally resonant writing about the teenage experience of love and loss I have ever encountered in a video game.
Tape Two ends on an ambiguous note, though I think this is utterly true to the experience of playing. The mysterious hole in the worlds, which the characters call 'the abyss', can be interpreted as entirely symbolic, as can all the supernatural events in the game, and this is a brave, credible narrative decision. Sometimes, there are no answers, and sometimes the magic we perceived around us when we were young turns out to have been something else entirely – perhaps just friendship or imagination, or the yearning to be something in the world.
The effect is like Stranger Things directed by Kelly Reichardt – a realist fantasy in which silence and ambiguity come to the fore. Lost Records is ultimately a game about love, grief and self-recrimination, and the different intensities of those forces as we age. By the end you miss the optimism and verve of those girls in the woods, as though you were one of them – and quite possibly, in a lot of ways, you were.

EastEnders wedding thrown into chaos as Kat calls things off with Alfie

A misunderstanding puts Kat Slater's (Jessie Wallace) wedding to Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) in jeopardy next week, but will the EastEnders finally have reason to celebrate? It's been quite a quick turnaround for the couple, who are engaged this week in the spur of the moment. Kat had invested in a new limousine business, and when Alfie decided to stage a fake wedding shoot, he decided to put the wheels into motion and make it official. Little did they realise, trouble was brewing back at home, as son Tommy (Sonny Kendall) used Alfie's credit card to purchase pornography online. In upcoming scenes, Kat's left reeling after stumbling across the explicit video on the family laptop – completely unaware that it was actually Tommy who bought it. Assuming the worst, she opens up to Jean Slater (Gillian Wright), fearing that her fiancé might be turning to adult content, especially with things having cooled off in the bedroom since his cancer treatment. Blissfully unaware and trying to reignite the spark, Alfie whips up a romantic meal, but Kat beats him to it – arriving in full seduction mode. The atmosphere soon turns frosty when Alfie slows things down, and a wounded and offended Kat storms off. Jean urges Kat to have an honest chat with her partner, while Patrick Trueman (Rudolph Walker) gives Alfie his own shoulder to cry on. Eventually, the pair sit down for a long-overdue heart-to-heart, hoping to make amends from the situation they've found themselves in. But the peace is short-lived when Kat brings up that video. As the situation escalates, they realise that Tommy is the one responsible. The teen has developed a worrying obsession with adult content, ever since striking up a friendship with newcomer Joel Marshall (Max Murray). His dad Ross (Alex Walkinshaw) and Ross' girlfriend Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig) both believe that he could do with some positive male influences, and are pleased to see him bonding with Tommy over his wedding speech. What they don't realise is that both lads are entrapped in a dangerous web of online content. On-off EastEnders couple Kat Slater and Alfie Moon have a long and complicated history, which began when they were part of a will-they-won't-they storyline while working behind the bar of the Queen Vic in 2002. After finally getting together, they tied the knot on Christmas Day 2003, but were ripped apart a year later by Kat's jealous ex, gangster Andy Hunter (Michael Higgs), who threatened to kill Alfie unless Kat slept with him. Realising their feelings for one another were still there, they gave their marriage another shot and left Walford for pastures new at the end of 2005. Five years later, they made a bombshell comeback when it was revealed Kat had been having an affair with Alfie's cousin Michael Moon (Steve John Shepherd) and was pregnant with his son. They eventually reconciled, with Alfie agreeing to bring Tommy up as his own. However, they were heartbroken when their baby 'died' – before it was later revealed Ronnie Mitchell had actually swapped their baby with her son James, who had died from cot death. After a joyous reunion with baby Tommy, the pair were torn apart again when Kat's subsequent affair with Derek Branning (Jamie Foreman) was exposed. But a reconciliation eventually followed – as did their twin sons Bert and Ernie – before Kat and Alfie swapped the Square for Spain in 2016 after winning big on the lottery. Two years later, a broke Kat returned to Walford having split from Alfie again, after cheating on him. When he later followed home, the couple had a short-lived reunion before Alfie was revealed as the father of Kat's cousin Hayley Slater's (Katie Jarvis) baby daughter Cherry. With their relationship in tatters, Alfie did a bunk from Walford in 2019 after scamming £50k out of Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), who Kat later went on to have an unlikely relationship with. When Alfie returned to Albert Square again three years later, he sabotaged Kat's wedding to Phil, but it wasn't enough to split them up and they rescheduled their nuptials. However, after Kat discovered Phil had cheated on her with Emma Harding (Patsy Kensit), the pair split and she moved in with Alfie. As Kat and Alfie's big day rolls around, their happiness is already under threat. Worries about Tommy and the video loom large, and although Alfie vows to have a word with his son, chaos (in true Walford fashion) keeps getting in the way. By the time he confesses to bungling several wedding tasks, Kat's had enough, and calls the whole thing off! More Trending Uh-oh. Alfie is left stunned and furious, charging out of The Vic in frustration. Meanwhile, Kat drowns her sorrows with Elaine Knight (Harriet Thorpe) and Yolande Trueman (Angela Wynter), and the trio swap notes on love and loss, with Elaine (or should that be E-laine) offering some unexpected food for thought. As Alfie gets a pep talk from someone unexpected, he's left wondering whether he and Kat still stand a chance. View More » With emotions running high, Kat and Alfie finally sit down to talk. Hot off the British Soap Awards, the nation's favourite serial dramas are bringing the drama once again, as confirmed in our brand new batch of spoilers. The week everyone has been waiting for is finally upon us in Emmerdale as Nate Robinson's (Jurell Carter) body is finally discovered. Fearing that the body belongs to Anthony, Ruby Miligan (Beth Cordingly) is thrown into a panic, and immediately goes to confess. But, when the true identity of the body is revealed, fingers start pointing. Bad news for Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley), who dealt Nate a brutal beating on the day he disappeared… Hollyoaks, meanwhile, sees the aftermath of Clare Devine's (Gemma Bissix) dramatic return – and trust us when we say this is just the beginning of the excitement – there is much more to come. The drama also continues over on EastEnders, where wedding bells ring as Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) proposes to off-again, on-again (ad infinitum) lover Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace). Meanwhile, in Coronation Street, a Weatherfield icon wraps up her two decade-long tenure with the ITV soap as Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) finally exits the Cobbles. But will she be going alone? And Neighbours sees an emotional week on the cards for Paul Robinson. Here's our first look at all of the spoilers from the week ahead in soap. 1. Returning home, she reveals that she almost relapsed. Appalled, Peter breaks up with her, revealing that he plans on seeking custody of their sons. The next day, as Peter seeks custody advice from Johnny, Lauren officially calls time on their relationship. 3. Cindy hopes to kick off the re-opening of the Albert with a big relaunch party. Meanwhile, jealous Elaine schedules a karaoke night for the same time, hoping to humiliate Cindy. However, it's karaoke that's a flop, while the Albert re-opening is a roaring success. As Elaine licks her wounds, Cindy reveals that it was George who helped make her night happen – causing her rival to make an embarrassing scene. 4. After Barney accidentally offends Avani, she and Priya shrug him off when he attempts to apologise. Later, she turns the tables on Joel too, as he tries to humiliate her. Meanwhile, Tommy is furious when Kat hires Amy as a babysitter. When Joel arrives, he's left red-faced as Amy explodes at him for his treatment of Avani. Later, he talks Tommy into using Alfie's credit card to watch adult videos online… 5. After deciding he wants to live independently, Kojo is overjoyed that George has put his reluctance to one side and will help him hunt down the perfect new home in Walford. 6. News of the body in the lake spreads. Terrified that her secret about Anthony's death is about to come out, Ruby leaves a note for Caleb and runs off to confess. As she reveals the years of abuse her father put her through, Caleb's solicitor arrives – with a plan up his sleeve. 7. The body in the lake is revealed to be Nate's. The police break the news to Tracy, who begins to question whether Cain could have been responsible. With Cain's own family wondering whether he could have killed his own son, he's taken down the station for questioning. However, the police have another shock in store, sharing a further revelation in Nate's case… 8. After rejecting Tracy's offer of help, proud Pollard takes a tumble. Visiting in hospital, Jacob and Kerry urge him to consider help at home. He turns his nose up at the idea, but Kerry calls a home-help company anyway. And, as he suffers another fall, Pollard finally admits that he needs help. 9. When April asks Belle for a summer job, she's rewarded with a trial shift at Take A Vow. But trouble is quickly looming – and the couple look far from overjoyed in these first-look pictures. There is even a chance Kat may not go through with it. The couple first married in the 2003 Christmas special, with Kat's dream of a white wedding coming true thanks to a snow machine Alfie hired for the occasion. They were ripped apart a year later when Kat's jealous ex, Andy Hunter, threatened to kill Alfie unless Kat slept with him. The pair divorced then remarried in 2014 – but that didn't last either. Kat subsequently had a brief failed marriage to Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) before reuniting with Alfie. Let's hope it's third time lucky. GORD NO 7 Jamie Oliver has assured fans his long-running feud with Gordon Ramsay is not back on Credit: Disney General Entertainment Con DESPITE describing Gordon Ramsay as a 'psychopath' in a viral social media clip earlier this year, Jamie Oliver has assured fans their long-running feud is not back on. The chefs fell out in 2009 when Gordon referred to his TV rival as a 'one-pot wonder', later labelling him a 'mere cook'. Jamie hit back that the Hell's Kitchen hothead was 'jealous' of his career and was 'too busy shouting and screaming'. But Jamie has now told The Sunday Times Magazine: 'Me and Gordon are absolutely friends – our little berating decade is behind us. 'He's smashing life at the moment. He's doing things that no chef has ever done. 'We're on good terms, and long may it continue.' GRACE IS BURGER QUEEN 7 Celebrity MasterChef judge Grace Dent has some surprising secret tastes Credit: Getty SHE has dined at some of the world's top restaurants and is known for her withering put-downs of poor cuisine. But Celebrity MasterChef judge Grace Dent – tipped to replace Gregg Wallace when the show returns later this year – actually has some surprising secret tastes. She told Scott Mills on the Mercedes-Benz Vans Under the Bonnet podcast: 'I do love fast food, especially in service stations. People go, 'Oh I hate Burger King it's horrible.' But it's not. It's delicious. 'You can't put a price on stopping at a bog-standard service station at 11am.' But Grace admits she can't really do it now, due to her links with posh nosh. She said: 'People will just take photos of me because it's so comical.' BEEB HAS FAITH IN SPIN-OFF 7 The BBC's Pilgrimage is getting a spin-off which will start filming this month Credit: BBC THE Beeb's Faith show Pilgrimage has played host to some interesting stars over the years, from Christine McGuinness to Neil Morrissey. Now I can reveal it's getting a spin-off which will start filming this month. The programme's creators CTVC are working on the similar BBC project, which takes a deeper dive into religions and beliefs. The show has yet to get an official title but filming is set to wrap at the end of this summer – so it could be on our screens around this time next year. Pilgrimage has delivered steady ratings since it debuted in 2018 with its first adventure across Spain. Since then, it's taken a group of celebs on various treks in countries ranging from Italy and Turkey to Switzerland and Scotland. HARRY'S MAGIC PLAN 7 Harry Moulding has been thinking about what's next for him Credit: Shutterstock Editorial HARRY MOULDING is already thinking about the future after triumphing on Britain's Got Talent on Saturday. The magician says his journey began when he was 11 years old and a conjurer came to his school. From that point Harry reckoned he was Harry Potter. He said of his teachers: 'I used to get my cards confiscated in class because I constantly wanted to perform my magic tricks to school friends. 'I'm sorry to the teachers who had to deal with my magic antics, but I hope they can see it was all worth it now. I'm grateful to my school. 'With the money, perhaps I can open the magic school, a BGT Hogwarts, and Simon Cowell could be the Dumbledor of BGTWarts.' I think he should come up with a catchier name though. LOVE Island has added another hunk to its roster just days before the new series kicks off – Londoner Tommy Bradley. An insider said: 'He's a cheeky chappy who enjoys a night out with the lads. "He's packed on serious muscle – so he's not just a personality hire.' MORE than three years after it last aired, Stranger Things is returning to Netflix for its final series. Four new episodes of the show, starring Millie Bobby Brown, will appear in November, with three more out on Christmas Day followed by the finale on New Year's Eve.
