India Bucks Tepid Trend Across Emerging Asia as US Data Awaits
(Bloomberg) -- Follow Bloomberg India on WhatsApp for exclusive content and analysis on what billionaires, businesses and markets are doing. Sign up here.
Markets across much of emerging Asia traded in a narrow range ahead of US payrolls data, with the exception of Indian bonds that swung wildly after a bigger-than-expected interest-rate cut.
Bloomberg's Asia Dollar Spot Index dipped 0.1% on Friday, with the stock benchmarks in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and mainland China also slipping. Bucking the trend was India, where the Nifty 50 advanced and the 10-year bond yield slid as much as 11 basis points. It later recouped the losses to trade flat at 6.25%.
Global funds shifting money away from the US and back to Asia has been a big theme for investors in recent weeks. Data due later on Friday is likely to show US hiring slowed last month, potentially giving the Federal Reserve grounds to cut interest rates this year.
An index of Asian currencies versus the dollar has already advanced 2% this quarter, and further Fed easing may help extend their gains. So would an easing of trade tensions, though the most recent call between President Donald Trump and China's Xi Jinping failed to lift sentiment.
'A weaker NFP print would reinforce the narrative that US exceptionalism is indeed fading,' Malayan Banking Bhd. analysts wrote in a note 'We hold on to selling USD.'
Currency valuation has emerged as a central theme in the trade talks between the US and other countries, though in its first report on foreign-exchange practices since Trump returned to office, the Treasury Department declined to name any country a manipulator. China, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Vietnam all feature on the US watch list.
Even with US scrutiny of exchange rates, a number of market participants foresee further EM currency gains. JPMorgan Chase & Co. this week suggested investors boost their exposure to the currencies of developing markets. The firm said it was positive on the South African rand, Thai baht, Brazil's real and Mexico's peso.
For India, the deeper-than-expected 50 basis point cut to the repurchase rate signals that policy makers are worried about growth against the backdrop of global trade tensions.
'We still expect INR to underperform,' analysts at Nomura Holdings Inc. wrote in a note following the decision. The bank said it is long EUR/INR and also positive on Indian rates.

RBI cuts repo rate by 50 bps to 5.50 pc
Mumbai, June 6 (UNI) The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday in its second bi-monthly monetary policy of FY26. cut the repo rate by 50 basis points (bps) to 5.50 pc from 6.00 pc earlier. This is the central bank's third consecutive repo rate cut. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra-led Monetary Policy led committee decided to cut the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) by 100 basis points (bps) to 3% from 4% earlier releasing Rs 2.5 lakh crore of lendable resources to the banking system. The MPC also decided to change the policy stance to 'Neutral' from 'Accommodative' in a bid to support economic growth. This RBI's rate cut decision is expected to stimulate borrowing and investment, leading to a higher growth rate. The policy panel retained growth estimate at 6.5 per cent but projected a lower inflation of 3.7 per cent in the current fiscal. Malhotra asserted that the global backdrop remains fragile, and trade projections have been revised downwards, but the Indian economy is progressing well despite the global uncertainties. "India's strength comes from the strong balance sheets of the five major sectors. The Indian economy offers immense opportunities to local and foreign investors. We are already growing at a fast rate. We aspire to grow faster," he said. Inflation has softened significantly, the RBI Governor said, and the near-term and medium-term outlook exudes confidence. Food inflation outlook remains soft, and core inflation is expected to remain benign. The RBI also projected that retail inflation for the current financial year would be 3.7% against its April projection of 4%. Government data shows it fell to 3.16% in April from 3.34% in March, remaining within the RBI's comfort level. The various economic indicators remain strong, with the RBI Governor pointing to a gradual rise in discretionary spending and healthy private consumption. Industrial activity is gaining gradually while the services sector is likely to maintain momentum, he said. Rural demand remains steady while urban demand is improving, he added. The RBI kept the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth projection unchanged at 6.5% in the current financial year. The quarterly projections are: 2.9% (April-June), 3.4% (July-September), 3.9% (October-December), and 4.4% (January-March). The Central bank also reduced the cash reserve ratio (CRR) by 100 bps and said it will release Rs 2.5 lakh crore of bank funds. CRR refers to the percentage of total deposits that banks must hold in liquid form with the RBI. India continues to be an attractive investment destination, assured Mr Malhotra, adding that the forex reserves stand at $691 billion, which is sufficient to fund more than 11 months of goods imports. Tesla's Head of Optimus Humanoid Robot Program Exits Company
(Bloomberg) -- The leader of Tesla Inc.'s Optimus program is leaving the company, according to a person familiar with the matter, injecting uncertainty into the humanoid robot effort that Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk sees as a significant part of its future business. Milan Kovac, the head of engineering for Optimus, informed colleagues on Friday that he is departing effective immediately, said the person, who asked not to be identified discussing private information. Ashok Elluswamy, who leads Tesla's Autopilot teams, will take over responsibility for Optimus, the person said. Kovac, Elluswamy and Musk didn't immediately respond to requests for comment. Musk praised Kovac and Elluswamy in a June 2 social media post as two 'key people' in the company's artificial intelligence operations who 'have been there from the beginning.' Musk is increasingly betting Tesla's future on robotics, along with artificial intelligence and driverless cars, as the traditional electric-vehicle business faces challenges. The automaker's sales have cratered in key markets due to lukewarm demand and a consumer backlash over the CEO's political activity. This week, Musk's relationship with President Donald Trump erupted into a public feud, raising further risks for Tesla on the regulatory front. Tesla drew attention in October when it used Optimus prototypes to tend bar and interact with guests at a flashy event in the Los Angeles area to generate investor enthusiasm for upcoming products. Bloomberg reported afterward that humans were used to remotely control some capabilities of the robots. Musk has said Optimus, which would handle many household tasks, could be 'the biggest product ever of any kind.' The robots could eventually be available to consumers for $20,000 to $30,000 each, Musk has said. The robot's capabilities have long been closely watched by investors, even if the product's launch timing remains uncertain. Observers noted in 2022 when an early prototype had to be carried by people on stage. On the most recent Tesla earnings call, Musk said he expects to have thousands of Optimus robots working in Tesla's own facilities by the end of this year. He also predicted Tesla will be able to build millions of units per year by the end of the decade. --With assistance from Kara Carlson. (Updates with Musk post in fourth paragraph.)
