2025 College Football Predictions: 'This Year's Indiana Is Illinois'
As someone who did time in Champaign as an undergrad during the Ron Zook years, and spent his fair share of hours watching awful Illini football games at Memorial Stadium, I can't believe I even typed that question out.
Yet here we are, six weeks before the 2025 college football season and Bret Bielema's Illini are one of the most popular offseason darlings.
In fact, my FOX Sports teammate Joel Klatt recently ranked Illinois as the No. 1 most likely team to make the College Football Playoff for the first time.
"Bielema has built this team into what he wants," Klatt said on "The Joel Klatt Show."
"Physical and tough. They [beat South Carolina] in the bowl game. Sixteen starters are back. [Quarterback] Luke Altmeyer is back for his third season and the entire offensive line is back in front of him.
"Here's the schedule," Klatt continued. "They don't have to play Penn State, Oregon or Michigan and they get Ohio State at home. They've got a Missouri-esque Big Ten schedule and I think they've hit the lottery.
"This year's Indiana is Illinois."
Cue a bartender at KAMS pouring a round of blue guys.
The two big question marks I have around the roster are at wide receiver and defensive line. It won't be easy to replace NFL receivers Pat Bryant and Zakhari Franklin, and there are three newcomers on defense in the trenches.
It'll also take 10 wins to make the CFP, so the Illini must be even better than last year. If I've learned anything over the years, it's that it's much easier for a non-blue blood to come out of nowhere than it is to sustain success.
Illinois' last 10-win regular season came back in 2001, with quarterback Kurt Kittner, star wideout Brandon Lloyd, defensive backs Eugene Wilson and Christian Morton, and with head coach Ron Turner at the helm.
The 2002 team finished 5-7.
This year's Illini have a regular-season win total of 8.5 (u-155) at BetMGM, and they're as high as +575 to be a playoff team across the market.
One Las Vegas bookmaker sees the upside Klatt sees.
"The program is much improved," Wynn Resorts trading manager Motoi Pearson told me. "I don't know if they're going to make the Playoff, but after what Indiana did last year, I'm basically a believer in any team ever."
"I have Illinois 16 teams higher than Indiana," Pearson admitted.
What's that spread on a neutral field?
"Illinois -4."
Elsewhere, I can't stop salivating at the thought of getting points with Miami in the Hurricanes' home opener against Notre Dame on Sunday, Aug. 31.
The Irish are fresh off a run to the national championship game and morale is high. So is the appetite to bet Marcus Freeman's squad, as ND is currently -3.
Hurricanes quarterback Carson Beck is a polarizing player, but FanDuel has a stale 37-1 price on him to win the Heisman Trophy. Let's not forget Beck was a co-favorite last August while at Georgia and you can argue Miami's offensive style is more conducive to big quarterback stats and success than most.
Just ask Cam Ward, the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
I rarely bet Heisman preseason favorites and have little interest in Texas quarterback Arch Manning around 6-to-1. If anything, maybe he'll struggle at Ohio State or Florida, and we can jump in at double digits.
Only six more weeks 'til our Saturdays are back.

Andy Staples names Notre Dame's Mike Denbrock as one of the nation's top OC's
We saw the impact that offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock had in his first season with Notre Dame last fall, helping guide them all the way to the College Football Playoff championship game. Now that the majority of the returning players have a year of knowing the offense under their belts, there is plenty of potential that the Irish could have a sleeping giant on offense. On3's Andy Staples sees that it very well could be the case, and named Denbrock as his No. 2 offensive coordinator in the game behind only Oregon's Will Stein. Denbrock had the Notre Dame offense humming last fall, scoring 36.1 points-per-game, which was good for No. 8 nationally. The Irish averaged just short of 400 yards-per-game, with impeccable balance, as both the rushing and passing yards were right about at 200-per contest. This coming season will be a much different task, as Notre Dame is still deciding on which quarterback, CJ Carr or Kenny Minchey, will lead the offense this fall. Denbrock will have his work cut out for him, but if he can replicate the success that the Irish had on offense last year, he'll be worth every penny. Josh Heupel details Boo Carter's status with Tennessee football
Tennessee will kick off fall training camp Wednesday in preparation for its 2025 football season. Fifth-year Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel met with media on Tuesday ahead of the Vols' first practice. He discussed sophomore defensive back Boo Carter and his status with Tennessee's football program. "Boo is a part of our team here," Heupel said. "There's some things that he's got to accomplish to get back on the field with us. Don't have a set timeline on that. Our leadership council has been part of those things, those discussions, with me and with Boo." The 5-foot-11, 220-pound defensive back appeared in al 13 games for the Vols as a freshman in 2024. He recorded 38 tackles, three tackles for a loss, one sack, one interception, one pass deflection and 12 punt return attempts for 198 yards. Carter earned 2024 SEC All-Freshman Team honors and was named to the 2024 Fall SEC Academic Honor Roll. Following the College Football Playoff, he announced a return to Tennessee as a sophomore in 2025. He went to the Vols from Bradley Central High School in Cleveland, Tennessee. Los Angeles Sparks riding five-game winning streak as 2nd half of season is underway
NEW YORK (AP) — No team has been playing better since the All-Star break then the Los Angeles Sparks and they've been doing it with a stellar offense. The team has won five straight games, including three on the road, heading into Tuesday night's matchup with the Las Vegas Aces. It's only the third time in the past five years that the team has won five or more games in a row. The Sparks had a nine-game winning streak in 2020 and a six-game one in 2023. Los Angeles has scored 90 or more points in all five games for the first time in franchise history and has put up consecutive 100-point efforts — again a first for the team. 'We've been playing better in the last month, part of that is getting bodies back,' Sparks coach Lynne Roberts said. 'We're playing with more pace, so they're figuring it out. We don't play a traditional style, there's a lot of freedom.' The Sparks have been getting strong contributions from all five of their starters. Kelsey Plum and Dearica Hamby are averaging 20.8 points each. Rickea Jackson and Azura Stevens are right behind at 18.2 points and 17.0, respectively. Jackson torched the Liberty on Saturday for 20 points in the first-half and hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer. Los Angeles will also welcome back Cameron Brink on Tuesday. She's been sidelined for 13 months with an ACL injury. Power poll rankings Minnesota remained the No. 1 team in the poll with Atlanta jumping up to the second spot. New York was third and Phoenix fell to fourth. Seattle was fifth and Indiana sixth, with Las Vegas next. The Sparks moved up two spots to eighth. Washington and Golden State followed Los Angeles. Dallas, Chicago and Connecticut rounded out the poll. Clark health update Caitlin Clark is still sidelined with a right groin injury and there's no timetable yet on her return. Indiana's star guard had a second opinion on the injury when the Fever visited New York last week. The team announced there were no signs of additional damage and that maintaining her long-term health was the focus in her recovery. Player of the week Kelsey Mitchell of Indiana was the AP player of the week after averaging 28.3 points, four assists and 1.7 steals to help the Fever go 2-1 last week.
