Chhavi Mittal opens up about her chemical-free skin and face routine, avoiding sunscreen: ‘The only thing I use…'

Chhavi Mittal recently revealed her 'go-to' chemical-free skincare, and makeup routine. 'Often, breakouts happen, and because of the sweat, pores tend to get clogged. So, my go-to for that is absolutely not using any chemicals on my face — whether it's sunscreen, moisturiser, or anything else. The only thing I use on my face is coconut oil. Also, I don't do any makeup unless there is a shoot,' she shared in an Instagram video.
So, we contacted experts to understand if it is a good practice.
Dr Shareefa Chause, dermatologist, Dr Shareefa Skin Care Clinic, Mumbai, said that it is not a good idea to substitute sunscreen with any oil or product. 'Skipping sunscreen is not good for your skin. Using coconut oil on the face without applying sunscreen can do more harm than good. While coconut oil may feel moisturising and offer smoothness, it does not provide foolproof protection from UV rays,' said Dr Chause.
Coconut oil offers minimal sun protection, with an SPF ranging from 2 to 8, which is significantly lower than the recommended SPF 30 for effective sun protection, added Dr Karuna Malhotra, aesthetic physician and skin expert, Cosmetic Skin Clinic, Rajouri Garden, New Delhi.
She mentioned that while coconut oil can hydrate the skin, it does not provide adequate protection against harmful UVA and UVB rays. Sunscreens are formulated with ingredients that block or absorb these rays, thereby preventing sunburn, premature aging, and reducing the risk of skin cancer,' Dr Malhotra told indianexpress.com.
For optimal skin health, it's crucial to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and more, apply it generously to all exposed areas, and reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating. 'Relying solely on coconut oil for sun protection is not advisable,' said Dr Malhotra.
Sunscreen is also essential for protecting your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays and infrared rays, which can lead to sunburn, premature ageing, dark spots, and even skin cancer, said Dr Chause. 'Applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 to 50 daily is the best way to protect your skin barrier and maintain a healthy glow,' said Dr Chause.
Coconut oil is also known to clog pores in people with oily or acne-prone skin, leading to breakouts and acne. 'It also lacks any SPF, making your skin more vulnerable to sun damage and pigmentation. If you love using coconut oil, apply it at night or under sunscreen during the day. But never skip sunscreen; it's the true anti-ageing hero in your skincare routine,' said Dr Chause.

Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Oncology and Research (SRIOR) observed World No Tobacco Day by starting a month-long campaign from May 31 to June 30 to spread awareness about the dangers of tobacco by launching Instagram reels on their official page. District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyaappanavar was the chief guest at the event. R. Sundar, Managing Trustee of SNR Sons Charitable Trust, along with other trust members and senior doctors from the hospital, attended the event. The Collector launched SRIOS's 30 cancer awareness Instagram reels on different topics. In his address, Mr. Sundar said these videos were made to help people understand how tobacco harmed the body and increased the risk of cancer. The short format was designed to reach more people, especially young viewers who used social media often. Dr. P. Guhan, Director of SRIOR, said SRIOR had effectively created awareness about cancer and the ill effects of tobacco for the past 22 years. He also added that tobacco had more than 400 harmful chemicals, including 40 to 50 substances that could cause cancer. Dr. K. Karthikesh, Surgical Oncologist at SRIOR, said the hospital would continue to create awareness and promote good health in the community.

In fact, I wrote a story for Lounge three years ago that focused on kettlebell-only training, so it's time to update that list with another 'workouts of the month" with a little twist: only a single kettlebell will be needed for every workout. Maximilian's 30-minute workout After following many fitness experts, MaximilianMoves seems to be the best page for kettlebell workouts. While the comment section on his posts are full of doubts about whether his body is built entirely on kettlebell exercises, it is just wise to focus on how incredibly good his work is. With over 600,000 followers on Instagram, Maximilian's videos are becoming very popular and there is good reason to follow him. It was tough to choose one video from his collection, but the one below, which he recommends to do for 30 minutes, is perfect if you want to find out what a kettlebell workout looks and feels like. Crockford takes time to teach the moves in the first set of the three that will be attempted, including technique, especially because kettlebell training involves a lot of hip work. He starts off with kettlebell cleans, moves into swings, and then RDLs. This gives you a gist of what to expect in this workout. For those who might need to feel as if they're lifting, this demands the exact amount of effort if not more. It comes equipped with a finisher set of push-ups and jump squats, and ends with a nice stretching routine. Oli McCann's 15-minute upper body workout Some days are just upper body days, and for that there's this 15-minute drill that can be done as a standalone workout, or at the start or end of a longer workout. It's done in a 30-seconds-on, 10-seconds-off format and hits every muscle, including some good core work as well, with planks and drags and rotations.I've used this one as a warm-up and could surely feel more prepared for the remaining workout. If one round isn't enough, then do it twice. That's what makes this one such a favourite if you want to sweat it out, plus it is divided into muscle groups which keeps that hypertrophy goal in mind as well. Daniel PT's kettlebell abs workout If it's only the core you want to target, then Daniel PT replaces his usual high-octane workouts with a calmer more focussed abs workout using a single kettlebell. With easy moves like drops to the side and some drags, he introduces a couple of tough variations of the Russian twist for the main challenge, along with some leg raises.
