Trump-Musk feud: Who deserves the most credit for president's resounding 2024 White House win?

Yahoo06-06-2025
As the war of words between President Donald Trump and Elon Musk rages, it's sparked a new debate over how decisive the world's richest person was in helping Trump recapture the White House in the 2024 election.
The president, speaking with reporters, argued, "I think I would have won" even without Musk's help on the campaign trail last year.
Musk, firing back, argued that "without me, Trump would have lost the election."
While the once-strong alliance between Trump and Musk rapidly disintegrated on Thursday as the two traded barbs over the president's "big, beautiful" tax cuts and spending bill, the zingers also extended to other topics, including last year's presidential election.

Republican Lawmakers Stand Firm Against Musk's 'Kill The Bill' Assault On Trump's Agenda
Musk became the top donor of the 2024 election cycle, dishing out nearly $300 million in support of Trump's bid through America PAC, a Trump-aligned super PAC. Much of the money was used for get-out-the-vote efforts and ads in the crucial battleground states as Trump and Kamala Harris faced off for the presidency.
Musk concentrated much of his efforts on Pennsylvania.
He joined Trump for the first time on the campaign trail at an Oct. 5 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, then held five town halls in the Keystone State later in October.
And Musk set up a war room of sorts in Pittsburgh.
Trump, mentioning how Musk campaigned for him in Pennsylvania, pointed to his White House chief of staff, Susie Wiles, who was co-chair of Trump's 2024 campaign.
The president noted that "Susie would say I would have won Pennsylvania easily anyway."
Musk's Fiscal Conservative Evolution Puts Him At Odds With Trump
Musk, apparently watching Trump's comments in real time, quickly fired back on X, which Musk renamed after buying Twitter.
"Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate," Musk wrote. "Such ingratitude."
Veteran Republican strategist John Brabender, who served as a media consultant to the 2024 Trump campaign, told Fox News Digital that "Elon and many others played an important role in helping the president win states all across America."
"But the bottom line is there's only one constant and one person who is most responsible, by far, and that's President Trump. That's who people voted for," Brabender added.
Longtime Republican consultant Dave Carney, a veteran of numerous GOP presidential campaigns over the past few decades, said the president and Musk are both right.
Carney, who steered Preserve America, another top-spending Trump-aligned super PAC, told Fox News that Trump "might have won without the help, but you can't underestimate how important that help was."
Pointing to Preserve America, Musk's America PAC and MAGA Inc, which was the main Trump-aligned super PAC, Carney said they all deserved "a tremendous amount of credit" and "just made it easier" for Trump to sweep all seven battleground states and win the White House.
Carney also highlighted the Musk-aligned super PAC's "unprecedented field effort, mail and other communications … to turn out these low-propensity Trump voters."
Tom Eddy, the GOP chairman in Erie County, a longtime crucial swing county in the northwestern corner of battleground Pennsylvania, told Fox News that Musk "helped Trump significantly. I really think so. He had money, and he had a name."
But Eddy added that "my gut feeling would be that Trump is basically saying, 'Look. I won the election. These people helped me, but I won.' That's what he's trying to bring across."
In battleground Michigan, veteran Republican strategist Dennis Lennox pointed to Musk's comments and told Fox News "it's incredibly arrogant to say that, but it's probably true."Original article source: Trump-Musk feud: Who deserves the most credit for president's resounding 2024 White House win?

'Fascist scum': Vance and Hegseth booed by DC residents at Union Station

Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth received a frosty reception in Washington, D.C.'s Union Station on Wednesday, shortly after the Trump administration launched a federal takeover of the capital. Vance and Hegseth, joined by White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, were at the transit hub to meet with members of the National Guard deployed to the nation's capital by President Donald Trump. Trump took control of the city's police force and deployed the guard to combat what he called 'out of control crime' in D.C. The two met guardsmen at the fast-food restaurant Shake Shack in the station, covering the troops' lunch. Upon leaving the chain restaurant, Vance and Hegseth faced a chorus of disapproval from angry citizens at the station, in videos shared to social media. Cries of 'fascist scum' and 'wife beater' followed the pair. A member of the crowd called Vance a 'couch f**ker,' a reference to a fake excerpt purported to be from his memoir 'Hillbilly Elegy.' Vance, Hegseth and Miller can be seen walking past the protesters, accompanied by a security detail. Miller later called the protestors 'elderly…stupid white hippies' when speaking with the press at Union scene is emblematic of tensions in the nation's capital following Trump's takeover. A recent poll by the Washington Post-Schar School found that 65 percent of D.C. residents believe that Trump's actions will not make the city safer. Roughly 80 percent of those surveyed opposed Trump's takeover of the D.C. police, while 77 percent supported funding increases 'to build economic opportunities in poor neighborhoods with higher crime.' Fed governor Cook responds to President Trump saying she 'must resign'

President Trump on Wednesday called on Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook to resign as the public pressure on the central bank continues to build. "Cook must resign, now!!!" Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, Wednesday morning. He included a link to a Bloomberg report about a letter sent by Federal Housing Finance Agency head Bill Pulte urging Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate Cook over a pair of mortgages. On Wednesday afternoon, Cook stated: "I have no intention of being bullied to step down from my position because of some questions raised in a tweet. I do intend to take any questions about my financial history seriously as a member of the Federal Reserve and so I am gathering the accurate information to answer any legitimate questions and provide the facts.' Pulte wrote in a letter dated Aug. 15 that Cook "falsified bank documents and property records to acquire more favorable loan terms, potentially committing mortgage fraud under the criminal statute." Late Wednesday morning, the Wall Street Journal reported that Trump has told aides he is "considering attempting to fire" Cook. The president's call for Cook to resign comes as public pressure on the Fed continues amid ongoing changes on the Fed's Board of Governors. Last week, Trump nominated Council of Economic Advisers Chair Stephen Miran to the Fed board to fill a seat left empty by Adriana Kugler, who stepped down from the board on Aug. 8. Should Cook also step down, Trump would have the opportunity to nominate another Fed governor. The search for a replacement for Fed Chair Jerome Powell, whose term leading the central bank ends in May 2026, also continues in the background. Trump said last week that the field of possible replacements for Powell was "down to 3 or 4" candidates." Trump has repeatedly called on Powell to cut rates more aggressively, coining the nickname "Too Late" for the Fed chair. Trump first appointed Powell to the role in 2017; former President Joe Biden renominated Powell as Fed chair in 2021. He's also targeted the central bank's $2.5 billion renovation of the Federal Reserve's headquarters as a "sort of" fireable offense for the Fed chair. Trump and Powell met at the renovation site in late July as Trump once again called for Powell to lower interest rates. Powell is also a member of the Fed's Board of Governors, and his term expires in 2028. It isn't clear whether Powell will also vacate that post when his term as Fed chair ends next year. Reporting from CNBC, however, suggested up to 11 names are under consideration for Powell's role, including Jefferies chief market strategist David Zervos, who told CNBC on Wednesday that the Fed has "never been independent." The mounting discussion around Fed independence and political pressure currently being levied at the central bank comes ahead of the annual Jackson Hole Economic Symposium, which is set to feature Powell's key policy speech of the year on Friday morning. Palantir's Miserable Week Mints Billions for Struggling Shorts

(Bloomberg) -- Palantir Technologies Inc.'s six-session stock-market losing streak has wiped out $73 billion in market value, handing a rare win to short sellers who are getting pounded after betting against this year's Wall Street juggernaut. Since hitting a record on Aug. 12, shares of the data analysis and software firm are down more than 17%. It's their longest losing streak since April 2024, putting the stock on track for its worst week since the tariff tantrum in early April of this year. Why New York City Has a Fleet of New EVs From a Dead Carmaker Trump Takes Second Swing at Cutting Housing Assistance for Immigrants Chicago Schools Seeks $1 Billion of Short-Term Debt as Cash Gone A London Apartment Tower With Echoes of Victorian Rail and Ancient Rome The drop has given short sellers more than $1.6 billion in profits, according to data from S3 Partners LLC. But that barely dents the $4.5 billion in paper losses traders have put up betting against Palantir this year, S3 data shows. While the stock is the worst performer in the S&P 500 Index over the past six sessions, it remains the benchmark's biggest gainer for 2025 after soaring 106%. That climb has pushed Palantir shares to a nosebleed valuation. Yet, contrarian traders have largely bailed on their bets against the stock over the past year because the momentum appears to be unceasing. Short interest as a percentage of Palantir's float, a measure of how many shares are available to borrow and bet against, has fallen to about 2.5% from nearly 5% a year ago. This suggests that short sellers covered their positions as the stock rose, according to Matthew Unterman, managing director of S3 Partners LLC. 'They either wanted to avoid being run over by a monster momentum trade or were forced out after the freight train hit,' said Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers LLC. The recent decline in Palantir's stock price is part of a wider drop in mega-cap technology companies that's weighing on the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 indexes, as investors take some profits off the table and rotate into less expensive parts of the market. 'The selloff that we're seeing in Palantir, it's long overdue and it's not because the short sellers have taken over,' Vikram Rai, portfolio manager and macro trader at Fny Capital Management LP. 'When you have the likes of Google, Meta and Microsoft declining, then obviously the high-beta stocks, which are hopelessly overvalued, will decline more.' Long-oriented investors have driven most of the upside in Palantir shares this year, as opposed to a short squeeze, where traders betting against a stock rush to buy it and get out of their trades before it goes any higher. That said, signs are emerging that short sellers are gradually starting to ramp up bets against Palantir as the stock shows some weakness. Since the beginning of June, short interest has increased by about 10 million shares, according to S3 data. The Denver-based company has roughly 2.3 billion shares outstanding. And even if the stock snaps its losing streak sometime soon, Wall Street pros say contrarian trading in Palantir could keep ticking higher along with the share price. 'If Palantir rallies even a bit, you will see the short seller is coming' back, Rai said, adding that he'd be cautions about stepping into a short position. 'The stock has shown its hand, for lack of a better term, that there is a downward trend.'
