Friends of Muslim Society marks Friendship Day by Awarding Talented Students, Scholars
1 2 3 4 Nagpur: The Muslim Friends' Society (MFS), a group of 60 retired, in-service professionals and govt officials, felicitated and awarded over 160 meritorious students and PhD scholars from the community as part of their 30th annual Friendship Day celebration at Anjuman College of Engineering and Technology (ACET) auditorium on Sunday. The awardees included SSC and HSC students, including a large number of girls, who cleared their exams with flying colours. A special Rs11,000 award sponsored by advocate Firdos Mirza was conferred on an Urdu medium girl student scoring the highest marks in the Marathi subject. The awardees included many students from Kamptee schools. Over three decades ago, some friends came together to start the tradition of awarding each other's kids in a modest living room of an apartment in Anant Nagar. "This was done to keep Muslim families and kids inspired and motivated towards the importance of education as the country was facing communal tension in the early 1990s. We also bring a community topper as one of the guests to guide the meritorious students in their careers," said MFS president Mushtaque Eshaan Qureshi. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Are The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo Over the years, the popularity increased, and the event turned public from being held privately at an apartment. Pedal power could revive Doon, say experts
Dehradun: A city choking on traffic and smog can still be steered toward a cleaner, safer future if its people start pedalling, said experts at a national cycling conclave, held in Dehradun on Sunday. The event was hosted by local group Pahadi Pedallers, bringing together cycling advocates and urban mobility experts from across the country to highlight how a strong cycling culture could help revive the Doon Valley before it's too late. "Some say it's too late to salvage the city, but that's not true," said Lokesh Ohri, founder of Been There Doon That. "There's still a last ray of hope. Everyone wants clean air and a better environment. If we make Dehradun a cycling city, we stand a chance." Experts said that building more flyovers and widening roads only leads to more motorised traffic. Instead, they recommended small, community-driven changes to encourage cycling as a daily habit. "People often worry about cyclist safety due to a lack of infrastructure, but if a few areas are declared no-vehicle zones in coordination with authorities, both children and adults will start cycling. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why Seniors Are Snapping Up This TV Box, We Explain! Techno Mag Learn More Undo As demand grows, the government will be pushed to build the infrastructure," said Ashish Bajaj, founder of Cycle Network Grow, Kolkata. Speakers also proposed introducing weekly car-free days and encouraging families to cycle together. Participants from Delhi, Noida, and Himachal Pradesh said change must start at home, one habit at a time. Gajender Ramola, founder of Pahadi Pedallers, said the idea was to reconnect people with the simplicity and sustainability of cycling while urging policymakers to act. "We need to learn from countries like the Netherlands and Denmark, where more than 40% of people cycle to work," he said. "With the right policies and strong infrastructure, we can build habits that last. On the other hand, the number of four-wheelers in 10 major Indian cities has gone up by 300%. According to the WHO, cycling for just 30 minutes a day can reduce the risk of heart disease by 50%. If even 10% of urban Indians take up cycling, we could cut the country's carbon emissions by 1.5 crore tonnes a year.
