Steering into the future: Uber's driverless taxis hit London streets by 2026

Malay Mail11-06-2025
LONDON, June 12 — Ride-hailing firm Uber will launch self-driving taxis in London next year when England trials new driverless services, the firm and the UK government said on Tuesday.
Under the Uber pilot scheme, services will initially have a human in the driver's seat who can take control of the vehicle in an emergency, but the trials will eventually transition to being fully driverless.
The government announcement will see companies including Uber allowed to trial commercial driverless services without a human presence for the first time in the UK.
They will include taxis and 'bus-like' services.
Uber CEO Andrew Macdonald described London's roads as 'one of the world's busiest and most complex urban environments'.
'Our vision is to make autonomy a safe and reliable option for riders everywhere, and this trial in London brings that future closer to reality,' he said.
Members of the public will be able to book the transport via an app from spring 2026, ahead of a potential wider rollout when new legislation — the Automated Vehicles Act — becomes law from the second half of 2027, the Department for Transport added.
The technology could create 38,000 jobs, add £42 billion (RM240.2 billion) to the UK economy by 2025, and make roads safer, it said.
'The future of transport is arriving. Self-driving cars could bring jobs, investment, and the opportunity for the UK to be among the world-leaders in new technology,' Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said.
'We can't afford to take a back seat on AI.... That's why we're bringing timelines forward today,' added Technology Secretary Peter Kyle.
The wider rollout will also allow the sale and use of self-driving, private cars.
Driverless vehicle trials have been underway in the UK since January 2015, with British companies Wayve and Oxa 'spearheading significant breakthroughs in the technology', the ministry said.
'These early pilots will help build public trust and unlock new jobs, services, and markets,' said Wayve CEO Alex Kendall.
According to the government the forthcoming legislation will require self-driving vehicles to 'achieve a level of safety at least as high as competent and careful human drivers'.
'By having faster reaction times than humans, and by being trained on large numbers of driving scenarios, including learning from real-world incidents, self-driving vehicles can help reduce deaths and injuries,' it said.
Driverless taxis with limited capacity are already on the roads in the United States and China, most notably in the central Chinese city of Wuhan where a fleet of over 500 can be hailed by app in designated areas. — AFP

IKEA bets on online growth in China with JD.com launch

became the second Chinese ecommerce platform IKEA joined, following its store launch on Alibaba's Tmall in March 2020. (AP pic) LONDON : Swedish budget furniture retailer IKEA opened a digital store on Chinese ecommerce platform on Friday, as it expands its presence on third-party online shopping sites in China to draw in new customers with cut-price products. Western retailers are experimenting with new formats and channels to take a bigger slice of China's highly competitive ecommerce market, as the government expands policies meant to revive consumer spending. IKEA, known for wooden bookshelves and beds, launched a 2,999 yuan (US$417.50) gaming chair and 3,999 yuan gaming desk specially for – much more expensive offerings than its top-selling BILLY bookcase priced at 249 yuan. But IKEA also plans to offer special discounts to mark the opening of the store which will sell 6,500 products, and use logistics network to deliver to homes. is the second Chinese ecommerce platform IKEA has joined, after opening a store on Alibaba's Tmall in March 2020. 'We will continue the great work we are doing (on Tmall), but now we are also adding as another channel to reach and acquire customers,' said Tolga Oncu, retail operations manager at Ingka Group, the biggest IKEA franchiser, which runs IKEA stores in China. One in five new IKEA customers in China came from Tmall in the last financial year and that trend is going up, according to the company. IKEA has also expanded its store network in China, with three new openings since Sept 1 last year, bringing the total number to 40. The launch is part of a 6.3 billion yuan (US$877.03 million) investment Ingka plans in China by 2027. IKEA entered China in 1998 and the country was for several years in its top five markets by revenue, but has shrunk. China's share of Ingka Group's overall sales has been flatlining, at 3.5% of global sales in the 2023-2024 financial year and 3.6% in 12 months before that. Ingka will report results for its 2024-2025 financial year, which ends on Aug 31, in October.

US gold futures hit record high on tariff report

Gold, seen as a safe haven investment, has reached record highs on tariff concerns and geopolitical unrest. (EPA Images pic) LONDON : The price of gold on the US futures market hit a record high today following a report by the Financial Times (FT) that Washington was imposing tariffs on some bullion bars. The FT said gold bars weighing 1kg and 100 ounces have been classified as subject to tariffs by the US customs border protection agency – threatening to upend global trading of the precious metal. In reaction, gold for December delivery reached an all-time high at US$3,534.10 an ounce (31.1 grams) on the Comex, the world's biggest futures market. Gold, seen as a safe haven investment, has already reached record highs this year on tariff concerns and geopolitical unrest. Commerzbank analyst Carsten Fritsch said today that tariffs on bullion 'would have serious implications for the gold market', with key supplier Switzerland already subject to hefty US tariffs. 'One-kilo bars are the most common form traded on Comex and comprise the bulk of Switzerland's bullion exports to the US,' the FT said. Fritsch noted that 'gold bars of this size imported from Switzerland into the US would be subject to a 39% tariff'. The amount, one of the highest tariffs imposed by Washington, entered force yesterday. 'Switzerland is a major supplier of gold bars because it is home to many gold refineries that melt down gold into specific bar sizes,' Fritsch pointed out. Ole Hansen, head of commodity strategy at Saxo bank, added that 'the US futures market is often used by bullion banks globally as a hedging tool for transactions in the physical bullion market'.

Slot eyes silverware as new-look Liverpool kick off season against Palace in Community Shield showdown

LONDON, Aug 9 — Liverpool boss Arne Slot is relishing the rare chance to lift silverware in his side's first game of the season as the new-look Premier League champions face Crystal Palace in tomorrow's Community Shield. Despite storming to a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title last season with four games to spare, the Reds have splashed out, spending nearly £300 million ($402 million) in the transfer market. New forwards Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, plus full-backs Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong could get their first chance to impress the Liverpool fans at Wembley. The traditional curtain-raiser to the English football season sees the winners of the previous season's Premier League and FA Cup face off. 'Normally you have to play numerous games before you can win something,' Slot said at his pre-match press conference. 'Now we have a chance to win something in the beginning of the season. Unfortunately, we face a very good Crystal Palace that have been very difficult to win against for us. 'They showed in the last (FA Cup) final – and even in the semi-final, by the way, as well – how difficult it is to win a one-off game against them.' Palace are appearing in the fixture for the first time after lifting their maiden major trophy by shocking Manchester City 1-0 in May to win the FA Cup. The Eagles' joy has been slightly soured since as they were thrown out of the Europa League and demoted into the Conference League — the third tier of European competition — over a breach of multi-club ownership rules. US businessman John Textor owned a stake in Palace and is the majority owner of French club Lyon, who have also qualified for the Europa League. Despite Textor since selling his shares to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, Uefa deemed Palace failed to meet the deadline to avoid a breach. Under Uefa multi-club ownership rules, Lyon have been allowed to keep their place in the second-tier competition of European football as they finished higher in Ligue 1 (6th) than Palace (12th) in the Premier League last season. Palace, however, have appealed to the Lausanne-based Court of Arbitration for Sport. Guehi, Eze to start By contrast to Liverpool's transfer bonanza, Palace have spent just £2 million (RM11.4 million) on Croatian left-back Borna Sosa and a new reserve goalkeeper in Walter Benitez. But the south London club have so far managed to keep hold of all of their prized assets despite interest from English and European giants. Liverpool themselves are keen on Palace captain Marc Guehi, while Eberechi Eze has been linked with a move to Arsenal. Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed both players will start at Wembley and believes his side can aim much higher up the table this season after a slow start last year cost them a top-half finish. 'We've started on a completely different level, with a different mindset and different standard we set last year, and this is why we can look forward to the season in a very positive way,' said Glasner. Tributes will be paid before the match to Diogo Jota, the Liverpool forward who died in a car crash last month at the age of 28. A 'Forever 20' emblem, referencing Jota's now-retired shirt number, will be printed on Liverpool's shirts this season. 'Tragedy impacted us but it impacted far more his wife, children and parents,' added Slot. 'The tributes that have been done since were all very emotional and impressive.' — AFP
