Slot eyes silverware as new-look Liverpool kick off season against Palace in Community Shield showdown
Despite storming to a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title last season with four games to spare, the Reds have splashed out, spending nearly £300 million ($402 million) in the transfer market.
New forwards Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, plus full-backs Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong could get their first chance to impress the Liverpool fans at Wembley.
The traditional curtain-raiser to the English football season sees the winners of the previous season's Premier League and FA Cup face off.
'Normally you have to play numerous games before you can win something,' Slot said at his pre-match press conference.
'Now we have a chance to win something in the beginning of the season. Unfortunately, we face a very good Crystal Palace that have been very difficult to win against for us.
'They showed in the last (FA Cup) final – and even in the semi-final, by the way, as well – how difficult it is to win a one-off game against them.'
Palace are appearing in the fixture for the first time after lifting their maiden major trophy by shocking Manchester City 1-0 in May to win the FA Cup.
The Eagles' joy has been slightly soured since as they were thrown out of the Europa League and demoted into the Conference League — the third tier of European competition — over a breach of multi-club ownership rules.
US businessman John Textor owned a stake in Palace and is the majority owner of French club Lyon, who have also qualified for the Europa League.
Despite Textor since selling his shares to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, Uefa deemed Palace failed to meet the deadline to avoid a breach.
Under Uefa multi-club ownership rules, Lyon have been allowed to keep their place in the second-tier competition of European football as they finished higher in Ligue 1 (6th) than Palace (12th) in the Premier League last season.
Palace, however, have appealed to the Lausanne-based Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Guehi, Eze to start
By contrast to Liverpool's transfer bonanza, Palace have spent just £2 million (RM11.4 million) on Croatian left-back Borna Sosa and a new reserve goalkeeper in Walter Benitez.
But the south London club have so far managed to keep hold of all of their prized assets despite interest from English and European giants.
Liverpool themselves are keen on Palace captain Marc Guehi, while Eberechi Eze has been linked with a move to Arsenal.
Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed both players will start at Wembley and believes his side can aim much higher up the table this season after a slow start last year cost them a top-half finish.
'We've started on a completely different level, with a different mindset and different standard we set last year, and this is why we can look forward to the season in a very positive way,' said Glasner.
Tributes will be paid before the match to Diogo Jota, the Liverpool forward who died in a car crash last month at the age of 28.
A 'Forever 20' emblem, referencing Jota's now-retired shirt number, will be printed on Liverpool's shirts this season.
'Tragedy impacted us but it impacted far more his wife, children and parents,' added Slot.

"I really like it. I feel like, as my career progresses, I feel like I will end up more central anyway, so it's come a bit earlier than I'd imagined, but I'm really enjoying it, it's just going to take some getting used to." Howe sounded like he would be prepared to give Gordon more chances in the role as the club seek a resolution to Isak's situation. "I thought he (Gordon) looked a real threat. South African Corbin Bosch (3-26) claimed two wickets in the penultimate over and kept Maxwell away from the strike. Needing 10 off the last over from Lungi Ngidi, Maxwell took six from the first four balls before reverse sweeping the bowler for a four to seal Australia's dramatic victory. "It was a little bit nerve-wracking," Maxwell said after being adjudged player of the match. Newcastle held by 10-man Villa after Konsa sees red
BIRMINGHAM, United Kingdom: Newcastle got a worrying glimpse of life without Alexander Isak as they were held to a 0-0 draw in their Premier League opener at Aston Villa despite Ezri Konsa's dismissal. Villa defender Konsa was sent off for a professional foul on Anthony Gordon midway through the second half on Saturday. But Newcastle were unable to take advantage in a toothless display that showed why they are so desperate to keep hold of Isak. The Sweden striker was not involved against Villa after reportedly telling the club he wants to leave St James' Park to join Premier League champions Liverpool. Isak, 25, was the subject of a rejected £110 million (US$149 million) bid from Liverpool earlier in August. Isak, who helped Newcastle secure Champions League qualification and end their 56-year trophy drought last season, is reportedly refusing to train or play in an effort to force his way out of the club he joined from Real Sociedad in 2022. He did not take part in Newcastle's pre-season tour, training alone at his former club Sociedad instead. Isak has three years remaining on his Newcastle contract and it is understood he will be fined for missing a competitive match this weekend. Gordon led the line in Isak's absence as the England winger started out of position in the centre of Newcastle's three-man attack. Anthony Elanga made his Newcastle debut after the winger's £55 million (US$74 million) move from Nottingham Forest, while Malick Thiaw, a defender signed from AC Milan, was among the substitutes. Without Isak to power their attack, Newcastle were unable to make their territorial dominance count as Howe was left hoping for a swift resolution to the transfer saga, which could run until the window closes in September. Villa boss Unai Emery could take heart from his team's backs to the wall effort after Konsa's exit. Emery had admitted it was a "challenging" transfer window after his club were constrained by Premier League profit and sustainability rules, leaving them with just two new signings. Marco Bizot, recruited from Brest, made his debut in goal in the absence of the suspended Emiliano Martinez, while Evann Guessand, a striker signed from Rennes, was on the bench. Elanga wasted a golden opportunity for a debut goal after sprinting through on goal for a shot that was repelled by Bizot. Gordon was equally profligate when he headed Harvey Barnes' cross over the bar from just six yards.
